How far is Boston from Montréal by car?

Boston is about 495 km from downtown Montréal, usually five and a half to six and a half hours of driving before the border and stops. The road is Autoroute 10 and 35 to the Highgate Springs crossing, then I-89 and I-93 south. Border queues are a separate variable.

Unlike the run to New York, the Boston trip does not use the Lacolle crossing at all. It leaves Montréal on Autoroute 10, picks up Autoroute 35 toward the Vermont line, crosses at Saint-Armand and Highgate Springs, and then follows Interstate 89 across the Green Mountains and into New Hampshire. At Concord, I-89 meets I-93, and I-93 runs south into the city. A routing engine puts the whole thing at about 495 km, and that is the figure used throughout this page as a planning number, not a promise.

People search for this trip as a Montréal to Boston car service, a Montréal to Boston limo or a private driver from Montréal to Boston. Each means the same thing here: a licensed, commercially insured chauffeur in a Canadian-based vehicle, one fixed fare quoted before you book, and no airport queues at either end. Open the booker with your Montréal address and your Boston address and the exact all-in fare appears before you confirm.

Montréal to Boston car service: the vehicles and the day

Boston is a long day, so the vehicle matters more than it does on a 30-minute transfer.

  • Executive Sedan. Up to 3 passengers with 2 large and 2 carry-on bags. A good fit for one or two people heading to a meeting or an appointment.
  • Luxury SUV. Up to 6 passengers with 5–6 large bags. This is the usual choice for a family, or for a student with a full set of luggage.
  • Executive Sprinter. 12 to 14 passengers and 12+ bags, for team trips, conferences and groups travelling together.

Stretch limousines and mini-coaches are hourly products and their availability and the exact vehicle are confirmed at booking. Child, toddler and booster seats are available when requested at booking.

What this service is not should also be said plainly. It is an international trip, Montréal to Boston and back. We do not run local point-to-point rides inside the United States. If your schedule in Boston has several stops, such as a morning in Cambridge and an evening in the Seaport, the desk arranges a US network car for those legs. Our general overview lives on the USA trips hub and the cross-border limo service page.

The route: Autoroute 10, Highgate Springs, I-89 and I-93

The route divides into four pieces, with distances from downtown Montréal that are approximate.

New Hampshire and MassachusettsI-89 to Concord, then I-93 southabout 495 km at BostonFaster, busier, suburban Boston traffic at the end

The first part is short. From the centre of Montréal to the Highgate Springs border is about an hour and ten minutes in light traffic. After the border, Interstate 89 takes you past Burlington, which is about 150 km from Montréal and makes a natural stopping point, then Waterbury, Montpelier and White River Junction, the towns that anchor the Vermont stretch. At White River Junction the highway crosses into New Hampshire and continues to Concord, where I-93 takes over for the last stretch.

If you want to break the drive in Vermont, our page on Montréal to Burlington covers what is worth seeing on the Lake Champlain side. A lunch break in Burlington or Montpelier adds roughly an hour and makes the Boston arrival feel less like the end of a marathon.

Crossing at Saint-Armand and Highgate Springs

The Canadian side is listed by the Canada Border Services Agency as St-Armand/Philipsburg, and the US side is Highgate Springs, Vermont, on Interstate 89 at the border. US Customs and Border Protection's Highgate Springs port page gives the address as Interstate 89 at the border. The office hours on that page are ambiguous, so do not rely on them: confirm the crossing's hours on the Highgate Springs wait-time page on the day you travel, particularly late at night or on a holiday.

For the Canadian side, the CBSA border wait times page lists St-Armand/Philipsburg alongside the other main crossings, with a no-delay or delay reading and a timestamp. These readings are estimates, so do not plan a connection that depends on them to the minute. Border wait is part of the trip; the chauffeur picks whichever lane is moving and keeps you informed.

Why this crossing rather than Lacolle? Because it sits on the direct line to Vermont and New Hampshire, and the routing engine chooses it for Boston. Lacolle is the better crossing for the New York run.

Documents for the Montréal to Boston border crossing

Every passenger needs to prove identity and citizenship, children included. Here is the short version, with the sources.

Canadian citizens. Vermont's official tourism site publishes travel tips for Canadian visitors say a valid Canadian passport or a NEXUS card is required, that children under 16 need proof of Canadian citizenship such as a birth certificate, and that you should carry the vehicle's registration. CBP's Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative page also accepts an enhanced driver's licence or a FAST or SENTRI card for Canadian citizens aged 16 and over. A passport is the safest, because it works on a plane if you have to change plans.

NEXUS. The CBSA says everyone needs their own card to benefit. Every occupant of the car must be a member to use the dedicated lane.

Stays of more than 30 days. This matters for students and relocating professionals. The Government of Canada's advice for the United States says visits longer than 30 days require registration with the US government, and stays beyond six months require an extension. If you are heading to Boston for a long academic or work stay, check the current rules with the US authorities before you leave.

Cash. The CBSA's border reminder checklist notes that bringing cash of CAN$10,000 or more into Canada is not illegal, but it must be declared on arrival and departure.

Food and plants. The Vermont tourism tips say fruits and vegetables from outside the United States are among the prohibited items, and the CBSA says to declare food, plants and animals. A packed lunch is fine; a bag of fruit from a Montréal market is a poor idea.

Visitors who are not Canadian. If you are in Montréal on a visit and want to see Boston, your documents depend on your passport. CBP's I-94 page says Visa Waiver Program travellers now need an approved ESTA before reaching the land border. Check as well that you can re-enter Canada after the trip.

Winter on I-89 and the Green Mountains

Vermont's section of I-89 is the part of the trip where weather matters. Montréal and Vermont share a long winter, and a storm that closes lanes in the Green Mountains can add hours. Plan a buffer rather than a hero's schedule: a flexible arrival time, a vehicle with room for gear, and a stop in Burlington or Montpelier if conditions deteriorate.

A note on Québec's winter-tire rule, because travellers ask. The Government of Québec requires winter tires from December 1 to March 15 on vehicles registered in Québec, and says the requirement does not apply to vehicles registered outside Québec, as set out on its winter tire page. Whether or not the rule applies, the conditions on the road are the same, and a winter day is a good day to leave earlier.

Arriving in Boston: Back Bay, the Seaport, Cambridge and Logan

Boston is compact, and the drop-off matters more than the highway. Passengers typically ask for a Back Bay hotel, an address near the Seaport waterfront, a campus in Cambridge, or Logan Airport. The city's official visitor site, Meet Boston, lists the Freedom Trail, Fenway Park, TD Garden for Bruins and Celtics games, Harvard Square and the Seaport among the places to go, and it is a good place to check events before you arrive.

Give the booker the exact address. The chauffeur confirms the door on the day, because Boston's one-way streets and event closures change the best approach from hour to hour.

Logan Airport has rules worth knowing. Massport's pickup and drop-off page says curbside drop-off is free at all terminals and that vehicles may stop briefly to unload but may not park or wait; international flights use Terminal E, Delta uses Terminal A and JetBlue uses Terminal C, and you should confirm with your airline because assignments change. Massport regulates commercial ground transportation operators separately from drop-offs. That is one reason a pickup at Logan for a return to Montréal is confirmed with the desk in advance rather than improvised.

Why many Montréal travellers choose the car over a flight

The flight from Montréal to Boston is short on a schedule, roughly an hour and a half in the air according to published timetables, but that is not the whole trip. Add the drive to Trudeau, arrival time, a connection at the other end and a ride into town, and the gap with the car narrows, especially for groups.

Self-drive rentalSame road time as the carRental rate plus tolls, fuel and parkingConfident US drivers; check one-way and cross-border terms

If you are flying alone to a hard deadline, fly. If you are a family of four with a week's luggage, or a group of colleagues who can use the road time to work, the car is the better trip. An honest comparison matters here because the flight is genuinely better for some people. The Montréal-Trudeau airport page explains our airport pickups for the front half of a fly-and-drive plan, and Montréal Central Station does the same for rail arrivals.

Choosing a departure time

A seven o'clock departure is the most reliable: the border is quieter, Vermont is dry, and Boston is reached before the late-afternoon rush on I-93. A midday start puts the end of the trip in rush-hour traffic, where the last 30 km can feel longer than the first 300. For a morning meeting in Boston, travel the day before.

Practical advice:

  1. Check that every passenger's document is valid for the whole trip, not just the outbound day.
  2. Keep passports in hand, not in a checked bag in the boot.
  3. Put the Vermont tourism tips and CBP wait-time pages on your phone.
  4. Plan a stop in Burlington, Montpelier or White River Junction if the party includes children.

Game nights, conventions and campus days

Boston draws Montréal visitors for specific reasons. A hockey or basketball night at TD Garden is one; a conference or a campus visit is another. For a one-night trip, ask the desk about a late return the next morning rather than a same-night drive home. For the Montréal side of a sports weekend, the blog's note on Bell Centre game nights explains the city's own arrival pattern, and the concert and sports service page covers event pickups on our home turf.

For conventions and delegations travelling between Montréal and Boston, the event transportation page and the corporate car service page explain how groups are organized. The Palais des congrès note is useful for delegates leaving a Montréal convention for Boston.

Booking Montréal to Boston

Enter the Montréal pickup and the Boston address in the booker, choose the vehicle class and date, and the exact fare shows before you pay. Dispatch is available 24/7 through our Toronto desk, and Montréal service is available in English and French; the Montréal limo page and service de limousine à Montréal explain how pickups work in the city.

Cancelling more than 72 hours before the booked pickup is free; after that the fee is 10% inside 72 hours, 50% inside 48 hours and 100% inside 24 hours or for a no-show.

If Boston is only one option, the corridor offers others: Montréal to New York City is about 590 km on the Lacolle route, and Toronto to Boston covers the trip from the other side of Ontario.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a car service from Montréal to Boston?

It depends on the vehicle, the addresses and the date. The route is about 495 km and five and a half to six and a half hours of driving, plus the border. Enter both addresses in the booker and the exact all-in fare appears before you confirm.

How long does it take to drive from Montréal to Boston?

Plan on roughly six hours of driving for about 495 km, plus the border and a stop. Winter weather on I-89 and traffic on I-93 near Boston are the usual sources of delay.

Which border crossing is used from Montréal to Boston?

The direct route crosses at Saint-Armand on the Québec side and Highgate Springs, Vermont, on Interstate 89, reached by Autoroutes 10 and 35. The Lacolle crossing is for the New York route instead.

What ID do I need to cross into the United States by car?

Canadian citizens aged 16 and over need a passport or a NEXUS card for the trip according to Vermont's tourism site, and CBP also accepts an enhanced driver's licence. Children under 16 need proof of citizenship. Non-Canadian visitors should check ESTA and Canadian re-entry.

Can my chauffeur drive me around Boston?

No. The service covers the international trip from Montréal to Boston and back, and does not run local point-to-point rides inside the United States. The desk arranges a US network car for local legs.

Is it faster to fly from Montréal to Boston?

On a schedule, yes: roughly an hour and a half in the air against about six hours on the road. With airport time at both ends and a group, the gap narrows. For a solo traveller with a deadline, flying is the better choice.

Can you take me to Logan Airport?

Yes, drop-offs at Logan's departure curb are straightforward, as Massport allows brief unloading at the curb. Pickups at Logan for a return trip are arranged with the desk in advance, because Massport regulates commercial operators there.

Can I use the NEXUS lane?

Only if every person in the car is a NEXUS member. Otherwise the car uses the regular lanes, and everyone still needs valid ID.

What is your cancellation policy?

More than 72 hours' notice carries no charge; 72 hours or less is 10%; 48 hours or less is 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show is 100%, all measured from the scheduled pickup time.
