A Toronto to Quebec City car service is the longest standard run on the corridor, and it rewards planning more than any other route on this site. The road is simple: Highway 401 east, Autoroute 20 across Québec, then the bridge into the city. What takes thought is the length of the day. TorontoBlackLimousine.net books this trip through our Toronto dispatch, and the online booker shows the exact fare for your addresses before you pay.
How long is a Toronto to Quebec City car service trip?
Toronto to Québec City is about 790 km, roughly 8.5 to 9.5 hours of driving before stops. It is two known legs joined together: about 540 km to Montréal, then about 250 km on to Québec City. You see the exact fare for your addresses in the booker before you confirm.
Those two legs are the best way to understand the trip. Tourisme Montréal describes the 401 route from Toronto to Montréal as about five and a half hours of highway time, and Québec City's tourism office gives 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours for Montréal to Québec City on Highway 20. Add the two, then add the fuel stop, a meal and a margin for the Montréal Island, and a realistic door-to-door day is 10 to 11 hours.
That is a long time to be in a car, and the best trips treat it that way: a sensible departure time, a proper lunch and a clear idea of whether the destination is a meeting that evening or a hotel bed.
Is Toronto to Quebec City a one-day drive?
It is, and plenty of travellers do it. A 6 am departure from Toronto reaches Montréal around lunch, and the final 250 km lands in Québec City in the early evening. Reverse that and you have the return. The trade-off is that the whole day is spent travelling, and any delay on the 401 or in Montréal moves your arrival into the night.

The alternative is to split the journey. Many travellers leave Toronto in the afternoon, sleep in Montréal and complete the last 250 km the next morning, arriving fresh for a midday meeting. The Toronto to Montréal page describes the first leg in detail, and the Montréal to Québec City page the second. Montréal sits about two thirds of the way along, so the second day is the short one.
If your plans are fixed, say so at booking. If they are flexible, ask the dispatch desk which structure it would recommend for your dates.
The route: Highway 401, Autoroute 20 and the Pierre-Laporte Bridge
| Stage | Distance | Typical drive time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toronto to Kingston | about 260 km | 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours | GTA traffic, then open highway; lanes narrow after Cobourg |
| Kingston to Montréal | about 280 km | 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours 15 minutes | Follows the St. Lawrence; the 401 turns into Autoroute 20 at the Québec boundary |
| Montréal to Québec City | about 250 km | 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours | Autoroute 20 along the south shore |
| Whole trip | about 790 km | 8.5 to 9.5 hours | Before meal and fuel stops |
The highway numbering helps. The 401 becomes Autoroute 20 near Rivière-Beaudette, so for the first 540 km the driver follows one continuous road. In Montréal the route crosses the island and the St. Lawrence by way of the Turcot Interchange and the Samuel-de-Champlain Bridge, where Autoroute 20 briefly shares pavement with Autoroute 15. It then runs down the south shore, bypassing Saint-Hyacinthe and sharing a 37 km stretch with Autoroute 55 around Drummondville.
Autoroute 20 never enters Québec City itself. At kilometre 312 it meets Autoroute 73, which leads over the Pierre-Laporte Bridge into the city from the south shore. Your chauffeur takes the exit that suits your destination, whether that is Old Québec, a hotel or the train station.
Two ways to approach Québec City: south shore or north shore
From Montréal, the south-shore Autoroute 20 is the faster, more direct choice, according to the city's tourism office, and it is the default for a Toronto departure because the driver is already on it. Autoroute 40 runs the other side of the river, through Repentigny, Berthierville, Louiseville and Trois-Rivières, and reaches Québec City from the north. It carries more small towns and more reasons to stop.

The scenic version of the north shore is Route 138, the Chemin du Roy, which the tourism office describes as the oldest road in the province, passing through villages such as Cap-Santé. It is slow, and a day that already runs nine hours is rarely the day for it. If you want to see Trois-Rivières or the Chemin du Roy, split the trip and treat the second day as the sightseeing day. See the Trois-Rivières limo page.
Planning a very long day: breaks, timing and the two-driver question
On a 790 km day, rest is part of the plan. A trip like this should include a proper meal and at least two comfort breaks, and the ONroute plazas on the Ontario stretch are the easiest ones to use. The official ONroute locations page lists them east of Toronto, from Port Hope on the eastbound side to Bainsville near the Québec line on the westbound side.
Some clients ask whether a trip this long can be run with two drivers. We do not want to promise something that depends on the date and the vehicle, so the honest answer is: ask the dispatch desk before you book. If the schedule needs a particular arrangement, such as a night drive, a very early start or a firm arrival time, the desk will tell you what can be done and which options are not sensible.
For most travellers the best answer is a split trip, which is also the safer one for anyone who must be sharp at the other end.
Overnight in Montréal, Kingston or Trois-Rivières
Montréal is the natural stopover. It has the hotel choice, the restaurants and the exit to Québec City on the other side. An evening arrival (see the Montréal limo page) puts you within a morning's drive of a midday Québec City meeting.

Kingston, about 260 km from Toronto in 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours, is the better choice for those who want a gentler first day. See the Toronto to Kingston page. Trois-Rivières, on the Autoroute 40 side, is a quieter alternative if you want to stay between Montréal and Québec City; the Trois-Rivières page has more. Tell us the stopover at booking and we will plan the legs around it.

- Executive Sedan: up to three travellers and 2 large plus 2 carry-on bags. Good for one or two people who want to work en route.
- Luxury SUV: a party of up to six with 5 to 6 large bags, which is the roomy choice for families and small teams over nine hours.
- Executive Sprinter: 12 to 14 people and 12 or more bags, for groups and delegations making the full run.

Toronto to Québec City by VIA Rail, flight, coach and car

| Option | Typical time | Cost note | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private car service (this page) | 8.5 to 9.5 hours of driving, 10 to 11 door to door | Fixed fare via the booker | Groups, luggage, a split trip, awkward addresses |
| VIA Rail via Montréal | The published legs are about 5 hours 13 minutes and 3 hours 26 minutes on average, plus the time between trains | Varies by fare class and date | Solo travellers who do not mind changing trains |
| Flight | Check the airline schedule; add airport time at both ends | Varies by airline and date | A single traveller with a short window |
| Coach via Montréal | Longest of the options | Lowest fare | One bag and plenty of time |
| Rental car, one way | 8.5 to 9.5 hours of driving | Plus return logistics | Travellers who want to drive |
| Rideshare or taxi | Not designed for 790 km | Meter or app pricing | City trips only |
VIA lists Toronto to Montréal at 538 km and an average of 5 hours 13 minutes on its Toronto to Montréal page, and Montréal to Québec at 270 km and an average of 3 hours 26 minutes, both as of October 2026. Ask VIA whether a single through-train exists for your date before relying on one. Québec City airport lists its airlines and destinations at aeroportdequebec.com, and flight schedules between the two cities change with the season, so check them.
When a lone traveller can use the train or a flight, one of those is often the lower-cost choice and we would say so. The car is the right answer when luggage, a group, a meeting schedule or a door-to-door address matters more than the lowest fare. See also the limo versus rideshare page.
Pickup in Toronto
- Downtown hotels and offices. The earlier you leave the GTA, the more of the day you save on the 401.
- Toronto Pearson. The airport is about 27 km from Union Station, 30 to 50 minutes in normal traffic. Travellers landing from overseas sometimes ask for a terminal pickup so they can be on the road to Québec the same day; see the Pearson airport limo page. Flights are tracked on every airport pickup, and the complimentary wait is 60 minutes for international arrivals and 30 for domestic.
- Union Station. VIA's station at 65 Front Street West is one option; see the Union Station page.
- Anywhere in the 905. We collect from home addresses across the GTA.
For general Toronto service see the limo service Toronto page.
Arriving in Québec City: Old Québec, Gare du Palais and the airport
Old Québec is a walled district of narrow streets above the St. Lawrence, and the last kilometre to a hotel door is often the slowest of the day. Give us the exact destination and any access instructions at booking so the chauffeur can plan the final approach.
For rail passengers, VIA lists the station at 450 rue de la Gare du Palais, staffed with an agent present even if a train arrives after the ticket counter closes, with a restaurant, Wi-Fi in the station and connections to taxis and city buses. See our Gare du Palais page. For the airport, see the Québec City airport page, and for the city itself the Québec City limo page.
Driving into French-speaking Québec
Signs, exits and parking restrictions are in French from the border onward. We provide service in English and French in Québec, so the chauffeur can talk you through the final approach in the language you prefer. Distances and speeds are in kilometres on both sides of the line, and Ontario and Québec share Eastern Time.
Winter driving between Toronto and Québec City
Winter turns a long day into a longer one, and 790 km gives weather plenty of room to change. Ontario 511 shows road conditions, more than 900 cameras and a 12-hour driving forecast. In Québec, the SAAQ requires winter tires from December 1 to March 15 on vehicles registered in Québec, as set out on the SAAQ winter preparation page. The page does not address vehicles registered elsewhere, so confirm tire specifics with the dispatch desk, which is staffed 24/7.
In winter we recommend the split trip. Arriving in Montréal in the afternoon and finishing in the morning avoids a night drive in poor conditions.
Corporate, conference and group travel to Québec City
Québec City is the provincial capital, and trips there often involve government, a conference or a group meeting. A private car lets a team travel together, prepare on the way and arrive at the same door. The corporate car service page covers regular programmes, and the travel desk helps with itinerary planning for longer trips.
Beyond Québec City
Many guests continue past Québec City. The Charlevoix limo page covers the road toward Baie-Saint-Paul and La Malbaie, and the Québec hub lists the other destinations across the province. Everything on the corridor is gathered on the routes hub.
Booking and cancellation
The booker takes your two addresses, the date, the time and the vehicle, then shows the exact all-in fare before you pay. A 790 km trip varies with address, vehicle, date and whether you split it, which is why no fare is printed on this page.
Notice is counted from the scheduled pickup. Cancel with more than 72 hours to go and nothing is charged; within 72 hours the charge is 10%, within 48 hours it is 50%, and within 24 hours, or for a no-show, it is 100%. Read about the service on the about page.
