Toronto to London Ontario car service is a trip people take for very different reasons: a board meeting with a same-day return, a first-year student and four boxes on the first Sunday of September, an evening at the arena, a wedding in a barn outside the city. The road is the same for all of them, Highway 401 west for about two hours, but the planning is not. This page sets out the distance and timing, the pickup and drop-off points at both ends, and an honest comparison with the train and the bus, because for some travellers VIA Rail is the better answer.

No prices appear on this page. The online booker shows the exact all-in fare for your pickup address, your London destination and your vehicle before you confirm.

How far is London, Ontario from Toronto, and how long does the drive take?

London is about 190 km from central Toronto, about 160 to 170 km from Toronto Pearson, and usually 1 hour 55 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes by Highway 401 in ordinary traffic. Rush hours around Mississauga and Milton, and collisions at Cambridge or Woodstock, can add an hour.

The road is one of the simplest in Ontario to describe: take Highway 401 west and keep going. Highway 402 begins at London and continues west toward Sarnia, so the 401 and 402 together form the spine of southwestern Ontario. VIA Rail's own page for the Toronto to London train lists a distance of 185 km, which is a rail measurement rather than a road one, so use the road figures below for driving.

Pickup areaApproximate road distance to central LondonTypical drive time (light traffic)
Downtown Toronto and Union Stationabout 190 km1 h 55 min - 2 h 30 min
Toronto Pearsonabout 160-170 km1 h 40 min - 2 h 10 min
Mississauga and Oakvilleabout 165-180 km1 h 45 min - 2 h 20 min
Scarborough, Markham and Pickeringabout 215-240 km2 h 15 min - 3 h

Add time for the Toronto end of the trip. A downtown pickup at 4:30 p.m. on a weekday is a different journey from a 10 a.m. pickup, and the first 40 km of the 401 west of Toronto can take as long as the next 100.

The route on Highway 401: where the time is won and lost

From downtown you reach the 401 by the Gardiner and the 427, or by way of the QEW and Highway 403 into Mississauga. From Pearson you are already on the doorstep. West of Mississauga the 401 runs through Milton, past Guelph, and through the Cambridge and Kitchener area. It then continues through Woodstock and Ingersoll to London.

Three places account for most delays:

  1. Mississauga to Milton, where commuter traffic can slow the road in both directions on weekdays.
  2. The Cambridge and Kitchener interchanges, where a single collision can back traffic up for many kilometres.
  3. Woodstock to London, which is quieter, but where weather and collisions still have consequences because there are few alternatives.

For live conditions, Ontario's 511 service publishes camera images, incidents, closures and road conditions. A chauffeur watches this because it is a driver's job, and you can too if you want to know why you are slowing down.

Pickups at the Toronto end: hotels, Union Station and Pearson

The most common starting points are:

  • Downtown and Bay Street hotels, with the car outside the entrance at your pickup time.
  • Union Station, for guests who arrive by VIA or GO and want to continue by road. Our page on Union Station car service covers the pickup.
  • Toronto Pearson, for travellers who land in Toronto and need to be in London that evening. Every airport pickup is flight-tracked, and the free waiting time is 60 minutes for an international landing and 30 for a domestic one. A name-board greeting inside arrivals can be added. See Pearson airport limo.
  • Homes and offices across the GTA.

A Pearson pickup is the fastest road start because the car is already west of the busiest part of the city. For a landing at a quiet hour, the trip to London can take less than two hours.

Drop-offs in London: downtown, the arena, Western and the hospitals

London's centre is compact, and the main destinations are easy to describe.

Downtown. Canada Life Place, the city's downtown arena, is at 99 Dundas Street. Covent Garden Market, the Grand Theatre and most of the central hotels are within a short walk or ride. If you are arriving by train, the VIA station is at 205 York Street, a few minutes from the core.

Western University. Western sits north of the centre, and move-in and graduation days produce traffic that is worth planning for. The next section covers that.

Western Fair District and the east end are the other regular destinations, and Storybook Gardens, Fanshawe Pioneer Village and Springbank Park are the usual family stops, all listed on the Tourism London website.

For addresses outside the centre, such as farm venues, industrial parks and hospital campuses, give us the full address and any gate or entrance instructions, because a large vehicle cannot always turn at the last moment.

Western University: move-in weekend and campus trips

Western's residence move-in takes place in early September, and each residence has its own date and booked time slot through the university's myHousing portal. The residence office publishes a move-in planning guide and move-in maps, and the maps tell drivers to set their navigation to the intersection of Richmond Street and University Drive. Cars enter by the Richmond Street gates and follow University Drive to a marshalling area, where each residence has its own unloading zone and vehicles are asked not to wait in it.

A chauffeur-driven trip works well for this because the driver handles the 190 km and the queue, while the family handles the unloading. Practical points:

  • Book a Luxury SUV for a student with several boxes and a parent; an Executive Sedan holds only 2 large and 2 carry-on bags.
  • For a student with a full dorm kit and two parents, an Executive Sprinter may be easier than two cars.
  • Arrive at the time slot on the portal, not earlier, and not much later.
  • Book the return in advance. The afternoon after move-in is busy on the 401.

Return visits for reading week, Thanksgiving and the end of term follow the same logic on a smaller scale: the 401 on the Friday before a long weekend is slow, and a pre-booked pickup is easier than a last-minute search. Child seats are available when requested at booking.

Canada Life Place, the Knights and the theatre season

If you remember the arena as Budweiser Gardens, note that it has a new name. London's downtown arena is now Canada Life Place, as the venue's own site shows, and it lists London Knights games alongside concerts, comedy and touring shows. The same listing includes a Broadway in London series running from November 5 through May 25, with titles such as Mrs. Doubtfire, A Christmas Story: The Musical, Legally Blonde and Jersey Boys, as well as touring acts and family shows through the winter.

For an evening in London from Toronto, there are two sensible approaches:

  1. Out and back in one trip. The car waits or returns for you after the show. A 7 p.m. start usually means a late departure from London and arrival back in Toronto after midnight, which is fine on a quiet night and less so after a snowfall.
  2. Overnight in London. Many groups stay downtown and travel back the next morning, which removes the late-night 401 from the plan.

Pickup after an event is the harder half. Arena crowds leave at once, and pre-booking the return at a fixed time is far easier than hunting for a car in the crush. Our page on concert and sports limos covers this pattern.

London International Airport (YXU) transfers

London International Airport is at 10 Seabrook Way. Its website lists airline partners including Porter, Air Canada, WestJet, Sunwing and Air Transat, with destinations such as Toronto, Calgary, Orlando, Cancun, Punta Cana, Montego Bay and Fort Lauderdale, and notes that schedules are seasonal and that travellers should book direct with the airline partners.

For ground transport, two patterns are common. A traveller who has flown into Pearson and needs to reach London travels the 160 to 170 km by road, as described above. A traveller who has flown into London and needs to reach Toronto does the same trip in reverse, and our London airport page covers that pickup. The two-way flow is why Toronto to London is among our regular airport-linked routes.

Be clear about the trade-offs. VIA's Toronto to London page lists an average trip of 2 hours 27 minutes, a distance of 185 km and 41 departures a week. If you are travelling alone, from Union Station to a downtown London address, the train is often the lower-cost choice and a perfectly good one. VIA's London station page lists taxis in front of the station, and Uber and Lyft among the local options.

A chauffeur is the better choice when you are leaving from somewhere other than Union Station, when you have luggage or equipment, when you are travelling with children or a student's belongings, when the group is larger than two, when your trip ends in a place the train does not serve, or when the time you need to travel falls between departures. For a comparison with ride-hailing, see limo versus rideshare.

Business trips: the same-day return

Many Toronto to London trips are corporate: a client meeting, a court date, a site visit, a conference day. The structure is usually one of two:

  • One-way transfer, where a colleague or a taxi handles the way back.
  • Same-day return, where the car waits or comes back at a booked time.

For a same-day return, book the outbound to arrive well before the meeting, allow a buffer for the 401, and fix the return time with a margin of 30 to 45 minutes. A meeting that ends at 4 p.m. and a car booked for 4:15 is a plan that fails; a car booked for 4:45 is one that works. Read about corporate car service for account arrangements, and about hourly chauffeur service when the day involves several stops in London.

Events in London through the year

Tourism London lists the city's events, and several on the autumn and winter calendar generate travel from Toronto: the Forest City Film Festival from October 15 to 25, 2026, the 45th London Christmas Craft Festival from December 3 to 6, 2026, and Taste Ex, the London food and drink experience, on January 22 and 23, 2027. Western's football games at Western Alumni Stadium and the Knights at Canada Life Place add weekly demand in season.

Pre-booking is sensible for every one of them. Hotel rooms fill, and so does the supply of cars at the end of an event.

Winter driving and the 401

Highway 401 between Toronto and London is a heavily used freight route, and winter weather can slow it quickly. Ontario's winter driving guidance recommends four winter tires, notes that they improve traction on snow and ice, mentions a possible insurance discount, and advises clearing snow and ice from windows, lights, mirrors and roof, keeping the tank at least half full and carrying a winter survival kit. Allow extra time in poor conditions, check 511, and treat a closed lane as a reason to delay. A flexible pickup time is the single biggest help.

Choosing the vehicle

  • Executive Sedan seats up to 3 with 2 large and 2 carry-on bags: a business traveller or a couple.
  • Luxury SUV seats up to 6 with 5 or 6 large bags: family trips and student move-ins.
  • Executive Sprinter seats 12 to 14 with 12 or more bags: wedding parties, delegations and teams.
  • Stretch limousine, party bus and mini-coach are hired by the hour for nights out in London; availability and the exact vehicle are confirmed at booking.

See the fleet page for the full range, and if the trip is a wedding, our wedding limo page covers timelines. Alcohol on board is governed by Ontario law and confirmed at booking.

How booking works

Book online: type the Toronto pickup, the London address, the day and hour, the party size and the bags. A fixed fare appears for that exact trip and vehicle, and paying locks it in. All chauffeurs and vehicles are licensed and commercially insured, and the Toronto desk is staffed day and night. The cancellation scale, measured from the scheduled pickup time, is: no charge beyond 72 hours; 10% at 72 hours or less; 50% at 48 hours or less; 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show. Further answers are on the FAQ page, and for the city itself see London limo service.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive from Toronto to London, Ontario?

Usually 1 hour 55 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes on Highway 401 from central Toronto in ordinary traffic. From Pearson it is closer to 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes. Collisions and rush hours can add an hour.

How far is London, Ontario from Toronto?

About 190 km from central Toronto and about 160 to 170 km from Pearson, by Highway 401. VIA Rail lists 185 km for the rail route.

How much is a car service from Toronto to London, Ontario?

That turns on the pickup point, the London address and the vehicle. The booker displays the exact all-in fare for the trip before you confirm it, a fixed amount rather than a running meter.

Is the train better than a car service?

For one person travelling between Union Station and downtown London, VIA Rail is often the lowest-cost choice, with an average journey of 2 hours 27 minutes. A car service is better with luggage, with a group, from an address away from Union Station or at a time between departures.

Can you take my student to Western on move-in day?

Yes. Book a Luxury SUV or an Executive Sprinter depending on how much is travelling, and arrive at the time slot Western gives the student. Western's move-in maps ask drivers to navigate to Richmond Street and University Drive.

Do you pick up after events at Canada Life Place?

Yes, with a pre-booked time. The arena was formerly called Budweiser Gardens, and crowds leave all at once, so booking the return in advance is much easier than finding a car on the night.

Can you pick me up at Pearson and drive me to London?

Yes. The flight is tracked, you get 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing or 30 after a domestic one, and a name-board greeter inside arrivals is an optional extra.

Does winter weather stop the trip?

Not as a rule, but extra time is built in. Ontario 511 publishes road conditions and forecasts, and the chauffeur decides the safest way to proceed on the day.
