Montréal does New Year's Eve outdoors, in the cold, with a crowd. The big public party sits in the Old Port, a handful of minutes from Old Montréal's hotels and restaurants, and it ends at 2 a.m. in the dead of winter. That combination, a very late finish, a very large crowd and a metro that everybody is trying to use at the same moment, is the reason a pre-booked Montréal limo makes sense for many visitors. This guide is written from the curb. It covers what the organizers and the STM have published, where cars can and cannot work, and how to get here from Toronto, Pearson or the airport.

What is the best way to get to the Old Port on New Year's Eve?

For the Old Port party at Quai Jacques-Cartier, use the metro to Champ-de-Mars or Berri-UQAM if you are comfortable with crowds, or pre-book a chauffeur to a side-street pickup. In the most recent edition doors opened at 7:30 p.m., fireworks marked midnight, and the event ended at 2 a.m.

The metro is the right choice for many people and we say so below. A chauffeur is the right choice when you are dressed for dinner, travelling with family, staying outside the downtown core, or simply want a fixed meeting point after a long night in the cold. The remainder of this guide covers both so that you can decide on facts rather than hope.

Le Grand Minuit de Montréal: what the Old Port plan looks like

For the New Year that arrived on January 1, 2026, the Old Port of Montréal hosted Le Grand Minuit de Montréal. According to the Old Port's event page, doors opened at 7:30 p.m. on December 31 with a DJ set by the Tupi Collective, followed by a 9 p.m. set by Qualité Motel and a 10:30 p.m. medley with Patrick Watson, Kloô Pelgag, Boogàt and others. At midnight came fireworks and a collective countdown, then more music until 2 a.m. Admission was free and open to everyone.

The official event site, grandminuit.ca, gives the location as Quai Jacques-Cartier in the Vieux-Port de Montréal. A VIP experience with heated areas was offered separately; we do not quote any ticket price. For the Old Port's own schedule and program, see the Old Port of Montréal event page.

Exact dates, acts and rules change each year. As we write this in October 2026 we have not seen a programme for December 31, 2026, so treat the details above as the most recent pattern and confirm the current year on the official sites in December.

Montréal limo service on December 31: book early

Everyone who wants a car at 1 a.m. wants it at the same moment, and the chauffeurs already assigned are the only ones available. Book as early as your plans allow, ideally weeks ahead. Our Montréal service is booked through our Toronto dispatch, with licensed, commercially insured vehicles and chauffeurs, 24/7 dispatch, and service in English and French in Quebec.

Choose the vehicle by group size. An Executive Sedan takes up to three passengers, a Luxury SUV up to six, and an Executive Sprinter twelve to fourteen. Stretch limousines and party buses are booked by the hour; availability and the exact vehicle are confirmed at booking. The booker shows the exact all-in fare for your address and vehicle before you pay, so there is no surge on the night. See our Montréal limo service page and the fleet for classes.

Cancellation is measured from the scheduled pickup time: more than 72 hours' notice carries no charge; 72 hours or less is 10 percent; 48 hours or less is 50 percent; 24 hours or less or a no-show is 100 percent.

Streets and crowds around the Old Port

The Old Port's event page says the SPVM, the Montréal police, closed streets to traffic from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on December 31 depending on how many people were in the area, and a travel guide is linked from the event pages. The Old Port page and the official site do not publish a limousine or rideshare drop-off zone, and the official site says nothing about parking or road routes, so we do not pretend to know one. The practical rule is the same as at any large urban event: do not ask a car to reach the quay itself.

Old Montréal's streets are narrow and in places cobbled, and on a crowded night a car cannot turn around easily. The reliable method is for the chauffeur to meet you on a side street or at a hotel entrance a few blocks away from the quay, and for you to walk the final stretch. We confirm the exact meeting point after you book, based on the closures published for that year. Choose a landmark you can both find, such as a hotel lobby or a named restaurant, and share the exact pickup time.

The metro: extended hours and the nearest stations

The official site names the stations closest to the event. Champ-de-Mars on the orange line (line 2) and Berri-UQAM on lines 1, 2 and 4 are near the site. Champ-de-Mars has an elevator; Berri-UQAM does not have one for line 4, the yellow line, and elevator status is listed on the STM's website.

On the night, the STM extended service by about two hours on lines 1, 2 and 4, according to the event site, while line 5, the blue line, ended at its regular time. Last-train times differ by station, so check the STM timetable for your own stop. The event site also suggested the STM's Soirée illimitée fare for zones A to D, and buying your return fare on the way in so that you avoid queues at the machines afterwards. For travellers heading to Laval or Longueuil, in fare zone B, it suggested the all-modes AB fare. We do not quote prices for these fares; see the STM for current terms.

The honest advice: the metro is usually the faster way home from the Old Port in the first hour after midnight, because the closed streets slow every car. It is also the most crowded. If you expect to travel with a stroller, with a grandparent, in formal clothes or from an address outside the metro network, a chauffeur is a better fit.

Where a car can wait near the Old Port

A car works best when the pickup is outside the busiest few blocks. Options that work in practice include a hotel in Old Montréal or downtown, a restaurant a few streets inland, or a meeting point on the far side of the metro stations from the quay. The chauffeur then drives you home or to your hotel without having to enter the closure zone.

For a late exit, many groups hold the car for an hour after the fireworks and leave when the first crowd has cleared. A booking by the hour suits this: see our hourly chauffeur service and our night out limo page for multi-stop evenings.

From Montréal-Trudeau (YUL) on the day

Many visitors fly in on December 30 or 31. Montréal-Trudeau is about 20 km from downtown, around 20 minutes by road in light traffic, and longer on a busy evening. The STM's 747 airport bus is a genuine lower-cost alternative, but it makes several stops on the long downtown route, so it is a longer ride with luggage than the drive.

A chauffeur meets you at arrivals, tracks your flight and waits: 60 minutes free after landing on international arrivals and 30 minutes on domestic. A name-board meet-and-greet inside arrivals is available as an add-on. At the time of writing, the REM airport branch is not open and no official date has been announced for its opening, so do not plan around it. See our YUL airport guide for the full arrival procedure.

Toronto to Montréal for the night

Some travellers drive from Toronto for the weekend. The route is about 540 km, roughly 5.5 to 6.5 hours via Highway 401, with the midpoint at Kingston. We do not recommend doing the whole journey on the afternoon of December 31 and then standing outside in the cold at midnight; arriving the day before is calmer. Our Toronto to Montréal car service page covers the trip, the stops and the alternatives.

If the plan is to see the fireworks and return the same night, remember that you would be on the road around 540 km at 2 a.m. in winter; most travellers stay overnight at a hotel and drive home the next day, or take VIA from Toronto and use a local chauffeur in Montréal. The Montréal Central Station page explains the pickup arrangements for rail arrivals.

Cold, snow and winter tires

Québec law requires winter tires on vehicles registered in Québec from December 1 to March 15 inclusive, according to the Québec government and the SAAQ; vehicles registered outside Québec are outside the requirement. That is a legal point only: a private car from Ontario on a January night in Québec faces the same conditions as everyone else, and winter tires are a very good idea. Check the Québec winter tire rules if you are driving yourself. A chauffeur handles the driving, so you only need to think about the walk.

Dress for a long wait outdoors. The Old Port is on the river, and wind off the St. Lawrence makes the temperature feel colder than the forecast. Schedule the car for the end of the night so that it is warm when you reach it.

Groups, families and accessibility

The event site states there is no area reserved for people with reduced mobility, but accessible toilets are available. If someone in your group uses a wheelchair or walker, tell us at booking so that the pickup point is as close as the closures allow. At the VIP area, the site says children 12 and under enter free if they have ID and are accompanied by an adult with a VIP ticket, and no alcohol is served to anyone under 18. Alcohol rules for our vehicles follow Québec law and are confirmed at booking; we never promise drinks on board.

Child, toddler and booster seats are available on request when you book; tell the booker the ages and seat types. For larger groups, a Luxury SUV carries up to six and an Executive Sprinter twelve to fourteen.

The lower-cost option wins when you are close to the metro and happy to queue. A chauffeur wins when you want certainty at 2 a.m. For more holiday planning, read our New Year's Eve in Toronto guide and the plan for the Fête nationale du Québec. Frequently asked questions

Where is the Old Port New Year's Eve party in Montréal?

In the most recent edition, Le Grand Minuit de Montréal was held at Quai Jacques-Cartier in the Old Port of Montréal. Doors opened at 7:30 p.m., fireworks and a countdown marked midnight, and the event finished at 2 a.m. Admission was free. Confirm the current year on grandminuit.ca.

Does the metro run late on New Year's Eve in Montréal?

In the most recent edition, the STM extended service by about two hours on lines 1, 2 and 4, while line 5 ended at its regular time. Last trains vary by station, so check the STM timetable for your own stop before you head out.

Which metro stations are closest to the Old Port event?

Champ-de-Mars on the orange line and Berri-UQAM on lines 1, 2 and 4 are the stations the official site names. Champ-de-Mars has an elevator; Berri-UQAM does not for line 4. Check the STM site for current elevator status.

Where will my chauffeur pick me up near the Old Port?

The organizers do not publish a limousine drop-off zone, so the chauffeur confirms the exact spot with you after booking, based on the closures for that year. Expect a side street or hotel entrance a few blocks from the quay rather than the waterfront itself.

How far is Montréal-Trudeau from downtown?

About 20 km, around 20 minutes in light traffic and longer on busy evenings. The booker shows the exact fare for your address and vehicle before you confirm. Flight tracking is included, with 60 minutes of free waiting after international arrivals and 30 for domestic.

Can I book a Montréal limo with English-speaking service?

Yes. Service is provided in English and French in Quebec. Tell the booker your preference and the chauffeur will be briefed accordingly.

Is the REM airport line open for New Year's Eve?

No. The REM airport branch is not open and no official date has been announced, so plan the airport trip by road, by the STM 747 bus, or with a pre-booked chauffeur.

Do I need winter tires if I drive to Montréal from Ontario?

Québec's winter tire requirement, from December 1 to March 15, applies to vehicles registered in Québec; vehicles registered elsewhere are outside it. Winter tires are still advisable in January. A chauffeur booking avoids the question entirely.
