What you can do in one Ottawa day
Downtown Ottawa is compact, and the three things most visitors come for sit close together. Parliament Hill is the federal seat of government, with its lawns, towers and views over the Ottawa River. The Rideau Canal runs beside it, a UNESCO World Heritage waterway that becomes a skating route in winter. A few blocks east is the ByWard Market, a heritage district of food stalls, restaurants and shops.
A good Ottawa day uses a car at the edges and your feet in the middle. You arrive by road or rail, you move once or twice between districts, and you walk the rest. The mistake is to treat downtown Ottawa as a place for driving from one attraction to the next; the blocks are short, the traffic near the Hill is slow, and most of what you want to see is within a ten-minute walk of the next thing.
This guide is written from the curb: how far Ottawa is from Toronto, what is open on Parliament Hill right now, when the market runs, and the honest alternatives to a private car. For the city in general see our Ottawa limo and car service page, and for planning a longer visit see private city tours.
How far is Ottawa from Toronto, and how long does the drive take?

Toronto to Ottawa is about 450 km by road, usually 4.5 hours in good conditions via Highway 401 and Highway 416, longer in Friday evening or winter traffic. The route enters downtown Ottawa from the south. TorontoBlackLimousine.net quotes a fixed fare before you book.
The quickest route is Highway 401 east to Highway 416 north, then into Ottawa. Route planners put the trip at about 4 hours 20 minutes to 4.5 hours when roads are clear. Winter weather and the Greater Toronto Area rush hour can add considerable time, so the sensible time to leave Toronto is mid-morning or before 7 a.m.
Our full Toronto to Ottawa route page covers the stops worth making and the corridor in detail. If you arrive by air, Ottawa's airport is roughly 12 km from downtown, usually 15 to 25 minutes by road; our Ottawa airport page covers pickups. If you arrive by train, VIA Rail's Ottawa station is at 200 Tremblay Road, about 4 km from downtown, and our Ottawa station page explains the pickup.
The booker shows the exact all-in fare for your address and vehicle before you confirm.
Parliament Hill: what is open and what is not
The most important fact for any visit: Centre Block, the building with the Peace Tower, is closed for rehabilitation. Ottawa Tourism notes that Centre Block and the Parliament Welcome Centre are targeted for completion in 2030 or 2031, so the central building will not reopen in the near term.
That has reshaped the tours. Ottawa Tourism lists the following as of 2026:
- House of Commons in West Block. Free guided tours of the refurbished building that now houses the House. The tour starts at the underground Visitor Welcome Centre between West Block and Centre Block, which also houses the Parliamentary Boutique.
- Senate of Canada Building. Free guided tours of the Beaux-Arts building that was built in 1912 as Ottawa's train station. It sits at 2 Rideau Street, between the Château Laurier and the National Arts Centre.
- East Block. In summer, free tours of four heritage rooms showing nineteenth-century Parliament life.
You can reserve tickets online, and some may be available first-come at the door. Tours depend on parliamentary activity and all visitors pass airport-style security screening. Arrive early so screening does not eat into your tour time.
A detail that surprises people: because the Senate building is a short walk from the Hill rather than on it, you can combine the two in a single morning without a car.
The Changing of the Guard
The Changing of the Guard is a free ceremony on Parliament Hill in which soldiers in red tunics and bearskin hats perform drills to military music. According to Ottawa Tourism's Changing of the Guard page, it begins daily at 10 a.m. in season, with the full parade on some days and the band on others.

The format has changed in recent years and the page currently lists future summer dates as to be announced, so check it before planning a morning around the parade. Exact dates change each year. If the ceremony is running, 10 a.m. is also when the Hill is at its most crowded, so drop-off earlier on a side street or walk from your hotel.
The ByWard Market: what runs when
The ByWard Market is one of Canada's oldest and largest public markets, established in 1827 according to the market's own site. It covers more than 500 businesses, which is why a single visit rarely sees all of it.
Know the schedule:
- Heritage Hall, the indoor market at 55 ByWard Market Square, is open year-round, with hours that vary by season.
- The outdoor public market on York Street and the Vendor Village on George Street run Wednesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., May to October and on holidays.
- The ByWard Winter Market runs from November to early January.
- Public washrooms are open from 5 a.m. to midnight.
Hours vary and individual businesses set their own, so check before you go. The outdoor stalls are the main reason to go from May to October; in winter the interest shifts to restaurants and the winter market.
Where a car can and cannot stop downtown
The honest answer is that the Hill and the Market are hard places to leave a car. Wellington Street runs along the front of Parliament Hill, and the area around the Market has narrow streets, delivery bays and heavy foot traffic. Parking is scarce at lunch and on weekends.

The practical approach is to drop and go. Your chauffeur can stop at a convenient corner, you walk to the entrance, and the car returns when you call. For the Hill, a quiet meeting point a block away is easier than the main entrance. For the Market, York Street or George Street are the active frontage, so a side street on the quieter edge often works better for the pickup.
For a precise spot we ask the chauffeur to confirm on the day, because closures and event setups change by hour. If you have limited mobility, tell us at booking and we will plan a stop as close to your entrance as the street allows.
The Rideau Canal, in summer and winter
The Rideau Canal National Historic Site runs 202 km from Ottawa to Kingston with 22 lockstations. Parks Canada describes it as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and says navigation runs roughly from Victoria Day to Thanksgiving. In summer you can watch boats lock through in the heart of the city.
In winter the canal becomes the Rideau Canal Skateway, which the National Capital Commission describes as 7.8 km long, usually open from January to early March depending on the weather, and free, 24 hours a day when open. If your trip is a winter one, our Winterlude weekend guide covers the festival side, and the Canadian Tulip Festival guide covers May.
The canal is the best reason to walk between the Hill and the Market rather than drive.
A suggested Ottawa day
A day that fits the map:

- 9:00 a.m. Arrive by road or rail. Coffee near the Market if you are early.
- 10:00 a.m. Changing of the Guard if it is running, otherwise a reserved tour at West Block or the Senate building.
- 11:30 a.m. Walk the canal side of the Hill and look at the locks.
- 12:30 p.m. Lunch in the Market. From May to October the outdoor stalls are open from 11 a.m.
- 2:30 p.m. Cross the river to Gatineau for the Canadian Museum of History, which faces the Hill from the Québec side. Our museum guide covers the crossing and the timing.
- 5:00 p.m. Return to your hotel or to the highway.
You can reverse the order if the weather is cold. The Market's indoor hall and the museum are warm refuges.
Getting around without a car
Ottawa's rail line, the O-Train, serves downtown with a Parliament station near the Hill, and Line 1 also reaches Tremblay station beside VIA Rail's Ottawa station, according to OC Transpo's published station information. A transit day is entirely realistic: arrive at the station, ride downtown, and walk everything else.
That is why we say plainly that a private car is a convenience, not a necessity, inside downtown Ottawa. Where a car earns its place is at the edges: the trip from Toronto, the transfer from the airport or station with luggage, an evening with a dinner reservation, or a group that does not want to coordinate several transit legs.
Honest alternatives to a private car
| Option | Typical time | Cost note | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private chauffeur from Toronto | About 4.5 hours each way | Fixed fare via booker | Groups, families, corporate guests, a day with luggage |
| Self-drive | About 4.5 hours each way | Fuel and parking | Travellers who want independence and a car |
| VIA Rail | Check the current timetable | Lowest | Solo and couple travellers who prefer the train |
| Intercity coach | Check the carrier's timetable | Lowest | Budget travellers with flexible timing |
| Fly to Ottawa | Short flight, plus airport time | Varies | Short stays where time matters |
| O-Train within Ottawa | Short hops | Lowest | Moving between the station, downtown and the airport area |
If you are travelling by yourself and carrying a small bag, the train from Toronto and the O-Train into the centre is the cheapest comfortable route. A private car becomes the better choice when you are three or more, when you have luggage or a child seat, or when you want to leave exactly when you are ready.
Groups, children and accessibility
An Executive Sedan carries up to three passengers with two large and two carry-on bags. Six people and five or six large cases fit in a luxury SUV. The executive Sprinter has 12 to 14 seats and room for a dozen or more cases. See the fleet for details. Child, toddler and booster seats are provided when requested at booking.
Security screening at the tours is airport-style, so large bags and strollers can slow the line. Leave bulky items in the vehicle if your chauffeur is waiting, or in your hotel. If any traveller uses a mobility device, say so when you reserve the tour and when you book the car.
Weather and seasons
Ottawa has a cold, snowy winter and a warm, humid summer. Autumn is pleasant but can be wet. In winter, pavements around the Hill and the Market are icy, and the walk between the two is the part of the day most affected.
Bring a layer in every season. In winter, bring proper boots and plan the walk between sites in short stages. The canal ice, when it opens, is a weather-driven decision announced by the NCC rather than a fixed date.
Booking the car for an Ottawa day
A few practical points:
- Tell us your hotel and the first tour time. We plan the drop-off around the screening queue, not the tour start.
- If you are crossing to Gatineau, say so. The bridges can be slow at the hour of the afternoon commute.
- For an evening return to Toronto, plan to leave downtown Ottawa before 4 p.m. to avoid the heaviest outbound traffic.
- Licensed, commercially insured vehicles and chauffeurs, 24/7 dispatch and a fixed fare quoted before you pay are standard.
Our cancellation terms are: more than 72 hours' notice no charge; 72 hours or less 10%; 48 hours or less 50%; 24 hours or less or no-show 100%, measured from the scheduled pickup time. For other Ottawa and national capital outings, see our Gatineau car service page, the attractions index and the events index.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Parliament Hill from Toronto by car?
About 450 km, usually 4.5 hours in good conditions via Highway 401 and Highway 416. The booker shows the exact fare for your pickup address and vehicle before you confirm.
Can I still tour Parliament Hill?
Yes, but not Centre Block. Tours of the House of Commons run in West Block and tours of the Senate run in the Senate of Canada Building, starting from the Visitor Welcome Centre or the building itself. Reserve online and expect airport-style security.
Is the Changing of the Guard running?
It is a summer ceremony that starts at 10 a.m. in season. The schedule changes from year to year, so check Ottawa Tourism's current page before planning a morning around it.
When is the ByWard Market open?
Heritage Hall is open year-round. The outdoor market on York Street and the Vendor Village on George Street run Wednesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., May to October and on holidays. Individual businesses set their own hours.
Where can a car drop us near Parliament Hill?
Wellington Street runs along the front of the Hill, and your chauffeur confirms the exact stop on the day. A side street a block away is often easier than the main entrance.
Is it worth driving between the Hill and the Market?
Usually not. They are a short walk apart. Use the car to reach Ottawa and to move between distant stops, and walk the downtown core.
What about winter?
The Rideau Canal Skateway usually opens between January and early March when ice allows. Dress for the cold, expect icy pavements near the Hill, and plan shorter walks between sites.
Can I add Gatineau to the same day?
Yes. The Canadian Museum of History is across the river from the Hill. Allow time for the bridge crossing and see our museum guide.
