How far is it from Montréal to New York City by car?
Montréal to New York City is about 590 km (roughly 370 miles) by road, usually six to seven hours of driving before the border and any stops. The route is Autoroute 15 to Lacolle, then I-87 south through Albany. Border wait is a separate variable.
The trip has a simple shape: one border crossing early, then a long run down a single numbered highway. Autoroute 15 leaves Montréal, meets the United States at Lacolle and Champlain, and becomes I-87. From there it is the Adirondack Northway to Albany and the New York State Thruway to the Hudson. The figures on this page are "about" numbers from a routing engine, planning figures rather than promises; a clear Tuesday morning and a wet Friday afternoon are different drives.
This page is for anyone searching for a Montréal to New York City car service, a Montréal to Manhattan limo or a private driver for the run. It explains the day, the documents every passenger needs, what a Canadian-based car can and cannot do once it is in the United States, and when the train or a flight is the better call. When you are ready, get an instant fare in the booker and the exact all-in price for your Montréal address and your Manhattan address appears before you confirm.
Montréal to New York City car service: what the booking covers
A chauffeured Montréal to New York City transfer is a door-to-door trip with a licensed, commercially insured chauffeur in a Canadian-based vehicle. The fare is fixed and quoted before you book. You choose the vehicle for the people and bags in the party:

- Executive Sedan: up to 3 passengers, 2 large and 2 carry-on bags. Right for one or two business travellers.
- Luxury SUV: up to 6 passengers and 5–6 large bags, for a family heading to Manhattan for a week or a student moving in with real luggage.
- Executive Sprinter: 12 to 14 passengers and 12+ bags, for delegations, tour groups and team trips.
Stretch limousines and mini-coaches are hourly products, and their availability and the exact vehicle are confirmed at booking. Child, toddler and booster seats are provided when requested at booking, which matters on a seven-hour day.
In plain words, this is an international trip. We take you from Montréal to your New York address and, if you want, bring you back. We do not run local point-to-point rides inside the United States. If the Manhattan itinerary includes hops between hotels, restaurants and offices, the desk arranges a US network car for those local legs. The wider picture is on the USA trips hub and the cross-border limo service page.
The route, leg by leg
Distances below are approximate and measured from downtown Montréal, so read them as proportions.
| Leg | Road | Approx. distance | What you will notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Montréal to the border | Autoroute 15 south | about 75 km | Suburban traffic, then the farmland of the Montérégie |
| Border crossing | Highway 15 to I-87 at Lacolle / Champlain | about 75 km mark | The one stop where waiting is not in your control |
| Champlain to Albany | I-87, the Adirondack Northway | about 350 km mark | Adirondack mountains, the Lake George area |
| Albany to the lower Hudson | New York State Thruway, I-87 | about 590 km total | Hudson Valley, cashless tolls |
| Into Manhattan | Hudson crossing, then city streets | end of trip | Where the clock stretches most |
Montréal to the Lacolle crossing is a little over an hour in light traffic. The Northway is the memorable stretch: the New York State Department of Transportation describes I-87 as starting in Montréal as Autoroute 15 and continuing as the Adirondack Northway from the border to Albany, and the state's official tourism site, I LOVE NY, lists the Adirondacks, Lake George and the Hudson Valley among its vacation regions. South of Albany, the New York State Thruway is cashless: it bills by E-ZPass or by mail to the registered owner, so nobody counts change at a booth. The all-in fare in the booker is what you pay.
Crossing the border at Lacolle and Champlain
Nearly every Montréal to New York car trip crosses where Highway 15 meets I-87. The Canada Border Services Agency lists the Canadian side as St-Bernard-de-Lacolle on Highway 15; the US side is Champlain, New York. US Customs and Border Protection lists Champlain I-87/A15 as open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for passenger processing on its Champlain port page. The office that answers phones keeps weekday hours, which is separate from the crossing.

Both agencies publish live estimates, worth opening on the morning you travel: the CBSA border wait times page and CBP's border wait times site, which has a Champlain detail page. Treat the estimates as snapshots, not guarantees. Border wait is part of the trip, and the chauffeur will use whichever lane is moving. Build slack into the itinerary so a longer queue does not cost you a dinner reservation or a curtain time.
Documents every passenger needs to enter the United States
Every person in the car must prove identity and citizenship at the US border, children included. Check this before you book, because it cannot be fixed on the day.
Canadian citizens aged 16 and over. CBP lists a valid passport, an enhanced driver's licence or a Trusted Traveler card (NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST) for land entry on its Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative page. The Government of Canada's advice at travel.gc.ca names a passport or a Trusted Traveller card, valid for the whole stay. A passport works in every situation, including a flight home if plans change.
Canadian children. Under 16 at a land crossing, CBP says a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship is enough. Canadians under 19 travelling with a school or organized group need written consent from a parent or guardian, per travel.gc.ca, and the CBSA advises a signed consent letter for any child travelling without a parent.
NEXUS. The benefit is personal. The CBSA says everyone needs their own card, and the dedicated lane works only when every occupant of the vehicle is a member.
Visitors who are not Canadian citizens. Someone visiting Montréal who wants a few days in New York crosses as a foreign national. CBP states on its I-94 page that Visa Waiver Program travellers now need an approved ESTA before reaching the land border. Also confirm that you can re-enter Canada afterwards; that depends on the visa or authorization you hold here.
Anything that complicates entry. The Government of Canada warns that any criminal record, however old, may lead to refusal; that Canadian pardons are not recognized under US law; and that officers have wide discretion, including over electronic devices. Cannabis is illegal under US federal law even where a state permits it. Raise these questions before the booking, not at the booth.
Coming back to Canada: the return leg
On a return trip, the CBSA advises carrying a passport as the most reliable identification. The CBSA's I Declare guide sets out the personal exemptions for returning residents. As of 2026 it lists CAN$200 after more than 24 hours abroad (no alcohol or tobacco), CAN$800 after more than 48 hours and CAN$800 after more than seven days, and the tiers cannot be combined. A weekend in Manhattan therefore falls in the 48-hour tier only if you stay more than 48 hours. Declare purchases and gifts; GST or HST applies beyond the exemption.
Choosing your departure time
The drive rewards a morning start. Leaving around seven puts the border in the mid-morning, Albany around lunchtime, and Manhattan in the late afternoon. Leaving after noon means arriving late in the evening, fine for a hotel check-in but not for a morning meeting.
Some advice from the dispatch side:
- Do not book a morning meeting at the end of the drive. For a ten o'clock Midtown meeting, travel the day before.
- Expect heavier traffic on Friday afternoons. The approaches to the Hudson crossings are slowest late in the day, and the last 30 km can take longer than the first 100.
- Plan a break. A 15-minute stop is built into any seven-hour day; a lunch stop with a walk adds about an hour.
- Weather. Winter storms in the Adirondacks can add hours, so keep the day after a storm light.
Pickup in Montréal: hotel, home, Gare Centrale or the airport
You can start anywhere: downtown and Old Montréal hotels, a Plateau or Westmount home, Montréal Central Station or Montréal-Trudeau (YUL). The Montréal limo page and its French twin, service de limousine à Montréal, explain how city pickups work, and the Québec hub lists the surrounding regions.

Airport pickups include flight tracking, and international arrivals get 60 minutes of free waiting after landing. A name-board meet-and-greet inside arrivals is an optional add-on, described on the meet-and-greet page. After an overseas flight, it is often sensible to sleep in Montréal and drive the next morning. Private-jet passengers can read the Montréal-Trudeau FBO page.
Arriving in New York: Midtown, Penn Station, Brooklyn and beyond
Most passengers ask for a Midtown hotel, a theatre-district address, a Wall Street office or a Brooklyn address. The official visitor site NYC Tourism + Conventions is useful for neighbourhoods from Times Square to Brooklyn. Give the booker the exact address; the chauffeur confirms the door, the cross street and the lane to use on the day.
Two New York specifics. Manhattan at or below 60th Street is inside the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's congestion relief zone, where vehicles entering are charged a toll that depends on vehicle type, time of day and payment method; the schedule is on the MTA's page. A Midtown drop-off is inside it. And the city licenses taxis and for-hire vehicles through its Taxi and Limousine Commission, which is a good reason for local legs to go to a locally licensed car.
So we bring you to the door in Manhattan, and after that, if you want a car to a restaurant and then to Newark or JFK, ask the desk to arrange a US network car. For New Jersey itineraries see Toronto to New Jersey and Newark.
Montréal to New York City: car, train, flight or rental
For some travellers the train is better, and for others a flight is. Compare the real options.

| Option | Typical time | Cost note | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chauffeured car (this service) | About 6–7 hours driving plus border and stops | Fixed fare via booker | Groups, families, heavy luggage, door-to-door days |
| Amtrak Adirondack | About 10 hours per Amtrak | Set by Amtrak; usually the lowest for one traveller | Solo travellers who like the scenery and have a full day |
| Flight | About 1.5 to 2 hours scheduled, plus airport time at both ends | Set by the airline; varies widely | Anyone with a hard deadline |
| Self-drive rental | Same road time as the car | Rental rate plus tolls and parking | Confident US drivers; check one-way and cross-border terms |
Amtrak's Adirondack connects Montréal Central Station and Saint-Lambert with New York's Moynihan Train Hall in about ten hours, passing Plattsburgh, Saratoga Springs, Albany-Rensselaer and the Hudson Valley stations; see Amtrak's Adirondack page. It suits a single traveller with a book. It is a poor fit for a family with a stroller and four suitcases, because the border inspection and the length of the day still apply. A flight is fastest on paper, but with airport time at both ends it is rarely three hours shorter than the car for a group.
The car wins when the party is three or more, when baggage is heavy, when neither end is an airport, or when you want the day to be restful. The train wins on cost for one person. The flight wins for a hard deadline.
Overnight and two-day plans
- Lake George or Saratoga Springs stop. A walk at Lake George or lunch in Saratoga Springs breaks the Northway and adds about 90 minutes.
- Hudson Valley night. Sleep in Albany, Hudson or Poughkeepsie and reach Manhattan the next morning, ahead of Friday and Sunday traffic.
- Return in two days. Book the outbound in the morning and the return later in the week.
Tell the booker you want a multi-day plan and the desk confirms what it can do for your dates and vehicle. For the Montréal end, the hourly chauffeur service and corporate car service cover city days, and the blog has notes on Old Montréal by car and New Year's Eve in the Old Port.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a car service from Montréal to New York City?
It depends on the vehicle, the exact addresses and the date. The route is about 590 km and six to seven hours of driving plus the border. Enter both addresses in the booker and the exact all-in fare shows before you confirm.
How long does it take to drive from Montréal to New York City?
Plan on six to seven hours of driving for roughly 590 km, plus the border and a stop. A morning start leaves the most margin against border queues and Friday traffic near Manhattan.
What documents do I need to cross into the United States from Montréal?
Canadian citizens aged 16 and over need a passport, an enhanced driver's licence or a Trusted Traveler card for land entry according to CBP; a passport is safest. Children need proof of citizenship. Non-Canadian visitors should check ESTA and their right to re-enter Canada.
Can my Montréal chauffeur drive me around New York once we arrive?
No. The service covers the international trip, Montréal to New York and back, and does not run local point-to-point rides inside the United States. The desk arranges a US network car for local legs such as hotel to theatre or an airport run.
Is the train from Montréal to New York better than a car?
The Amtrak Adirondack takes about ten hours and suits a solo traveller who values scenery and a low fare. A car suits groups, families and heavy luggage. Neither avoids the border inspection.
Is the Lacolle border crossing open 24 hours?
CBP lists the Champlain I-87/A15 crossing as open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for passenger processing. The Canadian side's hours are in the CBSA directory. Check both live wait-time pages on the day you travel.
Can I use the NEXUS lane in a car service?
Only if every occupant of the vehicle holds a NEXUS card. If only some passengers do, the car uses the regular lanes, and everyone still needs valid ID.
Can you pick me up at Trudeau airport and drive straight to New York?
Yes. Airport pickups include flight tracking, and international arrivals get 60 minutes of free waiting after landing. A name-board meet-and-greet is an optional add-on.
What is your cancellation policy?
More than 72 hours' notice carries no charge; 72 hours or less is 10%; 48 hours or less is 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show is 100%, all measured from the scheduled pickup time.
