Windsor to Detroit car service: how the cross-border ride works

Windsor and Detroit face each other across the Detroit River, and the distance between the two downtowns is small, about 3 km in a straight line. The trip is not small in practice, because a border sits in the middle of it. A Windsor to Detroit car service has to deal with two inspection points, three crossings, documents, wait times and different arrival procedures at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. The ride is short on the map and variable in time.

That is the reason to book a chauffeur who does this regularly. On the Canadian side your driver collects you at a Windsor hotel, home, the Windsor casino district or Windsor airport. On the US side the car goes to your downtown Detroit hotel, a venue, a meeting or Detroit Metropolitan Airport. The border is handled as part of the trip, and the border wait is part of the trip time. Exact pickup and drop-off points on the US side are confirmed at booking.

This page explains the three crossings, the documents travellers need, the timing from different starting points and how a private car compares with the alternatives. For a single online quote, the booker gives an exact all-in fare for your addresses before you pay.

Which crossings connect Windsor and Detroit?

Three road crossings link Windsor and Detroit: the Ambassador Bridge, the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which opened to vehicles on July 27, 2026. All three list round-the-clock operation. Your car service chooses the crossing on the day.

Here is what the official sources say about each.

Ambassador Bridge. The Ambassador Bridge website says the crossing is open every day, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It links Detroit with Windsor across the Detroit River.

Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel site says it operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and gives its Detroit location as 100 E Jefferson Ave. Its Detroit end is on East Jefferson Avenue, in the downtown area.

Gordie Howe International Bridge. According to the bridge's FAQ, the bridge opened to vehicular traffic on July 27, 2026, is open to all vehicle types and operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The bridge's own access page describes Canadian access via Highway 401, the E.C. Row Expressway and Ojibway Parkway, and US access via Interstate 75 in Michigan. As of 2026 the bridge authority publishes a passenger-vehicle toll of 8 Canadian dollars or 5.75 US dollars per crossing for pay-per-crossing lanes, with a lower rate for Breakaway account holders. Tolls are set by the operator, not by us.

Which crossing is fastest?

It depends on the day, the hour and what is happening on the roads feeding the port of entry. The CBSA border wait times page lists all three Windsor crossings together, and its figures are estimates that "can vary" with major events, holiday travel and enforcement actions. The CBSA also notes that the figures exclude delays on the roads leading to the port of entry, so a short posted wait does not guarantee a short trip.

Practical guidance:

  • Downtown Windsor to downtown Detroit. All three crossings are close to the city centres, and any of them can queue for the reasons above.
  • Highway 401 corridor. The Gordie Howe bridge connects to Highway 401 and the E.C. Row Expressway on the Canadian side and to I-75 on the Michigan side, so it is a natural fit for travellers coming off the 401.
  • Peak hours. Weekday commuting and Friday and Sunday leisure traffic can lengthen waits at every crossing.
  • Late night. Waits usually shrink, but check conditions before leaving for a very early flight.

Tell us at booking if you have a preference, or if a member of your party holds a NEXUS card. Otherwise the route is chosen on the day. Border wait time is part of the trip, and we do not guarantee it.

Documents you need to cross between Windsor and Detroit

Every adult passenger needs valid travel documents, and the exact requirements depend on citizenship. Check the official sources before you travel, because rules change.

  • Entering Canada. The CBSA travel documents page says a valid Canadian passport is recommended for Canadian citizens and permanent residents, and that NEXUS or FAST cards, enhanced driver's licences and enhanced photo ID are also accepted for citizens. US citizens are advised to carry a passport, or other documents proving name, date of birth and citizenship. US permanent residents entering by land present their permanent resident card. International travellers need a valid passport and may need a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization.
  • Entering the United States. CBP states that US citizens can enter by land with a US passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or NEXUS card, and that Canadian citizens can enter by land with a valid passport, an enhanced driver's licence or a NEXUS card.
  • Visitors from elsewhere. Check the CBP and CBSA pages for your own nationality before you book. This page cannot cover every case.

Children travelling with a chauffeur and without both parents often need extra documentation; confirm the rules for your family on the CBSA and CBP websites. Child, toddler and booster seats can be requested at booking.

Windsor to Detroit by private car versus other ways to cross

The alternatives to a private car are fewer than visitors expect, and each has a clear use case.

OptionTypical timeCost noteBest for
Private chauffeur (our service)Short ride plus border wait; DTW trips about 1 h or more door to doorFixed fare via booker, quoted before you payAirport transfers, groups, business, event nights, anyone with luggage
Public transit or cross-border bus (check the operator)Variable; depends on timetable and borderLowest of the optionsLight travellers on a fixed schedule
Taxi or rideshareSimilar to a private car if crossing is permittedMeter plus surge; operators may not cross the borderShort local hops on one side only
Rental carShort ride plus border waitRental plus fuel plus cross-border rules to checkVisitors who want a car in both cities
Walking or cyclingSlowFree or lowCyclists and walkers on the Gordie Howe multi-use path, with travel documents

The Gordie Howe site describes a multi-use path for cyclists and walkers and says valid travel documents such as a passport or a NEXUS card are required on it. That is a real option for a day out, but it is not a way to move luggage or a group.

Windsor to Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW)

Detroit Metropolitan Airport, usually called DTW, is on the US side, roughly 40 km from downtown Windsor by road, and about 30 km from downtown Detroit. Door to door from Windsor, plan on about an hour or more in normal conditions, plus the border wait. Because border delays are unpredictable, leave generous margins for early flights.

Glass-walled airport terminal walkway at dusk

The Detroit Metro Airport website lists two terminals, McNamara and Evans. Its ground transportation pages state that customers with prearranged ground transportation from a provider other than an official Detroit Metro provider may meet their driver in designated areas of their terminal's baggage claim or Ground Transportation Center, and that the meeting location should be arranged with the provider before arrival. The same pages say only customers with advance reservations may use such services, and that soliciting rides is banned. In other words, a booked chauffeur is the right way to do it.

The airport also recommends arriving 90 minutes before a domestic departure and 120 minutes before an international departure. Add the border wait to those figures when you work backwards from your flight time.

For the full cross-border airport picture, including Buffalo and Plattsburgh, see our Detroit airport guide and the cross-border limo service page.

Windsor to downtown Detroit: hotels, meetings and events

City to city, the drive is short. The detours are the border formalities and the Detroit-side addresses. A typical business trip might take you from a Windsor office to a downtown Detroit hotel in a little more than the border wait plus a short drive. Event nights are the main exception: stadium and arena games, concerts and festivals fill the downtown roads, and parking near venues is limited. Ask the venue for its current name and entrance before you book, since venue names change.

For event nights, book the return as well as the outbound. A late-night return across the border is simple when the car is already arranged, and much less simple at midnight with a crowd waiting for taxis. See concert and sports limo for event planning.

Windsor's casino district is another common start. The casino limo page covers group trips to casino resorts in Ontario.

Groups, weddings and corporate travel across the border

Cross-border groups are common here because friends, relatives and business partners live on both sides. Our vehicle classes work as follows:

Black stretch limousine parked on a sunny street
Black stretch limousine parked on a sunny street
  • Executive Sedan: up to 3 passengers, 2 large and 2 carry-on bags.
  • Luxury SUV: up to 6 passengers, 5 to 6 large bags.
  • Executive Sprinter: 12 to 14 passengers, 12 or more bags.
  • Stretch Limousine: 8 to 10 passengers, booked by the hour.
  • Mini-coach / party bus: 20 to 30 passengers, booked by the hour.

Stretch limousines, party buses and coaches are subject to availability, and the exact vehicle is confirmed at booking. Alcohol rules follow Ontario and Michigan law and are confirmed at booking; we never promise drinks on board. Prom and graduation trips are strictly alcohol-free. Longer cross-border journeys that start in Windsor

Many travellers use Windsor and Detroit as a stepping stone. A flight from DTW, a stay in Detroit and a drive to Toronto is a common sequence. The Toronto to Detroit car service page covers the 370 km run along Highway 401 from the GTA, while the Windsor limo page covers local service within the city. Travellers connecting to Buffalo from Toronto may like the Toronto to Buffalo airport page.

Flight tracking, waiting time and meeting your driver

Flight tracking is included on every airport pickup. On international arrivals you get 60 minutes of free waiting after landing; on domestic arrivals, 30 minutes. If you land at DTW on a flight from Europe or Asia and clear US immigration before heading to Windsor, the 60-minute window is counted from landing, and the border crossing is still ahead. A name-board meet-and-greet inside arrivals is available as an add-on at booking. Because the terminal rules require you to arrange the meeting location with the provider, tell us your airline, terminal and flight number when you book.

Safety, insurance and dispatch

Vehicles and chauffeurs are licensed and commercially insured. Dispatch runs 24/7, which matters on a route where weather, border closures, bridge incidents and flight delays can change the plan on short notice. Tell dispatch about any change as early as you can.

What a fixed fare means here

A fixed fare means the price shown in the booker is the price for the stated addresses and vehicle, quoted before you pay. We do not publish rate cards for cross-border service. If your plans change, the standard terms apply: more than 72 hours' notice, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10%; 48 hours or less, 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show, 100%, measured from the scheduled pickup time.
