An Ottawa to Montreal car service is the simplest way to cross the eastern end of the Windsor–Québec City corridor: about 200 km on Highway 417 and Autoroute 40, usually 2 to 2.5 hours from kerb to kerb, in one vehicle with one chauffeur and no connection to make. TorontoBlackLimousine.net books the run as a private transfer through our Toronto dispatch, which is staffed 24/7, and the online booker shows the exact fare for your two addresses before you pay.
This page is written for the person planning the trip: the lawyer leaving a Wellington Street meeting at 2 pm, the family flying into Ottawa and carrying on to a Montréal wedding, the delegation that lands at one airport and leaves from the other.
Why choose an Ottawa to Montreal car service?
An Ottawa to Montreal car service takes you from an Ottawa door to a Montréal door in about 2 to 2.5 hours over roughly 200 km, with no transfers and no luggage to carry through a station. Choose it when you have bags, a group, a tight schedule or a meeting that starts the moment you arrive.
The corridor is short enough to feel like a commute and long enough to be tiring when you drive it yourself. A chauffeur turns the 200 km into working or resting time, and you arrive without parking in Old Montréal.
Three situations favour the private car. The first is a group of two to six sharing one vehicle, with luggage, pickup and drop-off handled once. The second is a schedule the train does not fit, such as a 5 am pickup. The third is a transfer that starts or ends away from a station, for example from a government office in Ottawa to a conference hotel on Rue Sherbrooke. A single traveller with one bag, going station to station on a weekday, can do very well on VIA Rail, and we say so below.
The route: Highway 417 into Autoroute 40
Leaving Ottawa you take the Queensway, Highway 417, east. It runs out through Orléans and the edge of the National Capital Region, passes through eastern Ontario farmland and carries on across the provincial line into Quebec, where the same road is signed Autoroute 40. From that point the signs, the speed limit units and the exit names are French: "Est" means east, "Ouest" west, "Sortie" is an exit. The distance from central Ottawa to central Montréal is about 200 km, and the usual running time is 2 to 2.5 hours.

The drive is flat and straightforward, so the variation in the schedule comes from the ends rather than the middle. The Ottawa end can be slow around the Queensway at the afternoon peak. The Montréal end is where the clock moves: the last 40 to 50 minutes funnel traffic onto the island, and a collision on the approach can add half an hour or more. We plan the pickup time backwards from your arrival time and leave a margin for exactly this stretch.
For live conditions on the Ontario half of the trip, the province publishes Ontario 511, which carries road conditions, closures, roadwork and over 900 traffic camera images through its app. Quebec runs its own road-report service for the Autoroute 40 section.
Ottawa to Montreal by private car: the timeline
Most trips follow the same arc, and knowing it helps you choose a pickup time. The table shows a typical weekday run from central Ottawa to central Montréal; the booker works out the exact pickup for your address and the arrival time you ask for.
| Stage | Typical time | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Pickup in Ottawa | 0:00 | Chauffeur at the door or the arrivals curb; bags loaded |
| Queensway east to the provincial line | 0:50–1:10 | Highway 417 through Orléans and eastern Ontario |
| Autoroute 40 across western Quebec | 0:50–1:10 | French signage, same flat highway |
| Approach to the island of Montréal | 0:20–0:40 | The variable stretch, busiest at the peaks |
| Drop-off in Montréal | 2:00–2.5 h total | Hotel, office, residence or Gare Centrale |
If you are catching a flight or a train at the other end, add the usual cushion on top of the 2 to 2.5 hours.
Pickup in Ottawa: downtown, the station and the airport
Ottawa has three common starting points, and each has its own logistics.

Downtown and the Parliamentary precinct. Hotels, embassies and government offices are served at the door. Tell us which entrance you want.
Ottawa station. VIA Rail's Ottawa station is at 200 Tremblay Road, about 4 km from downtown, reached from the Queensway at the Vanier Parkway exit (exit 117). The station is staffed, has a waiting room and a business lounge, and opens early: Monday to Thursday from 03:45, Friday and Saturday from 04:45 and Sunday from 07:00, closing at 23:30 every day, according to VIA Rail's station page. See also our guide to the Ottawa train station car service.
Ottawa International Airport (YOW). The airport publishes a clear rule set. Pre-arranged services such as luxury vehicles use Pillars 12 and 13 on Level 1, the arrivals level, and passenger loading is not permitted on Level 3, the departures level, as listed on the airport's ground transportation page. Drivers who are waiting are directed to the Cell Phone Lot rather than the curb. For the airport itself, including terminal logistics, see Ottawa airport limo.
Airport pickups on this route include flight tracking, so the car adjusts to your actual landing time. On international arrivals, 60 minutes of waiting after landing is included, and on domestic arrivals 30 minutes. A name-board meet-and-greet inside arrivals is available as an add-on.
Drop-off in Montréal: Old Montréal, downtown and Gare Centrale
Montréal drop-offs fall into four groups.
Old Montréal and the Vieux-Port. Narrow streets and a one-way system, so give us the hotel name as well as the street number.
Downtown and the Golden Square Mile. Hotels, law firms, the convention district and the university campuses.
Gare Centrale. VIA Rail's Montréal Central Station is at 895 de la Gauchetière West, underneath the Queen Elizabeth Hotel, and is linked to the Bonaventure and McGill metro stations. VIA Rail lists connections to exo commuter trains, the REM, Amtrak and the 747 express bus to Trudeau Airport. The station opens at 5:30 on weekdays and Saturdays and 7:30 on Sundays and closes at 23:00. For pickups and drop-offs there see Montréal Central Station car service.
Trudeau Airport (YUL). Transfers to the airport are common at the end of a business trip: a morning Ottawa meeting, a car to Montréal, and an evening international flight. Details are on the Montréal airport limo page. There is no border formality on this route, but time-of-day traffic on the island still matters.
Ottawa to Montreal limo versus VIA Rail, bus, flight and rental car
The honest comparison matters because a car service is not the best answer for every traveller. The table sets out the real alternatives.

| Option | Typical time | Cost note | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private car service (TorontoBlackLimousine.net) | 2–2.5 h door to door, about 200 km | Fixed fare via booker | Groups, luggage, odd hours, door-to-door |
| VIA Rail | Roughly 2 h station to station, plus getting to each station | Often the lowest for one person | Solo travellers on weekday timetables |
| Intercity bus | Longer than driving; depends on stops | Low | Flexible budgets, no luggage constraints |
| Flight | Short in the air, long overall once airports are added | Varies widely | Rarely worth it for 200 km |
| Rental car | 2–2.5 h driving plus pickup and return | Fuel, rental and parking add up | Drivers who want the car for several days |
Where VIA Rail wins: one person with a carry-on, travelling station to station on a weekday, is hard to beat on price, and Gare Centrale connects straight into the metro. Where the car wins: a group, a golf bag, a stroller, a before-dawn pickup, or a drop-off away from the stations. Ottawa station is about 4 km out of downtown, so train travellers add a second leg at the Ottawa end that the car does not need.
Choosing the vehicle for the Ottawa to Montreal run
Our fleet page shows the full line-up.
- Executive Sedan: up to 3 passengers with 2 large and 2 carry-on bags. The standard choice for a solo or two-person business trip.
- Luxury SUV: six seats and space for five or six full-size cases. Best for families and for anyone with a lot of luggage.
- Executive Sprinter: 12 to 14 passengers with 12+ bags. The practical answer for delegations, wedding parties and crews.
Stretch limousines and mini-coaches are booked by the hour, so they suit events in either city more than a straight run between them. Availability and the exact vehicle are confirmed at booking. Child, toddler and booster seats are provided on request when you book, which matters on a two-hour drive with a young passenger.
Business travel and same-day returns
The pair supports a lot of day-return work: federal departments and their Montréal counterparts, law and consulting firms with offices in both cities, and the conference circuit. For a same-day return the practical sequence is a morning pickup in Ottawa, a Montréal meeting block, and an afternoon return that leaves the island before the evening peak builds.

If your schedule has several stops, treat the corridor as a day booking rather than two transfers. Our hourly chauffeur service covers multi-stop days, and the corporate car service page explains how accounts and invoicing work for regular travel.
The Gatineau side and Autoroute 50
Ottawa has a Quebec twin, Gatineau, across the Ottawa River, and for trips that begin in Gatineau the shape of the journey changes. Tourisme Outaouais notes that Gatineau is only a few minutes from Ottawa and about two hours from Montréal by car, via Autoroute 15 and then Autoroute 50, as set out on its how to get to the Outaouais page.
That means a pickup in Gatineau, for example at the Casino du Lac-Leamy or the Canadian Museum of History, usually goes along Autoroute 50 on the Quebec side of the river and joins the island from the north, rather than crossing back into Ontario first. The distance is roughly the same 200 km and the running time is again about two hours. Gatineau pickups are covered on our Gatineau limo page, and Ottawa pickups on Ottawa limo.
Winter driving and Quebec's winter-tire rule
Between December and March this is a real winter road, with snow squalls that can reduce visibility and slow the Montréal approach. Quebec's winter-tire law is worth knowing. Québec.ca states that winter tires are required from December 1 to March 15 on vehicles registered in Québec, and that the requirement does not apply to vehicles registered outside the province. Ontario-registered vehicles are therefore exempt, but the weather does not care about registration.
If your time is flexible, say so at booking, and give us a mobile number that reaches you on the day. A late departure that arrives safely beats a punctual one that does not.
Language and etiquette across the provincial line
Once the car crosses into Quebec, the road signs, radio and most services run in French, though English is widely understood in Montréal and in all of its hotels. Our service in Quebec is provided in English and French, so the chauffeur can greet you and a French-speaking colleague in whichever language you prefer.
When you give us a Montréal pickup address, include the unit and the buzzer code if there is one. Street names follow the pattern "Rue" or "Boulevard", and "Ouest" and "Est" give the direction.
Ottawa to Montreal airport transfers: YOW to YUL
A less obvious use of the route is the airport-to-airport transfer. A traveller lands at Ottawa International Airport and must reach Trudeau for an international departure the same day without rebooking through a hub. Ottawa airport to downtown Montréal is about 210 km, 2 h 15 min to 2 h 45 min, and the car continues straight from arrivals. The reverse also happens: a flight into Montréal and a meeting in Ottawa the next morning.
For the first leg into central Ottawa, public transit is sensible when you are travelling light. The airport's page lists OC Transpo bus 105, which runs 24 hours, and O-Train Line 4, which runs from 6 am to midnight between the airport and South Keys station.
How booking works and what the fare includes
You do not need to ask for a price: the booker shows an exact fare, all in, for your exact addresses, vehicle and date, before you pay. That is the one place our prices live, and it keeps the number honest, because it responds to the actual route, the pickup time and the vehicle class rather than a table that is out of date.
You enter the two addresses, choose the vehicle class and the pickup time, add flight or train details if relevant, and confirm. Our Toronto dispatch, staffed 24/7, then looks after the trip, using licensed and commercially insured vehicles and chauffeurs.
Changing or cancelling an Ottawa to Montreal transfer
Plans shift, and the cancellation terms are measured from the scheduled pickup time. More than 72 hours' notice is no charge. At 72 hours or less the charge is 10%, at 48 hours or less 50%, and at 24 hours or less, or on a no-show, 100%. If you land late, flight tracking means the car adjusts to your actual arrival. For general policy questions read our FAQ.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Ottawa from Montreal by car?
It is about 200 km from central Ottawa to central Montréal, usually 2 to 2.5 hours on Highway 417 and Autoroute 40. The Montréal approach is the part that varies, so the booker sets the pickup time with that margin built in.
How long does an Ottawa to Montreal car service take?
Plan on 2 to 2.5 hours door to door. Add time if you are travelling at the Friday afternoon peak or in a winter storm. If you have a fixed arrival time such as a flight or a hearing, tell us the deadline and we work backwards from it.
How much is an Ottawa to Montreal limo?
The fare depends on your pickup address, drop-off address, vehicle class and date, so we do not publish figures on this page. The online booker shows the exact all-in fare for your trip before you confirm, and it is a fixed fare, quoted before you book.
Is a private car or VIA Rail better from Ottawa to Montreal?
For one person with light luggage going between the two stations on a weekday, the train is often the better value. For groups, bags, early or late hours, or addresses that are not close to either station, a private car is simpler and usually quicker door to door.
Can you pick me up from Ottawa airport and drive me to Montreal?
Yes. We track the flight, so the car follows your real landing time, and the free waiting period is longer after an international arrival than a domestic one. Pre-arranged services use the airport's designated pillars on the arrivals level, and a name board inside arrivals can be added.
Do I need a passport to go from Ottawa to Montreal?
No. Both cities are in Canada and there is no border crossing on this route. Carry your usual photo ID, and a passport if you are travelling on to an international flight from Trudeau Airport.
Do I need winter tires to drive from Ottawa to Montreal?
Quebec requires winter tires from December 1 to March 15 on vehicles registered in Québec, and the rule does not apply to vehicles registered outside the province, according to Québec.ca. Whatever the registration, our dispatch decides whether the car is fit for the day's conditions.
Can you take me from Gatineau to Montreal instead of Ottawa?
Yes. Gatineau is a few minutes from Ottawa, and the trip to Montréal is about two hours by Autoroute 50 and Autoroute 15. Give us the exact Gatineau address when you book and the booker prices and schedules it for the Quebec side.
Can I book a car seat or a larger vehicle for the trip?
Yes. Ask for child, toddler or booster seats when you book, and choose the Luxury SUV or Executive Sprinter for a larger family or group. Stretch limousines and mini-coaches are confirmed at booking because availability varies.
