Gare Centrale is not a station you can stand outside and flag a car from with any calm. It sits underneath a hotel tower, the platforms are below street level, there are no baggage carts, and the taxi queue behaves differently at 6 pm on a weekday than at 11 am on a Sunday. A Montreal Central Station car service removes that guesswork: you book a named vehicle for your train, and the chauffeur is already planning around the building before you step off.
This page explains how we handle Gare Centrale pickups and drop-offs, what the station itself offers (we checked VIA Rail's station page), how far it is from the places people actually go, and when the metro, the 747 bus or a taxi is the better choice. The booker shows the exact all-in fare for your address and vehicle before you confirm.
How does a Montreal Central Station car service work?
You book a car through our Toronto dispatch for the day and time of your VIA Rail arrival or departure, name the destination, and receive a fixed fare before you pay. The chauffeur is assigned to your train, plans the approach to Gare Centrale, and takes you and your bags to the address, in English or French.
The sequence is simple. Open the booker, enter the pickup as Montréal Central Station (Gare Centrale), add your destination and choose a vehicle class. Put the train number and scheduled arrival in the booking notes. The booker returns the fare for that exact trip; there is no meter and no surge, and the figure you accept is the figure you pay.
Train pickups are not flights, so the free waiting rules we publish for airport arrivals are not copied across. The waiting arrangement for a station pickup is confirmed at booking, which is why the train number matters: a late train is a conversation to have in advance, not at the kerb.
Where Gare Centrale is and why that matters for pickups
VIA Rail lists the station at 895 de la Gauchetière West, Montréal, H3B 4G1, directly under the Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth hotel. The hotel's own page confirms the arrangement: it describes itself as directly above the station with direct access, and gives its address as 900 René-Lévesque Boulevard West. The Bonaventure and McGill metro stations are the closest stops, according to VIA.

For a car, that means two street faces matter. The main entrance with its accessible drop-off zone is on the de la Gauchetière side, and the hotel's frontage is on René-Lévesque above you. Chauffeurs who work this area know which side of the block a vehicle can stop on at a given hour and which turns are blocked by construction. That knowledge is the main thing you are paying a fixed fare for.
- Street address of the station: 895 de la Gauchetière West
- Hotel above the station: 900 René-Lévesque Boulevard West
- Nearest metro: Bonaventure and McGill (STM)
- Downtown core: you are in it; most downtown hotels are under 2 km away
What VIA Rail's station page says about hours, bags and accessibility
We read VIA's page for this station in October 2026 so you do not have to hunt for it. The station itself is open Monday to Saturday 05:30–23:00 and Sunday 07:30–23:00. The ticket counter keeps shorter hours. A baggage checkroom operates (Monday to Thursday 06:00–19:00, Friday to Sunday 07:30–19:00), and VIA states plainly that there are no baggage carts in the station.
That last line is the practical one. If you are arriving with two large cases, a stroller and a coat, you will be carrying everything from the platform to the street. A chauffeur meeting you at the agreed door can take the heavy items to the car; you are not left queueing with a case in each hand.
For accessibility, VIA lists a wheelchair-accessible entrance and platform, a hearing loop at the ticket counter, and an accessible curbside drop-off to the left of the main entrance. VIA asks for curbside assistance to be requested at least 48 hours ahead through its own line. If you need that help, make the VIA request and tell us at booking so the vehicle is placed to match. Read the full details on VIA Rail's Montréal station page.
Pickup and drop-off at Gare Centrale
The two directions are different jobs.

Arriving by train, leaving by car. After you collect your bags, the chauffeur meets you at the door agreed at booking. If your plans change (a later train, a connection from Ottawa that ran behind) tell dispatch through the booking confirmation rather than waiting to see what happens. We would rather re-time a pickup than have you wait.
Leaving by car, catching a train. Plan the drop-off so you are inside well before the doors close on your train. VIA operates its own boarding procedures and they can vary by service, so check your ticket for the recommended arrival time. A drop-off at the accessible zone, to the left of the main entrance, is the place VIA reserves for passengers who need assistance.
Dispatch is staffed around the clock, so a 05:15 departure and a 22:50 arrival are booked the same way as a midday trip.
Gare Centrale to Montréal-Trudeau Airport (YUL)
Montréal-Trudeau is about 20 km from downtown, which is the figure Tourisme Montréal uses on its visitor pages. From Gare Centrale the drive is usually 25–45 minutes, longer on weekday evenings and during the construction season. Allow extra time before an international flight.
Our dedicated page for the airport, Montréal-Trudeau airport limo (YUL), covers the terminal drop-offs and what happens on arrival. If the trip is the whole point of your booking, say so in the notes: a chauffeur told you are connecting from a VIA arrival to a flight will start from the right assumptions about timing.
The public alternative is the STM's 747 bus, which serves the airport and the downtown core and runs frequently, with departures generally every 10 to 20 minutes according to STM. Tourisme Montréal puts the journey at about 45 to 70 minutes depending on traffic. The downtown end of the line moved in January 2026 because of work near Berri, so check STM's 747 page for the current stop before you plan to walk to it with luggage.
The REM light rail is expected to link the airport to Gare Centrale, but the airport branch is not carrying passengers yet. REM's own site shows 23 stations open to Brossard, Deux-Montagnes and Anse-à-l'Orme, with dynamic testing under way on the airport branch as of August 2026. Treat the REM-to-airport trip as a future option; for now it is the bus, a taxi or a booked car.
Gare Centrale to downtown hotels, Old Montréal and the venues
Most of what visitors want is close. Approximate road distances from the station:

- Bell Centre: under 1 km, about 5 minutes by car (a short walk if you are travelling light)
- Palais des congrès: about 1.2 km, 5–10 minutes
- Old Montréal, near the Notre-Dame Basilica and Place Jacques-Cartier: about 2 km, 10–15 minutes
- Old Port: about 2.5 km, 10–15 minutes
- Plateau and Mile End: about 5–6 km, 15–25 minutes
The honest point is that for many of these trips a booked car is a convenience rather than a necessity: you can reach a lot of downtown on foot, by metro from the Bonaventure stop, or through the underground pedestrian network that Tourisme Montréal lists as a connection at the station. A car earns its place when there are bags, when it is raining or minus fifteen, when the party is more than two, or when you have a tight schedule.
For an evening at the arena see our page on concert and sports limousine transfers, and for a hockey night the Bell Centre's own site lists the event calendar (its events run into 2027). Pickups after the event can be arranged as a return booking from the same booker.
Comparison: ways to leave Gare Centrale
| Option | Typical time | Cost note | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metro (Bonaventure or McGill) | 5–25 min across downtown | Lowest | Light luggage, central hotels, solo travellers |
| 747 bus to YUL | 45–70 min | Low, STM fare | Budget airport trips with flexible timing |
| Taxi at the station | 25–45 min to YUL | Meter, can rise with traffic | One-off trips with no booking |
| Rideshare (Uber) | 25–45 min to YUL | Meter plus surge | Short trips, spontaneous plans |
| REM (Brossard, Deux-Montagnes, Anse-à-l'Orme) | Varies by branch | Low, transit fare | Commuters to the South Shore and the west |
| Private car from TorontoBlackLimousine.net | 25–45 min to YUL | Fixed fare via booker | Bags, groups, tight timings, door-to-door |
If you are alone, travelling with a backpack and heading to a hotel one metro stop away, take the metro. If you are with a family, two bags each, a car seat and a 7 am flight, a pre-booked car is the lower-stress choice.
Station to Laval, the South Shore and the airports around Montréal
Distances to the places clients most often send from Gare Centrale:
- Laval, Centropolis area: about 20 km, 25–40 minutes (more at rush hour on the 15 and 40)
- Longueuil and Brossard (Quartier DIX30): about 15 km, 20–40 minutes depending on the bridge
- Montréal-Trudeau (YUL): about 20 km, 25–45 minutes
- Saint-Hubert (YHU): about 20 km, 25–40 minutes
Neighbourhood pages that go deeper: Laval limousine service and Longueuil and South Shore limousine service.
Gare Centrale to the Laurentians, Mont-Tremblant and the Eastern Townships
Many VIA passengers arrive, collect bags and go straight out of the city.
- Mont-Tremblant village: about 130 km, 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes via Highway 15 and 117
- Bromont: about 80 km, about 1 hour via Highway 10
- Magog and Orford: about 130 km, 1 hour 30 minutes
- Sherbrooke: about 160 km, 1 hour 45 minutes
See Montréal to Mont-Tremblant for ski season logistics, and Mont-Tremblant limousine and shuttle. The Eastern Townships have their own page too: Montréal to the Eastern Townships by private car.
Gare Centrale to Québec City, Ottawa and Toronto by road
Sometimes the train is the first leg and the road is the second. These are the long-haul distances from Montréal:

- Québec City: about 250 km, 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on traffic, via Highway 20 or 40 (Destination Québec cité gives the same range)
- Ottawa: about 200 km, 2 to 2.5 hours via Highway 417 and the 40
- Toronto: about 540 km, 5.5 to 6.5 hours via Highway 20 and the 401
Our route pages cover the stops, the language and the realities of each stretch: Montréal to Québec City car service, Ottawa to Montréal car service and Toronto to Montréal car service. Several corridor trips start at a station; the sister pages for Toronto Union Station and the other VIA stops are collected on the train stations hub.
Choosing a vehicle for a train arrival
- Executive Sedan: up to 3 passengers, 2 large and 2 carry-on bags. The right call for one or two business travellers.
- Luxury SUV: up to 6 passengers and 5–6 large bags. The practical choice for a family with winter luggage.
- Executive Sprinter: 12–14 passengers and 12 or more bags. For delegations, a wedding party arriving together, or a team on a shared schedule.
- Stretch Limousine and mini-coach / party bus: hourly vehicles; availability and the exact vehicle are confirmed at booking.
Child, toddler and booster seats are available when requested at booking. Tell us the age and weight so the right seat is installed.
Arriving late or leaving early: working with the station's hours
VIA's station hours are the practical boundary on this page: the building opens at 05:30 Monday to Saturday and 07:30 on Sunday, and closes at 23:00 across the week. The takeaway for a booking is simple: if your train is likely to arrive close to closing time, mention it in the booking notes so dispatch can plan around it.
Early departures are routine for our dispatch. A car for a 06:00 train is requested like any other, and the chauffeur is at the kerb a few minutes before your agreed time.
Language, courtesy and who you will meet
The service in Quebec is delivered in English and French. You will be greeted in whichever language you start in, and the chauffeur will switch freely. Visitors from Ontario are sometimes surprised by how comfortably bilingual the city is on the street, but a Francophone chauffeur is a real help if your destination is a small-town Eastern Townships address or an event where the signage is French only.
Our vehicles and chauffeurs are licensed and commercially insured, and the car is reserved for you from the moment of booking.
Booking, changes and cancellations
Book with your train number, the scheduled arrival time and the destination address.
Cancellation terms are the same across our service, measured from the scheduled pickup time: more than 72 hours' notice, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10%; 48 hours or less, 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show, 100%.
Business travellers who go back and forth between Toronto and Montréal every month can set up a standing arrangement through our corporate car service. Visitors who want the first hour of a Montréal stay handled for them can combine the train pickup with a private city tour with a driver.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a car from Montreal Central Station to the airport?
The trip is about 20 km and usually takes 25–45 minutes. The booker shows the exact all-in fare for your address and vehicle before you confirm, and the fare is fixed.
Where do I meet the chauffeur at Gare Centrale?
At the door you agree at booking. VIA Rail lists the station at 895 de la Gauchetière West, under the Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth hotel, and an accessible curbside drop-off zone to the left of the main entrance. Add the train number so dispatch can plan the approach.
Is the REM running to Gare Centrale and the airport?
REM's website shows 23 stations in service to Brossard, Deux-Montagnes and Anse-à-l'Orme, while the airport branch was in dynamic testing as of August 2026. Until it opens, the airport is reached by the 747 bus, taxi or a booked car.
Can you take me from Gare Centrale to Old Montréal?
Yes. Old Montréal is about 2 km away, 10–15 minutes by car. For a short hop with light luggage you can also walk or use the metro; a car is better with bags, in bad weather or with older passengers.
Does the station have baggage carts?
No. VIA Rail states there are no baggage carts in the station. A baggage checkroom is available during posted hours, and a chauffeur can carry your luggage from the agreed door.
What happens if my train is late?
Tell us through the booking confirmation. Waiting arrangements for train pickups are confirmed at booking, and we plan around a late arrival instead of leaving you to wait without a car.
Do you offer service in French?
Yes. Service in Quebec is available in English and French.
How far is it from Montréal to Québec City by car?
About 250 km, usually 2.5 to 3.5 hours via Highway 20 or 40. See our Montréal to Québec City page for stops and timings, and the booker for the fixed fare.
