Montebello and the Outaouais shore: a stop worth planning, not just passing
Most people who drive between Gatineau and Montréal pick a side of the Ottawa River and keep their eyes on the clock. The Québec bank rewards a pause. Montebello, in the Outaouais, is where the river road produces a cluster of reasons to stop within a few kilometres of each other: a national historic site, a large resort hotel, a drive-through wildlife park and a main street with a chocolate factory and a cheese shop.
Parks Canada describes Manoir Papineau as sitting in Montebello, along the Ottawa River, between Montréal and Gatineau, and the village tourist office is the Outaouais region's official welcome point. That makes it the natural pause in a Gatineau limo service trip heading east, or the natural destination for a day trip out of Montréal.
This guide is written from the curb: how far it is, which road to take, what is open when, where a car can stop and when it is smarter to keep driving. It is useful whether or not you book anything. Hours below are the 2026 hours as the operators published them; seasons shift each year, so use the linked official pages before you set out.
How far is Montebello from Gatineau, Ottawa and Montréal?

Parks Canada puts Manoir Papineau in Montebello about 70 km from Gatineau and about 135 km from Montréal. Expect roughly an hour from Gatineau and an hour and a half from Montréal, depending on traffic and the road you choose.
The distances come from Parks Canada's visitor page, which gives both figures and tells visitors to approach by Highway 50 and then Route 323 south, following the signs. The drive times are our estimates from those distances, not official numbers, so add buffer on a Friday afternoon or a long weekend.
For a trip that starts in Ottawa rather than Gatineau, add the bridge crossing and the approach roads on both banks. Our Ottawa limo service page covers pickups there, and the Ottawa to Montréal car service page covers the whole run if Montebello is a mid-journey stop rather than a day destination.
Route 148 or Autoroute 50: which road to take
Two roads run along the north shore, and they feel different.
Autoroute 50 is the faster, newer parallel road. Tourisme Montréal describes it as winding past farmland and along the Du Lièvre River near Buckingham, and Parks Canada's directions to Montebello use it. If your goal is to arrive, this is the road.
Route 148 is the old highway, a two-lane road that passes through Thurso, Papineauville and Plaisance with views of the Ottawa River. Tourisme Montréal's Ottawa to Montréal road trip guide recommends it for the scenery and notes it eventually reaches the outskirts of Hawkesbury, about 10 km inside Ontario.
Our approach is simple. For an appointment, use the autoroute; for a leisurely day, use 148 for part of the way and rejoin the autoroute. Dispatch plans the routing when you book, and you can tell the chauffeur which you prefer.
Manoir Papineau National Historic Site: what to see and when
The former estate of Louis-Joseph Papineau, one of the leading figures in Canadian politics, is at 500A Notre-Dame Street. The site has a manor house with four towers, a garden with an outdoor exhibit, a family museum with objects that belonged to the Papineau family and a lookout with red chairs.
Season and hours (2026). Parks Canada lists the site as open from 16 May to 12 October 2026, 10 am to 5 pm. From 16 May to 23 June it opens Saturdays and Sundays plus Monday 18 May; from 24 June to 7 September, Wednesday to Sunday; and from 8 September to 12 October, Saturdays and Sundays plus Monday 12 October, the Thanksgiving holiday. Free admission ended on 7 September, and regular fees apply since.
Tours. The manor's interior is accessible only by guided tour. English tours are listed at 10:45 am, 1:30 pm and 3:15 pm; French tours at 11:15 am, 2:00 pm and 4:15 pm. Extra tours are often added, so check the reception desk or call the site.
Parking. The lot is next to the Montebello train station at 500 Notre-Dame Street. The site lists restrooms, a picnic area, a gift shop, accessible services and bus parking.
If your date is outside the season, the exterior and the village are still worth the stop, but the interior is closed. The season dates above are for 2026; confirm the next year's calendar on the Parks Canada page.
Fairmont Le Château Montebello: the façade stop and what non-guests should ask
The Fairmont sits at 392 Notre-Dame on about 300 acres, with a Stanley Thompson-designed golf course, a spa, an aquatic centre, indoor tennis and squash and hiking and biking trails. Tourisme Montréal calls out its "upscale-rustic" façade and suggests stopping to admire it.
For a visitor who is not staying, the honest advice is to ask first. The hotel's own page describes guest parking, dining and activities, but does not set out a day-visit offer. Whether non-guests can park, walk through the lobby or reserve a table is for the hotel to confirm. A chauffeur can pull up for a few minutes, but we would not promise more than the front drive.
For overnight guests, the arrival is the easy part: a chauffeur takes the main entrance, luggage goes to the door, and the car leaves. Parks Canada notes the hotel and its main outbuildings lie outside the boundaries of the national historic site, so the two are separate visits rather than one.
Parc Oméga: a 12 km drive-through
Parc Oméga, at 399 Route 323 North, is a wildlife park built around a 12 km route that you tour from your own vehicle, according to the park's website. The park lists itself as open year-round, with opening hours and ticketing on separate pages; tickets are sold only through the park's online ticket office.

Autumn adds a rule worth knowing. During the deer breeding season, September through December, visitors should not approach or feed the males and should drive slowly. Visitors can feed deer with carrots.
Two practical notes. First, check the park's hours for your date, because the hours are not on the main page and the park holds special events. Second, a chauffeured vehicle is a different case from your own: how a limousine, SUV or Sprinter is treated on the route is for the park to confirm, so tell dispatch at booking and we will raise it with you. If the park is the goal of your day, say so; it changes the timing.
The village stop: tourist office, chocolate, cheese and brewery
Montebello's main street is Notre-Dame. The official Montebello Tourist Office is at 502A, in a 1931 heritage building made of red cedar, open all year. It offers maps, current itineraries for Montebello and the Outaouais, WiFi, toilets and an electric vehicle charging station, with the ChocoMotive economuseum on site.
Tourisme Montréal's road-trip guide names the Chocomotive chocolate factory, Fromagerie Montebello and the Brasseurs de Montebello microbrewery as local stops. Alcohol rules follow Ontario and Québec law and are confirmed at booking; the point of a hired car is that nobody needs to drive afterwards.
The pickup reality in the village is simple, because the three main addresses sit on the same stretch of Notre-Dame, a short walk apart: the Parks Canada lot at 500, the tourist office at 502A and the manor itself at 500A. A chauffeur can set you down at the tourist office, collect you at the Parks Canada lot after your tour, and keep the day moving without a second parking search. Parks Canada's lot is next to the Montebello train station, which is a useful landmark when you are describing where to meet. The village is small enough that a side-street meeting point is easy to agree in advance, and the chauffeur confirms the exact spot on the day.
A day plan: Gatineau to Montréal by way of Montebello
This is a sample day for guests going east, using the 2026 season. Adjust the order to the tour times above.

- Morning, Gatineau or Ottawa. Depart around 9 am. Take Autoroute 50 east, about 70 km to the Montebello exit.
- Late morning. The tourist office and a walk on Notre-Dame, then chocolate or cheese.
- Noon to 1:30 pm. Lunch in the village, or at the hotel if it takes non-guests.
- 1:30 pm. English-language tour at Manoir Papineau (check the day's schedule).
- Mid-afternoon. Parc Oméga if time allows, otherwise the river road on Route 148 toward Montréal.
- Late afternoon. Continue to Montréal, about 135 km from the manor. Our Montréal limo service page covers hotels, and the Montréal airport YUL page covers the airport.
The day works with a Luxury SUV for up to six, or an Executive Sedan for up to three. Booked through our Toronto dispatch, the whole point-to-point trip is one fare, shown before you pay.
Montebello as a day trip from Montréal
The other direction works too. From central Montréal the manor is about 135 km, and a morning departure gets you there for a 1:30 tour and the village. Service in Québec is available in English and French, so a family with mixed languages can ask for either.
If you are staying in the Laurentians, the same afternoon can be shortened: our Saint-Sauveur and the Laurentians guide covers a different day from Montréal, and our Gatineau Park fall drive covers the other end of the same corridor.
Groups, families and accessibility
Parks Canada lists accessible services and a shuttle at the manor, and bus parking on site, and children 17 and under enter free. Child, toddler and booster seats are available when requested at booking. Groups of 12 to 14 can travel together in an Executive Sprinter; confirm vehicle access for Parc Oméga with dispatch first. For a longer private day with several stops, the hourly chauffeur page explains how time is planned.

Seasons: autumn, winter and the Manoir's calendar
Autumn is the sweet spot for the drive: river views, and Parc Oméga in rut season. Winter closes the manor to the public, so a winter trip is about the hotel, the village and the park. The tourist office stays open all year. Parks Canada also offers guided tours for school and private groups from May to October.
If your date falls after Thanksgiving Monday, the manor has finished its 2026 season; the park and village remain open. In 2026 the manor reopened in mid-May on weekends only, so a May trip works best on a Saturday or Sunday, and a mid-summer trip has the widest choice of days. The tourist office's all-year opening makes it a dependable first stop whatever the month, and its maps carry the current itineraries for the wider Outaouais if you want to extend the day east or west along the river.
Honest alternatives
| Option | Time from Gatineau | Cost note | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drive yourself | About an hour | Fuel and parking | Confident drivers who want to set their own stops |
| Rideshare or taxi | About an hour | Meter plus surge | A one-way hop; return rides in a small village are hard to arrange |
| Private chauffeur | About an hour | Fixed fare via booker | Groups, mixed ages and anyone who wants a return planned |

If you only have a short window, drive past. If you have a few hours and like heritage and animals, Montebello repays them.
