Pickering and Ajax to Pearson airport: the long way west

Pearson is the big one. From central Pickering it is roughly 55 to 60 km to the airport, and from Ajax about 64 km. Free-flowing, that is 50 to 55 minutes. On a weekday morning heading west, or on a Friday afternoon heading anywhere, expect 75 to 100 minutes, because Highway 401 through Scarborough and North York is the slowest stretch of the whole journey.

Pickering Casino Resort and Casino Ajax

Durham Region has two casinos within about 7 km of each other. Pickering Casino Resort is a casino and hotel complex in east Pickering, close to Highway 401. Casino Ajax is at 50 Alexander's Crossing in Ajax, and its own website says it is open 24 hours, lists around 500 slot machines and offers free on-site parking.

Casino Ajax says it asks for valid, original government-issued photo identification at entry plus a second piece of photo ID. Bring identification for everyone in the party, and check each casino's own guidance on age limits and entry rules before you go, because those rules belong to the venue rather than to us. Pickering's lakeshore is the reason many people book a Pickering limo for a wedding or a family occasion. The City of Pickering describes Frenchman's Bay as one of the large coastal wetlands on the north shore of Lake Ontario, and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority labels it an Environmentally Significant Area. Two practical points from the City's waterfront page: there is no lifeguard supervision at Pickering's beaches, bays, rivers or creeks, and a paid parking program runs on the waterfront from 1 May to 1 October. The City also runs a free weekend transit route to the waterfront, Route 100. For a wedding party, the parking program is a good reason to be dropped at the water rather than hunting for a space with a gown and a camera bag.

The shoreline is about 37 to 65 minutes from Union Station in the car. If your photographer wants more than one backdrop, add a second stop to the booking so the route is timed in advance.

Ajax: Harwood Avenue, the lakefront and getting around town

Ajax calls itself the town "by the lake" and its Town Hall is at 65 Harwood Avenue South. Harwood is the spine of the town, and most local pickups start from a house or condo within a few minutes of it. The Town lists its beaches, waterfronts and conservation areas in a dedicated section of its website.

Healthcare is part of the local geography as well. Lakeridge Health runs a hospital for Ajax and Pickering, one of five Lakeridge hospitals in Durham Region. Oshawa Executive Airport: private flights from the east end

Oshawa Executive Airport sits on the eastern edge of the GTA, and it is a different kind of airfield from Pearson. According to the City of Oshawa, which owns it, the airport at 1200 Airport Boulevard is a general aviation and corporate airport, with a full-service fixed base operator open 24 hours a day, a control tower that operates from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., and tenants offering charter, air ambulance and flight training. It has no scheduled passenger service and the City says there are no plans for it.

For a private charter passenger or a business aviation arrival, a chauffeur waiting at the FBO is the practical way to connect with the road network. Highway 401, Highway 407 East and why timing matters

The 401 is the corridor everyone uses, and it is also where most delays begin. Highway 407 East is the other option: according to the Province of Ontario, the mainline runs from Brock Road to Highway 35/115, about 50 km, with a freeway link to the 401 in Whitby. It is a useful alternative for trips further east, such as Oshawa, Bowmanville or Peterborough, when the 401 is slow.

For a morning westbound airport run, the time of the pickup matters more than the road; a car leaving Pickering at 5 a.m. can be at Pearson in about an hour, while the same car at 7:30 a.m. may take well over 90 minutes. GO trains, the proposed BRT and when transit beats a car

Pickering and Ajax sit on the Lakeshore East GO corridor, which Metrolinx describes as the second busiest GO rail line and is expanding with more frequent, two-way service. Commuters to Union Station are well served, and for a single traveller going downtown on a weekday, the train is the lowest-cost, most predictable option, and we say so.

The picture changes for airports and luggage. Getting from a Durham GO station to Pearson means a transfer at Union to UP Express, which makes the trip in 28 minutes from Union according to the UP Express website, and then the walk or taxi to your platform at each end. With bags and children it is a long way.

Metrolinx also describes a proposed Durham-Scarborough bus rapid transit line of about 36 km along Highway 2, linking Pickering and Ajax to Whitby, Oshawa and Scarborough. It is described as proposed, with no opening date on the Metrolinx project page, so do not plan a trip around it.
