How far is Toronto to New York City by car?

About 760 km by road, which a routing engine puts at roughly 9 hours 30 minutes of driving before the border wait, fuel stops and traffic. Allow 10.5 to 12 hours door to door in one day, or split the trip. The booker shows the exact fixed fare for your addresses.

A Toronto to New York City car service turns a punishing drive into a working or resting day. You are collected at an address in Toronto, the chauffeur deals with the crossing, the Thruway and the Manhattan approach, and you arrive at the door in Midtown or Lower Manhattan without having parked, refuelled or read a single sign. This page is for the traveller who wants to go by road: a team of colleagues, a family with bags, a client who dislikes airports, or anyone who wants the trip itself to be private.

It is also a long trip, and honesty helps. The routing figure is about 760 km, the Niagara border crossing sits in the middle of the morning, and Manhattan traffic is its own variable. The sections below set out the route options, the time you should budget, the documents, the return rules and the alternatives, including the cases where a flight or train is the better answer.

The route from Toronto to New York City

Distances and times are produced with an open routing engine from downtown Toronto and rounded, so treat them as about.

Two broad corridors cross New York State, and the chauffeur chooses between them on the day from live traffic and weather.

  1. The Thruway corridor. From Buffalo, Interstate 90 runs east through Rochester, Syracuse and Albany, where the Thruway turns south on Interstate 87 toward New York City.
  2. The Southern Tier corridor. Interstates 86 and 81 run through the south of New York State into Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and the car enters Manhattan by one of the Hudson crossings.

The routing engine we checked selected the southern corridor for a Peace Bridge start. The Thruway is the better-known route. Distances on either are close, so the decision is made on conditions rather than on a fixed rule.

For comparison, Toronto to Newark and northern New Jersey is about 745 km, Toronto to Philadelphia about 760 km, Toronto to Washington, DC about 770 km and Toronto to Boston about 885 km.

Toronto to New York City in one day: a realistic timeline

One day is possible and is the usual choice when a meeting is booked. It is long, so build it honestly. This is an example, not a guaranteed schedule:

  1. 5:00 a.m. Pickup in Toronto, passports checked and bags loaded.
  2. 7:00 a.m. QEW to Fort Erie and the Peace Bridge. The chauffeur reads the live wait figures and picks the lane.
  3. 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Border processing. This is the variable that moves everything else.
  4. Late morning. A fuel and comfort stop in central New York State.
  5. Early afternoon. A longer stop for lunch, if the schedule allows.
  6. 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. Arrival in Manhattan. This lands in the evening rush, so tell us if the end time matters.

Realistically, plan for 10.5 to 12 hours of total elapsed time. For a morning meeting in Manhattan, the sensible answer is to travel the day before.

Toronto to New York City in two days

For a family trip, a sightseeing stop or a meeting that needs a rested team, split the journey. A natural stopping point is the Syracuse area, about 394 km from Toronto and under five hours of driving; Albany, at about 617 km, leaves the final day shorter. The overnight stop is your choice and booking, so a hotel, a family visit or a city you wanted to see all work.

Describe the plan to the travel desk and the booker or desk shows the fixed fare for the full itinerary before you confirm. The return can be booked as a second trip on any date.

Documents and the border crossing

The usual crossing for New York City is the Peace Bridge between Fort Erie and Buffalo. The Lewiston-Queenston Bridge is the alternative through the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission, and the chauffeur chooses by live wait times. U.S. Customs and Border Protection publishes US-bound wait times at bwt.cbp.gov. Its feed lists the Peace Bridge as open 24 hours a day, with standard and NEXUS lanes reported separately. The Peace Bridge site also shows live traffic.

The Government of Canada's US travel advice sets the documents:

  • Canadians aged 16 and over need a valid passport or a valid Trusted Traveller card such as NEXUS for land travel.
  • Canadians aged 15 and under can use a passport, an original or copy of a birth certificate, or an original citizenship certificate.
  • Canadians under 19 travelling with a school or organized group need written parental consent.
  • Dual US-Canadian citizens must enter the United States on their US passport.
  • Stays of more than 30 days require registration with the US Government, and Canadians can usually stay up to six months.

Permanent residents of Canada and citizens of other countries travel on the passport of their country of citizenship and must check US entry rules, including any visa, before booking. Any criminal record, however old, can lead to refused entry, and cannabis cannot cross the border even into a state where it is legal. U.S. Customs and Border Protection lists NEXUS among accepted cards on its land and sea entry page. The CBSA NEXUS page says each traveller needs their own card to benefit. For the full rules, see our USA hub.

Arriving in Manhattan

The chauffeur drives to the exact address you give the booker: a hotel, an office tower, a residence or a theatre. Tell us the cross streets and the side of the street, and name anyone meeting you at the door. In Midtown the curb can be busy, so the chauffeur may stage the unloading rather than wait.

Manhattan has a tolling zone. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Congestion Relief Zone covers local streets and avenues in Manhattan south of and including 60th Street, and tolling began in January 2025. The MTA explains that the toll depends on vehicle type, time of day, crossing credits and payment method; see its Congestion Relief Zone page for current rates. The fare in our booker is all-in for the exact addresses, so you do not add up tolls yourself.

For a trip that ends in Brooklyn, Queens or New Jersey, or that includes a local Manhattan day, the final leg may need a US network car. Our cars are Canadian-based and do not run local rides inside the US; the desk arranges the local leg. Read the rule on the USA hub.

Business trips to New York City

Toronto to New York is a classic roadshow route. A team of four with laptops and a pitch deck can use the drive as a preparation day. Use the Luxury SUV for four to six with luggage, or the Executive Sprinter for a delegation of 12 to 14 with 12 or more bags. Corporate accounts can arrange recurring trips through the corporate car service, and hourly work in Manhattan is a US network leg. For downtown Toronto pickups, the usual hotel starting points include Fairmont Royal York and The Ritz-Carlton, Toronto, and many clients start at Union Station.

If you work in the car, talk to the chauffeur before the border, because the officer may want to speak to every passenger. Keep the passports on top of the bag, phones charged and the purpose of the trip ready in one sentence.

Families, groups and children

Child, toddler and booster seats are available when requested at booking, and give the age and weight of each child so the right seat is in the car. The car seat page explains the approach. Plan more stops with children: every hour added to the route is an hour that matters on a nine-hour drive. For holiday periods, see how we handle the rush in the Christmas airport runs guide.

Amtrak's Maple Leaf runs daily between Toronto Union Station and New York Penn Station in 12 hours 30 minutes, with stops that include Niagara Falls, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany-Rensselaer, according to Amtrak. If you travel alone and are not in a hurry, it is a reasonable choice. For a single traveller with a morning meeting, a flight from Pearson or Billy Bishop is usually the better answer, and our cars still handle the airport run at the Toronto end. The car comes into its own for two or more people, heavy luggage, a stop on the way, or a trip that must keep its own schedule.

Coming home with purchases

New York shopping is the other half of many trips, and the Canada Border Services Agency's rules decide what is duty-free. According to the CBSA's guide for residents returning to Canada, an absence of 24 hours or more earns an exemption of up to CAN$200 with no alcohol or tobacco. An absence of 48 hours or more allows up to CAN$800, and alcohol within 1.5 litres of wine, 1.14 litres of spirits or 8.5 litres of beer. Exemptions cannot be combined or transferred. An overnight trip of under 48 hours therefore earns the CAN$200 tier only; the CAN$800 tier needs 48 hours or more away. Declare everything and keep receipts handy.

The CBSA also posts wait times for the 30 busiest crossings, including Fort Erie and Queenston-Lewiston, which helps you time the return.
