Christmas Week Airport Runs in Toronto: Pearson, Billy Bishop and Buffalo

December airport trips fail on small details: the wrong terminal, a closed curb, a border queue, a snow squall on the 401. This is a curb-level plan for Pearson, Billy Bishop and Buffalo.

The week of Christmas is the one time of year when the airport run is the hardest part of the holiday. Families are carrying more luggage than usual, gifts are in the boot, children are tired, and the weather is not on your side. A chauffeur does not change the weather, but a booked airport limo in Toronto removes the three variables you can control: the wait at the curb, the parking question and the drive itself.

This guide is written from the curb. It covers three airports that Toronto travellers actually use in December, Toronto Pearson, Billy Bishop and Buffalo Niagara, with distances, what the curb rules are, how the border fits in, and when UP Express or a train is the better answer than a car. It is also useful if you never book with us.

Pearson, Billy Bishop or Buffalo: which airport for a Christmas flight?

Pearson is the default: the most flights, two terminals and about 27 km from Union Station. Billy Bishop is closest to downtown, with a tunnel and a ferry, but it serves fewer routes. Buffalo is about 160 km away and means a border crossing, yet it can suit families who find better flights or schedules there.

Choose the airport that matches your ticket, not your preference. If you hold a ticket from Pearson, nothing in this guide changes that. If you are choosing between airports, the three have different characters in December:

The Christmas calendar for 2026

In Ontario, Christmas Day and Boxing Day are public holidays. The province's own list includes both, alongside New Year's Day, and you can check it at ontario.ca. In 2026, Christmas Eve is a Thursday, Christmas Day is a Friday and Boxing Day is a Saturday. That produces a particular rhythm for airport traffic:

  • The days before Christmas Eve. Airports have traditionally been busiest in the stretch before Christmas, as people who work through the week fly out as soon as they can. Expect Pearson's departures curbs to be at their fullest in the afternoon and evening, so plan to arrive at the airport earlier than a usual trip.
  • Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The roads are quiet and the airport is not. Arrivals from the family-visit rush are still landing, so the airport is not empty, and you should check that any connecting transit is running.
  • Boxing Day and the week after. Return travel builds again. Weekend-style and holiday timetables apply on many transit services, and the airport roads are busy with people returning and with travellers leaving for winter trips.

Whatever your date, give your dispatcher the flight number. We track every airport pickup against the live flight, so a delayed landing moves the pickup, not the other way round.

Pearson in December: the 27 km run and the curb

From Union Station to Pearson is about 27 km and usually takes 30 to 50 minutes. The range is wide in December because the 427, the 401 and the Gardiner can all be affected by the same snowfall. A Mississauga or Brampton pickup is shorter, but the principle is the same: pick the departure time by working backwards from the check-in time your airline recommends, then add a December buffer.

A few practical points for the departures curb:

  1. Know your terminal before the car arrives. Pearson has Terminal 1 and Terminal 3, and your airline's page names yours. Going to the wrong one costs time even with a transfer between terminals.
  2. Load luggage at the car, not at the door. A Luxury SUV takes up to six passengers and five to six large bags. A family with four suitcases and a stroller should not be in a sedan, which takes up to three passengers and two large bags plus two carry-ons.
  3. Keep the pace calm. Children and grandparents are slower than the clock suggests, so build that time into the departure.
  4. Have documents in the front pocket. Passports and boarding passes should not be in the checked bag.

Our fleet page lists each vehicle class, and the booker assigns the right one when you enter passengers and bags.

Arrivals at Pearson: flight tracking, waiting time and meet-and-greet

On arrivals, the chauffeur works from your flight. We include 60 minutes of free waiting after landing on international arrivals and 30 minutes on domestic arrivals. In December, those minutes matter, because customs queues, baggage delays and de-icing hold-ups on the ground are more common.

For a first-time visitor, an elderly parent or a family with several children, a name-board meet-and-greet inside arrivals can be added to the booking. Our meet and greet page explains the service. Without it, the chauffeur agrees the pickup point with you.

If you are travelling with infants or toddlers, request child, toddler or booster seats when you book. See the car seat limo page. Seats are available when requested at booking, so do not leave this to the day.

Billy Bishop: the tunnel, the ferry and the curb

Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is at 2 Eireann Quay, at the foot of Bathurst Street. The airport lists its operating hours as 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. daily on its home page (billybishopairport.com). Reaching the terminal is different from any other Toronto airport, because the terminal is on the island side of the Western Gap, and there are two ways across:

  • The pedestrian tunnel. It is 853 feet long, with four moving walkways and six elevators at the mainland pavilion. The airport says the walk takes less than six minutes from the curb to check-in (tunnel details).
  • The ferry. It crosses the 121-metre Western Gap in about 90 seconds, leaves every 15 minutes, and is free for pedestrians. The ferry runs from 5:15 a.m. to 12:07 a.m. daily, but times can change with weather or capacity (ferry details).

Because the tunnel does not need a boarding time, it is the sensible default with luggage and children. Both depend on the same mainland curb.

What the curb allows

The airport's own rules for drop-off and pick-up are specific. You may stop briefly at the curb outside the mainland pavilion and ferry terminal. The free spots inside the turning circle are limited to a maximum five-minute wait, and the airport asks that drivers use them only after the passenger has confirmed they are arriving. The curb is a no-parking area reserved for loading and unloading. Taxis wait in a corral to the right of the mainland pavilion, and rideshare vehicles use a separate lane next to Little Norway Park (pick-up and drop-off rules). The airport's page does not list limousines or pre-arranged cars separately, so we plan to the general rule: short, active loading only. Your chauffeur will give you the exact spot, and may use a nearby side street for a longer wait.

The distance from Union Station is short, roughly 3 km and about 10 minutes on a clear day, but the final approach on Bathurst and Queens Quay can be slow, so allow extra. From Pearson to Billy Bishop is about 25 km, usually 30 to 50 minutes, longer in snow.

Billy Bishop's free shuttle

The airport runs a complimentary shuttle between the terminal and Union Station. The airport says the trip takes about 15 minutes, with departures about every 15 minutes, and the downtown drop-off is at the Fairmont Royal York on York Street (shuttle details). If you are already downtown with light luggage, it is a good option. With four bags and a stroller, a car is easier.

Buffalo for Christmas flights: the 160 km run

Some Toronto travellers fly from Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) at 4200 Genesee Street, because a flight, a schedule or a routing suits them better. The airport's own website sets out parking and transportation, including a section for limousines and one for Canadian ground transportation (buffaloairport.com).

The run from Toronto is about 160 km via the QEW and a border bridge, usually 1.75 to 2.5 hours of driving plus the crossing. That plan changes in December in three ways:

  1. The border is part of the trip. Leave extra time for the Canadian exit and the U.S. entry. A chauffeur can't speed up a queue.
  2. Winter weather is lake-effect. The QEW and the roads around Niagara can change quickly. Be willing to leave earlier than your friends think is necessary.
  3. The return needs a plan too. If you fly back into Buffalo on the 27th or 28th, your Canadian entry is at the bridge, not at the airport. Allow for that in the pickup time.

Which crossing

Three bridges serve the Buffalo run. The Peace Bridge links Fort Erie with Buffalo and is the one most travellers use for the airport. The Queenston–Lewiston Bridge and the Rainbow Bridge, which is for travellers only, are the alternatives through Niagara. The Canada Border Services Agency publishes estimated wait times for all three on one page (CBSA border wait times), and the bridge operator publishes lane-by-lane wait times, including NEXUS lanes (peacebridge.com). Your chauffeur will choose the crossing from the live numbers, and you can check them yourself the evening before.

Documents

For Canadian citizens crossing the land border by car, U.S. Customs and Border Protection lists a valid passport, an Enhanced Driver's Licence or a Trusted Traveler card such as NEXUS. Canadian children under 16 need proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate (cbp.gov). Check the rules for your own situation, because they differ for permanent residents and other nationalities, and carry your passport anyway for the flight. Our cross-border limo page covers the process.

Family trips: gifts, bags and children

Christmas travel adds luggage that a normal trip doesn't have. A short list of what to tell the booker:

  • The number of large bags and the shape of the oddities, such as a wrapped box, a hockey bag or a folded stroller. They decide the vehicle.
  • The ages of children, so the right seat is fitted.
  • Whether anyone needs help with mobility, so the pickup point is as close as the curb allows.

A group of seven to fourteen with luggage fits the Executive Sprinter (12 to 14 passengers, 12 or more bags). Larger family gatherings can ask about a stretch limousine (8 to 10 passengers, hourly) or a mini-coach, but availability and the exact vehicle are confirmed at booking.

Weather: snow, freezing rain and de-icing

December weather in southern Ontario is a spread of outcomes: a clear cold day, a lake-effect snow squall, freezing rain on the 401. None of it is a reason not to go. It is a reason to plan:

  • Leave earlier than the distance suggests. The 27 km run to Pearson is a 30 to 50 minute run in normal conditions. Add time when snow is forecast.
  • Expect delays on the airline side. De-icing and ramp delays push departures, and arrivals queue on the taxiways. Flight tracking covers the arrival; for a departure, check your airline's app before you leave.

Honest alternatives: UP Express, transit, taxi and driving yourself

A car is not always the best answer. For a solo traveller with one bag, the train is often the best choice to Pearson.

When to book and what to include

Book early for Christmas week. Booked vehicles are matched to flights and luggage, and the weeks around the holiday fill first. Include:

  • The pickup address, terminal and flight number (for arrivals).
  • The number of passengers, bags and child seats.
  • Any stop on the way, such as a relative's home.
  • A second contact for the group.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Pearson from downtown Toronto?

Union Station to Pearson is about 27 km, usually 30 to 50 minutes depending on traffic and weather. In Christmas week and in snow, allow more. The online booker shows the exact fare for your address and vehicle before you confirm.

Can a limo go to Billy Bishop airport?

Yes, to the mainland curb at the foot of Bathurst Street. The airport limits curb waits to a few minutes and reserves the curb for active loading, so the chauffeur plans a short stop. From there you walk through the tunnel or take the free ferry.

Is it a good idea to fly from Buffalo at Christmas?

It can be, if a flight or schedule suits you, but it adds about 160 km each way, a border crossing and lake-effect weather. Allow the time, check wait times the night before, and carry your passport.

What documents do I need to cross to Buffalo?

For Canadian citizens crossing by land, U.S. Customs and Border Protection lists a valid passport, an Enhanced Driver's Licence or a Trusted Traveler card such as NEXUS. Carry your passport for the flight as well, and check the rules if you are not a Canadian citizen.

Do you track my flight on Christmas Day?

Yes. Flight tracking is included on every airport pickup, including holidays. On international arrivals we include 60 minutes of free waiting after landing, and on domestic arrivals 30 minutes.

Can I book a child seat for the airport run?

Yes. Child, toddler and booster seats are available when requested at booking. Tell the booker the age and size of each child so the right seat is fitted.

Are Christmas Day and Boxing Day public holidays in Ontario?

Yes. Ontario's list of public holidays includes Christmas Day and Boxing Day (December 26). Transit and many services run on holiday timetables, so check them before depending on them.

What is the cancellation policy?

More than 72 hours' notice: no charge. 72 hours or less: 10%. 48 hours or less: 50%. 24 hours or less or no-show: 100%, measured from the scheduled pickup time.

Is UP Express better than a car?

For one or two people with light luggage travelling from downtown, UP Express is hard to beat: about 28 minutes. For families, groups, heavy luggage or early and late flights, a chauffeur is easier.
