The train from Montréal pulls in at the foot of one of the most walkable historic districts in North America, and then you meet the hill. Old Québec is built on a cliff, the streets are narrow and some are one-way, and the hotel you booked may be at the top of a slope with a suitcase between you and it. A Gare du Palais car service solves that part of the trip: you book a chauffeur for your train and are delivered to the door, in English or French.

This page covers the station as VIA Rail describes it, how it relates to Old Québec and Sainte-Foy, the roads out to the airport, the Côte-de-Beaupré and Charlevoix, and the longer drives to Montréal, Ottawa and Toronto. The booker shows a fixed fare for your exact address and vehicle before you pay.

How does a Gare du Palais car service work?

You book a car for your VIA Rail arrival or departure at Gare du Palais, enter the destination, and see a fixed fare before paying. Your chauffeur plans the approach to rue de la Gare-du-Palais, meets you at the agreed point and delivers you to Old Québec, Sainte-Foy, the airport or further out.

In the booker, choose Gare du Palais as the pickup, add the destination and select a vehicle class. Put the train number and scheduled arrival in the booking notes. The fare is calculated for that trip and shown in full, so there is no meter at the end and no surprise when the hill is steeper than expected.

Arrangements for waiting at a train station are confirmed at booking. Airport arrivals carry published free waiting periods because flights are tracked in real time; trains are handled by agreement, which is the reason to include the train number up front.

Where Gare du Palais sits in relation to Old Québec

VIA Rail lists the station at 450 rue de la Gare-du-Palais, Québec, G1K 3X2. Visit Québec City places it near Old Québec, slightly outside the historic district. That description is accurate: the station is at the bottom of the hill, close to the Lower Town, and the walls, the Château Frontenac and the Upper Town are above you.

VIA lists the Intercar coach stop at the Gare du Palais bus terminal, 320 rue Abraham-Martin, and Indigo's outdoor parking at that address, about 150 m from the station. The RTC city bus network serves the area, VIA lists car sharing and Uber, and Hertz is the listed rental company with no counter in the station.

  • Walk to the Lower Town streets: a few minutes

What VIA Rail's page says about hours, bags and accessibility

We read VIA's Québec station page in October 2026. The station is open Monday to Friday 04:00 to 00:01 and Saturday and Sunday 06:00 to 00:01. The ticket counter closes earlier, but VIA states that an agent is always present, even when a late train arrives after the counter closes.

The station has a baggage checkroom, baggage carts, Wi-Fi, a restaurant, a snack bar, an ATM and a business lounge. It is wheelchair accessible at the entrance and platform, with a hearing loop at the ticket counter and a courtesy wheelchair for boarding. VIA also runs a pilot for passengers who need accessible taxis with luggage to the Québec and Sainte-Foy stations; reserve with VIA and mention the luggage. Read the full page at VIA Rail's Québec station listing.

Pickups and drop-offs on rue de la Gare-du-Palais

VIA describes the curbside zone as the sidewalk in front of the main entrance on rue de la Gare-du-Palais, and that is the spot to agree with your chauffeur.

Arriving. Collect your bags, step out of the main entrance, and the chauffeur meets you at the point named in the booking. If the train runs late the delay is tracked through your booking record, so you do not have to call anyone from the platform.

Departing. For a morning train, ask for a pickup that gets you to the station with a margin, particularly if you are coming down from the Upper Town in winter, when the hill roads are slower. Follow the recommended arrival time printed on your ticket.

Accessible assistance. VIA asks for curbside assistance to be requested at least 48 hours in advance through its own line. If you use it, tell us at booking and we will place the car where the assistance will meet you.

Gare du Palais to the Château Frontenac, Petit-Champlain and the hotels

Old Québec is compact, but it is vertical. Approximate road distances from the station:

  • Petit-Champlain and Place Royale (Lower Town): about 1.2 km, 5–10 minutes
  • Fairmont Le Château Frontenac and Dufferin Terrace: about 1.5 km, 5–15 minutes
  • Citadelle and the walled Upper Town hotels: about 2 km, 10–15 minutes
  • Plains of Abraham and Grande Allée: about 2.5 km, 10–15 minutes
  • Saint-Roch (Rue Saint-Joseph Est): about 1 km, 5–10 minutes

Visit Québec City describes Old Québec as a UNESCO World Heritage site designated in 1985, enclosed by 4.6 km of fortifications, with the Château Frontenac and the Citadelle inside the walls and Petit-Champlain and the Old Port below. Fairmont's page for the hotel gives 610 rooms and suites, and a car is the right call when your room is at the top of the hill and your luggage is not light. Read more at Visit Québec City's Old Québec guide and Fairmont Le Château Frontenac.

Local detail changes the answer. The streets directly in front of some hotels are tight or restricted at busy times, and a chauffeur will propose the nearest practical drop-off. Our Québec City limousine page goes further into the city's hotels and venues.

Gare du Palais or Sainte-Foy: which station is yours?

Some VIA trains also serve the Sainte-Foy station on the west side of the city, at 3255 chemin de la Gare. VIA lists its hours as Monday to Saturday 05:15 to 22:30 and Sunday 07:15 to 22:30, with outdoor parking of about 250 spaces. VIA also operates a Québec–Sainte-Foy shuttle on certain trains, which you reserve through its own line, and notes a closure on chemin Saint-Louis near the station that calls for a detour.

Château Frontenac above Old Québec

Check your ticket before booking. A traveller who is heading to a hotel in Old Québec might choose either station, but the one that matches the train is the one on the ticket. Sainte-Foy is closer to the airport and the western suburbs; Gare du Palais is closer to Old Québec.

  • Gare du Palais to Sainte-Foy station: about 10 km, 15–25 minutes
  • Sainte-Foy station to the airport (YQB): about 10 km, 10–20 minutes

See VIA Rail's Sainte-Foy station page for current details and tell us at booking which station applies.

Gare du Palais to Jean-Lesage Airport (YQB)

From Gare du Palais the airport is about 20 km, normally 20–30 minutes, longer at rush hour. The airport's taxi counter is on level 1 between international arrivals and the currency exchange office, and YQB lists limousine service as a separate option. Our Québec City airport limo page covers the pickup procedure and flight tracking.

The booker shows the fixed fare for a train-to-airport run and the reverse. Because the VIA station is on the opposite side of the city from the airport, it is worth allowing a margin on early flights, particularly in winter.

If your hotel is in the Lower Town and you travel light, walking is the better choice and we will say so. A car makes sense when the route involves the hill, a group, a stroller, ice or rain.

Day trips from the station: Côte-de-Beaupré, Île d'Orléans, Mont-Sainte-Anne

A train arrival is also a natural starting point for a day out. Visit Québec City lists the Côte-de-Beaupré, Île d'Orléans, Montmorency Falls Park and the Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré shrine among its attractions.

  • Montmorency Falls: about 12 km, 15–20 minutes
  • Île d'Orléans (bridge to the island): about 15 km, 20–25 minutes
  • Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré: about 35 km, 30–40 minutes
  • Mont-Sainte-Anne: about 55 km, 45–60 minutes
  • Baie-Saint-Paul: about 95 km, 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes
  • La Malbaie (Charlevoix): about 140 km, 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours

For the north-shore resort country see Charlevoix limousine service. If you want a driver for the day with stops of your own choosing, the private city tour with a driver page lays out sample itineraries by the hour.

Arriving from Montréal, Ottawa and Toronto

Visit Québec City gives Montréal as about 250 km and 2.5 to 3.5 hours by car via Autoroute 20 or 40, and about 3.5 hours by VIA Rail. From Ottawa the fastest drive is Highways 50 and 40 at about 4.5 hours, with a train around 6 hours. It notes that there is no direct train from Toronto and recommends the Montréal routing.

That last point is the one many Ontario visitors need to hear. A trip from Toronto to Québec City by rail means a change at Montréal; by road it is about 800 km, roughly 8–9 hours of driving before stops. A private car is a serious option if you would otherwise be juggling two trains and a wait. For anything that long, ask us at booking about the plan: start time, stops, and whether the trip should be split with an overnight.

Route pages worth reading: Toronto to Québec City car service and Montréal to Québec City car service, with the midway city covered at Trois-Rivières limousine service.

Winter, the Carnaval and early trains

Visit Québec City highlights winter activities from December to March and promotes the Carnaval de Québec and Mont-Sainte-Anne for skiing. Snow, ice and freezing rain affect the hill roads in particular, and a chauffeur will build in extra time for the climb from the station to the Upper Town on days like that.

Child, toddler and booster seats are provided when requested at booking, which is a considerable help when a family arrives by train with ski gear. Our dispatch is staffed around the clock, so a 04:45 departure is booked the same way as a lunchtime one. Check Visit Québec City's winter guide for the event calendar before you plan around a specific weekend.

Vehicle choice for a train arrival

  • Executive Sprinter: 12–14 passengers and 12 or more bags. Wedding parties, tour groups, delegations.
