Is a day trip from Toronto to Buffalo realistic?

Yes. Buffalo is about 160 km from downtown Toronto, usually 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes each way before border waits. A shopping day or an evening game is realistic in one day, but a Sabres night ends late, and the Canadian same-day rule changes what you can bring home.

Torontonians have been driving to Buffalo for decades, for a mall run, a Sabres game, an airport flight or a restaurant dinner. The QEW carries you most of the way and the Peace Bridge hands you into the city.

What turns a pleasant idea into a bad day is almost always one of three things: arriving at the border without the right documents, choosing the wrong crossing at the wrong hour, or not knowing the rules for what you can bring home after a same-day trip. This guide is written from the curb. It covers the drive, the crossings, the paperwork, the two main Buffalo stops, and when your own car, an overnight stay or a chauffeur is the honest answer.

If you would rather leave the driving and the lane choice to someone else, our cross-border limo service runs this route, and the booker shows the exact fixed fare for your address before you pay.

What a Buffalo day looks like

Three kinds of day cover most trips.

Front view of the historic Elephant House at the Buffalo Zoo, a landmark of unique architecture
Front view of the historic Elephant House at the Buffalo Zoo, a landmark of unique architecture

The shopping day. Leave Toronto mid-morning, cross, spend the afternoon at Walden Galleria in the eastern suburbs, eat, cross back in the evening.

The game night. Leave Toronto mid-afternoon, park near KeyBank Center downtown, go to the game, and either drive home after midnight or stay overnight.

The city day. The Buffalo AKG Art Museum on Elmwood Avenue, a long lunch, the waterfront, and home before dark. Less common, and the least stressful.

A fourth option is the flight. Many Ontario travellers use Buffalo Niagara International as an alternative to Pearson. That is a different trip, covered in our Buffalo airport guide and the Toronto to Buffalo airport route.

The drive: Toronto to Buffalo on the QEW

From downtown Toronto the trip is about 160 km, and the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) is the whole route: Gardiner Expressway west, then the QEW around the western end of Lake Ontario past Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton, St. Catharines and Niagara Falls to Fort Erie, where the Peace Bridge crosses into Buffalo.

Typical timing: 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes before the border. That gap is the traffic. A mid-morning departure on a weekday gets the quick end; a Friday afternoon or a long-weekend Sunday gets the slow end, and the stretch between Mississauga and Burlington and the Burlington Skyway are the usual bottlenecks.

From Pearson: a Pearson pickup skips the downtown leg. See Pearson airport limo for terminal procedure.

From Niagara: if you are already at the Falls, the Rainbow Bridge is minutes away and the trip is short; see our Niagara Falls limo page and the Toronto to Niagara Falls route for the Canadian side.

Which crossing: Peace Bridge, Queenston-Lewiston or Rainbow

For a Buffalo destination, the Peace Bridge at Fort Erie is the natural choice. The Peace Bridge Authority lists the Canadian plaza at 100 Queen Street, Fort Erie, and the Buffalo plaza at 1 Peace Bridge Plaza. Tolls are collected only on Canada-bound traffic, all toll lanes are self-serve and cashless, and E-ZPass users get a 50% saving on the toll. The Peace Bridge site shows live lane counts and waits.

The alternatives are the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge, which is the nearer crossing if you are coming from the Niagara-on-the-Lake or wine-country side, and the Rainbow Bridge at Niagara Falls, which the CBSA lists as a travellers-only crossing. The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge is listed as NEXUS-only. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission operates the Niagara bridges, and its site shows current traffic conditions.

Wait times swing. On one evening in early October 2026, the Peace Bridge showed about an 18-minute wait for cars heading into the United States, with 3 of 12 lanes open, and no delay for Canada-bound cars. The CBSA's own page for returning travellers on the same date showed a one-minute wait at the Peace Bridge and no delay at the Rainbow Bridge. Those are snapshots, not promises. Check the CBSA border wait times page before you leave and again at the last gas stop before the plaza.

The practical rule: use the Peace Bridge for downtown Buffalo and the mall, unless the live numbers say a Niagara crossing is clearly quicker.

Documents: what to carry

Canada's travel advice for entering the United States by land is simple, and it is worth reading on the day. According to the Government of Canada, Canadian citizens aged 16 and older need a valid passport or a Trusted Traveler Program card such as NEXUS, valid for the whole stay. Citizens aged 15 and under need a passport, an original or copy of a birth certificate, or an original citizenship certificate. Canadians under 19 travelling with a school or other organized group under adult supervision need written parental consent.

The same advisory is blunt about the border: officers have wide discretion, expect scrutiny at ports of entry including of electronic devices, and they may ask about the purpose and length of the trip. Canadians visiting more than 30 days must register. For a day trip none of that is a problem if you are straightforward, but have the documents in hand before you reach the booth.

Read the current advice at travel.gc.ca. For a chauffeured trip, every passenger needs valid travel documents, and border wait time is part of the trip.

Coming home: the same-day rule that catches shoppers

This is the part many people discover at the booth. The CBSA says personal exemptions do not apply to same-day cross-border shoppers. If you are out of Canada for less than 24 hours, there is no personal exemption, and goods you bring back are subject to the duty and taxes that apply to them. Declare everything.

The tiers, as the CBSA's personal exemptions page states them:

  • Absent more than 24 hours: goods up to CAN$200; tobacco and alcohol are excluded.
  • Absent more than 48 hours: goods up to CAN$800, with alcohol and tobacco allowed within set limits.
  • Absent more than 7 days: goods up to CAN$800, with tobacco and alcohol with you and other goods allowed to follow.

Other CBSA rules to keep in mind: you cannot combine tiers or transfer your exemption to another person; you declare values in Canadian funds; and officers may ask to see receipts. For 48 hours or more, the alcohol limits are 1.5 litres of wine, 1.14 litres of spirits or 8.5 litres of beer, and the minimum age is 19 in Ontario.

Why does this matter for planning? Because the cleanest way to use any exemption is to stay overnight. A Sabres game with a hotel night, leaving Toronto in the afternoon and returning the next afternoon after 24 hours have passed, changes the customs position. A same-day mall run does not. We make no promises on duty or taxes; the CBSA decides, so read its page and declare honestly.

Walden Galleria: the shopping stop

Walden Galleria is at 1 Walden Galleria, Buffalo, NY 14225, in the eastern suburbs. The mall's own site says it has over 200 retail stores, with Macy's and JCPenney as anchors, and lists tenants including Apple, Sephora, Zara, H&M and Anthropologie, plus restaurants and an entertainment complex. Its published hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Holiday hours differ, so confirm on the Walden Galleria site before you go.

Plan the arrival around the mall's hours and the border. A rule of thumb: leave Toronto by 9:30 a.m. for a late-morning arrival, shop through the afternoon, and be on the road back by 6 p.m. for a 9 p.m. Toronto return in normal traffic. Sunday closes at 6 p.m., so a Sunday shopping trip is shorter than a Saturday one.

Buy with the exemption in mind. If your shopping list is large, the same-day rule suggests staying over or buying less. A chauffeur can take bags straight from the mall to the vehicle, but customs is the same either way.

A Sabres night at KeyBank Center

The Sabres play at KeyBank Center, One Seymour H. Knox III Plaza, Buffalo, NY 14203. The NHL regular season runs from October into April, and the arena's schedule was already listing early-October 2026 home games when we checked.

Suitcases ready for a trip
Suitcases ready for a trip

Parking. KeyBank Center lists three parking options: the KeyBank Center Parking Ramp, the LECOM Harborcenter Parking Ramp and KeyBank Center surface lots. All are cashless, and the arena strongly encourages pre-purchasing through JustPark, noting that lots can fill on event days and refunds are generally unavailable. Arrive early.

Bags. The arena prohibits all bags, backpacks and purses. Clutches and wristlets no larger than 4 by 6 by 1.5 inches are allowed and subject to visual inspection, with exceptions for medical items and diaper bags after screening. Leave bags in the car, which matters if you are carrying mall shopping from earlier in the day. Read the arena's visit information before you travel.

Drop-off and pickup. KeyBank Center does not publish a rideshare or limousine drop-off point on the pages we checked, so we will not invent one. The chauffeur confirms the exact spot with you. After the game, a pickup a couple of blocks from the arena doors, on a side street, is almost always quicker than idling in the post-game crush.

Timing. A late game finishes after 9:30 p.m. By the time you are out of the arena and through the Peace Bridge it can be well past midnight. A hotel night in Buffalo is the honest answer for many people, and it also changes the customs rules as described above. If you want to see another city sight nearby, see our Detroit and Windsor guide for a similar cross-border plan, and our sports and concerts page for how we handle event nights.

The city day: art, lunch and the waterfront

If neither a mall nor a game suits you, the Buffalo AKG Art Museum at 1285 Elmwood Avenue is the cultural anchor. The museum's site says it offers public tours daily from Thursday to Monday and has a restaurant, Cornelia, in the Knox Building. Check the museum's visit page for current hours and tickets, because the schedule is not the same every day.

A city day suits a slower start: leave Toronto around 9 a.m., cross at the Peace Bridge, and have lunch before the museum. It is the version of this trip with the least pressure, because no store is closing and no puck is dropping.

A sample plan

Shopping day.

  1. Leave Toronto about 9:30 a.m. for the 160 km run; allow up to 2 hours 30 minutes for the QEW.
  2. Cross the Peace Bridge around noon; allow extra time if the live wait is long.
  3. Shop at Walden Galleria from about 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  4. Eat before leaving, then depart Buffalo about 6 p.m.
  5. Cross back at the Peace Bridge, declare your purchases, and reach Toronto about 9 p.m.

Game night.

  1. Leave Toronto about 2:30 p.m., after the worst of the morning rush and before the evening one.
  2. Park or be dropped near the arena by 6 p.m. for a 7 p.m. start.
  3. After the game, decide honestly: drive back after midnight or sleep in Buffalo and cross in the morning.

If you want a sport-and-sights weekend rather than a day, our guide to Journey Behind the Falls and the Hornblower season covers the Niagara side of the same corridor.

Groups, families and accessibility

A hockey group of four to six is a Luxury SUV booking; larger groups use an Executive Sprinter for 12 to 14 passengers. See the fleet page for vehicle classes. Child, toddler and booster seats are available when requested at booking. Wheelchair accessibility at the arena and mall is for those venues to confirm, and the arena's website has an accessibility page. Every traveller in the vehicle, including children, needs valid travel documents.

Plainly: if you are one person who drives confidently and wants a quick Walden Galleria run, your own car is the better value. A chauffeur earns its place on a game night, with a group, or when you would rather not do the QEW twice in a day. The Peace Bridge's own E-ZPass discount applies only if you hold the tag.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Buffalo from Toronto?

About 160 km from downtown Toronto via the QEW and the Peace Bridge. Allow 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes before the border, depending on traffic. Border waits come on top; check live numbers before leaving.

Do I need a passport to go to Buffalo for the day?

Canadian citizens aged 16 and over need a valid passport or a Trusted Traveler card such as NEXUS to enter the United States by land, according to the Government of Canada. Younger children have lighter requirements. Check travel.gc.ca on the day.

What can I bring back after a same-day trip?

The CBSA says personal exemptions do not apply to same-day cross-border shoppers. Declare everything you bring back. Stays over 24 hours qualify for a CAN$200 exemption, and over 48 hours for CAN$800 with alcohol and tobacco limits.

Which border crossing is best for Buffalo?

The Peace Bridge at Fort Erie, for downtown Buffalo and the mall. The Queenston-Lewiston and Rainbow bridges are alternatives if live wait times favour them. The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge is NEXUS-only.

Can I take my bags into KeyBank Center?

No. The arena prohibits bags, backpacks and purses. Small clutches up to 4 by 6 by 1.5 inches are allowed, subject to inspection, with medical and diaper bag exceptions.

How late can I get home after a Sabres game?

After a 7 p.m. start you are usually out of the arena after 9:30 p.m., then at the border and on the QEW; arriving in Toronto around midnight or later is common. Many people stay overnight.

Do you provide child seats for the Buffalo trip?

Yes, when requested at booking. Tell us the ages of the children, and bring their documents.

Is a chauffeur better than driving myself?

For one confident driver on a quick mall run, probably not. For a game night, a group or a long shopping day, a chauffeur removes the parking, the driving and the lane choice. The booker shows the exact fare before you confirm.
