Winterlude is the one festival in the capital that asks you to plan for the cold before you plan for the crowds. It sits on the Rideau Canal, across the river in Gatineau and in front of Parliament Hill, over a stretch of weeks in late January and February. If you are coming from Toronto, Montréal or the 401 corridor, the weekend works well as a short break: you leave Friday, skate or walk Saturday, and return Sunday. The question is how to arrive in Ottawa with a vehicle that is warm, reliable and parked where you need it, or not parked at all. This guide is written from the curb.
What Winterlude is and when it runs
Winterlude is a federal festival in Canada's Capital Region. The official Canada.ca page gives the 49th edition as running from 29 January to 15 February 2027, and Ottawa Tourism lists the same dates for the next festival. The 2026 festival ran from 30 January to 16 February. Dates move with the calendar every year, so confirm them on the official Winterlude page before you book anything.
The festival has two main outdoor sites, per Ottawa Tourism: Crystal Garden in Confederation Park in downtown Ottawa (ice sculptures, live shows and a new Lantern Grove), and Snowflake Kingdom in the North Section of Jacques-Cartier Park in Gatineau, with snow slides, winter activities and a Ferris wheel. Some evenings include an Afterslide programme. The third piece is the Rideau Canal Skateway, which has its own timeline: the National Capital Commission says it is weather dependent, and the Ottawa Tourism page says the season usually runs from roughly January to late February.
Most of the festival is free. A few rides and attractions charge admission, so check the festival's own site for specifics rather than relying on a printed price in a blog post.
How far is Ottawa from Toronto and Montréal?

Ottawa is about 450 km from Toronto, usually 4.5 to 5 hours by Highway 401 and 416 in winter-friendly conditions, and about 200 km from Montréal, usually 2 to 2.5 hours by the 40 and 417. TorontoBlackLimousine.net shows a fixed fare for your exact address and vehicle in the booker before you pay.
From Toronto, the route is the 401 east to Highway 416 north or Highway 7, a long but straightforward drive that takes in the Kingston area on the way. Our Toronto to Ottawa guide covers the stops. From Montréal, the Ottawa to Montréal guide describes the 200 km corridor on Highway 40 and 417, with a quieter alternative on the Gatineau side. A Friday departure in February can be slowed by snow, so leave earlier than the summer schedule suggests.
Both routes are normal for a chauffeured weekend. The Ottawa limo page covers the city itself, from the airport to the downtown hotels.
Winter driving, honestly
Weather is the main variable. A February run between Toronto and Ottawa can be dry and fast, or it can include snow squalls and a slow crawl somewhere along the 401. Dispatch is staffed 24/7 and watches conditions, so on a bad day you hear early if the pickup time should move. If you are driving yourself, leave in daylight, keep the fuel tank above half, and carry a charged phone.
On the Quebec side, the law is specific. According to Québec.ca, a vehicle registered in Québec must be fitted with winter tires from 1 December to 15 March, and the rule does not apply to vehicles registered outside Québec. Winter tires are still wise for anyone crossing into Gatineau in February. If your plan is a Gatineau stay, our Gatineau limo page covers the other side of the river.
Keep an hour's cushion in your arrival plan. A weather delay is far easier to absorb on a Friday afternoon than on a Sunday evening with a flight or a work morning ahead.
Where the festival sites are, and where a car can stop
Confederation Park and Crystal Garden. Confederation Park is in downtown Ottawa near Parliament Hill and the National Arts Centre, per the Ottawa Tourism page. In festival weekends the surrounding streets are busy with pedestrians, so the pickup is often a block or two away. The chauffeur confirms the exact spot on the day. If you are staying near the Rogers Centre Ottawa, formerly the Shaw Centre, at 55 Colonel By Drive, you are within walking distance, since its own site says the Skateway entrance is directly in front of the building.

The Rideau Canal Skateway. The NCC says the Skateway runs from downtown Ottawa to Hartwells Locks, including Dow's Lake, with about 30 staircases and five universal access ramps. Its recommended entrances include Rideau, Parliament (Mackenzie King West), Somerset East, Pretoria, Lansdowne (Holmwood and Fifth), Bronson, Dow's and Carleton University. The universally accessible ones, per the NCC, are Rideau, Mackenzie King West, Holmwood, Bronson and Dow's. The NCC access points page lists them, and its interactive map shows which sections are open.
Snowflake Kingdom in Gatineau. Jacques-Cartier Park is across the Ottawa River, so a visit to both main sites means crossing into Quebec. Rogers Centre Ottawa's guide notes that Snowflake Kingdom is across the river and not within walking distance of downtown. The drop-off is easy for a vehicle; the return pickup is the part to plan.
A sample Winterlude weekend from Toronto or Montréal
Friday. Depart Toronto in the morning or midday. Aim to arrive in Ottawa in time for an early evening walk by the canal. Check in downtown and eat close to the hotel. On a Friday, avoid trying to do both a long drive and a festival visit in the same afternoon.
Saturday. Spend the morning on the Skateway. Pick an access point close to your hotel and one further down the canal for the return, so you skate one way and are collected at the other end. In the afternoon, walk to Confederation Park and see the Crystal Garden. In the evening, cross the river for Snowflake Kingdom, particularly on the evenings when the festival runs the Afterslide.
Sunday. A late breakfast, a last walk by Parliament Hill, and a departure before the afternoon traffic. Remember that the festival crowd leaves at the same time as everyone else.
From Montréal, the same weekend works as a single overnight, since the 200 km drive is short enough to do on the morning of your first day.
Skateway logistics: bags, boots and one-way skates
Skating a long stretch of canal is easier without a backpack of shoes. A chauffeur can carry your boots, bags and any rented skates to the end point, so that you skate one-way. Our Luxury SUV carries up to 6 passengers with 5 to 6 large bags, and the Executive Sedan takes up to 3 passengers with 2 large bags and 2 carry-ons. Check the fleet for each class.

The NCC's access page lists parking and O-Train stations near each entrance, and many lots are paid. That is where a car that waits elsewhere is simpler: you are not circling for a spot while the group is cold.
Train, plane or car: the honest comparison
| Option | Approximate time | Cost note | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| VIA Rail | Direct service to Ottawa Station | Lower than a private car; check viarail.ca | Solo travellers, couples, a relaxed trip with no driving |
| Private car with chauffeur | About 4.5 to 5 hours from Toronto; 2 to 2.5 hours from Montréal | Fixed fare via the booker | Families, groups with gear, door-to-door |
| Flight into Ottawa airport | Short flight plus airport transfers | Varies by season | Long-distance guests |
| Driving yourself | Same road time | Fuel plus parking | Confident winter drivers |
| Local transit (O-Train, buses) | In the city | Lowest | Moving between sites once you are there |
The train is the better choice for many people. VIA Rail's Ottawa station is at 200 Tremblay Road, reached from the Queensway by the Vanier Parkway exit. The station lists taxis, the O-Train and city buses nearby, and it is accessible. The catch is the last mile: from Tremblay Road to the Skateway entrances or to the Gatineau sites you will need transit or a car. A private car makes more sense when the group is larger than two, when you are carrying gear, or when your plan includes the Gatineau side.
Groups, families and children
Winterlude is a family festival, and Snowflake Kingdom offers snow slides and winter activities. We provide child, toddler and booster seats when requested at booking, so a family travelling from Toronto does not have to carry seats. For a group of 7 to 14, For 12 to 14 people, the executive Sprinter takes a dozen or more bags as well. A stretch limousine (8 to 10 passengers) and a mini-coach or party bus (20 to 30) are hourly options, with availability and the exact vehicle confirmed at booking.

The festival is cold, so build in warm-up stops. If a child needs to go back to the hotel early, a car at the curb is much easier than a long walk or a wait for a bus.
Conferences and corporate Winterlude
Winterlude overlaps with the conference calendar, and delegates often use the festival for client evenings. Our guide to Rogers Centre Ottawa conferences explains the airport and train runs for that building. The event transportation page covers multi-vehicle groups.
Gatineau, the museums and a second day
If you have more than a weekend, add a day on the Quebec side. The Canadian Museum of History is across the river, and the Parliament Hill and ByWard Market guide covers the downtown core. In autumn the same region is lovely for a different reason, covered in our Gatineau Park fall drive guide. For more events across the year, see the events hub and the blog index.
Eating, warming up and downtown drop-offs
Winterlude is as much about warming up as skating. Ottawa Tourism's Winterlude page points visitors to Capital City Bites, which it describes as more than 40 participating restaurants offering prix fixe menus, and to Igloofest in Gatineau, which bills itself as the world's coldest music festival. Both are examples of why a weekend plan benefits from a car that stays on call: a dinner reservation in the ByWard Market and a late set across the river are not walkable from each other in February.
The practical tip is to book the dinner first and fit the festival around it. Restaurants hold tables for a short window, while a snow slide or a canal stretch can be done at any hour. Tell the chauffeur the reservation time and the car will work backwards from it, allowing for the slower pace of a winter city centre.
Downtown Ottawa on a Winterlude Saturday has more pedestrians than a normal winter weekend, and the streets around Confederation Park, Parliament Hill and the ByWard Market are the busiest. We do not publish a list of closures because the festival and the city publish them, and they change each year. What we do is plan around the principle: a drop-off on a side street one block from the main crowd, and a pickup agreed in advance at a corner both the chauffeur and the passengers can find in the dark.
For hotel guests, the lobby curb is usually the simplest pickup when the hotel has a drive-through. For those walking between sites, an agreed corner is better than a moving target. Phones lose battery in the cold, so write the meeting point down before you go.
Leaving Ottawa: the Sunday run
Sunday afternoon is when the festival crowd and the weekend visitors all go home at the same time. From Ottawa to Toronto, a departure in the late morning avoids the worst; from Ottawa to Montréal, the 200 km run is shorter and more forgiving, but a snow day still stretches it. If you plan to take the train instead, Ottawa Station's published hours run from early morning to 11:30 pm most days, and platform access is restricted until five minutes before departure, so build in a short wait in the main hall rather than arriving with seconds to spare.
Cancellation and booking terms
Winter weather and festival weekends make flexibility valuable. Our cancellation terms: more than 72 hours' notice, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10%; 48 hours or less, 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show, 100%, measured from the scheduled pickup time. Flight tracking is on every airport pickup, so a delayed flight into Ottawa moves the pickup rather than breaking it. We offer service in English and French in Quebec.
Frequently asked questions
When is Winterlude in Ottawa?
The 2027 festival is listed as 29 January to 15 February 2027 on the official Canada.ca page and by Ottawa Tourism. The 2026 edition ran from 30 January to 16 February. Dates change each year, so check the official Winterlude page for the next edition.
How far is Ottawa from Toronto?
About 450 km, usually 4.5 to 5 hours by road. From Montréal it is about 200 km, usually 2 to 2.5 hours. The booker shows the exact fare for your address before you confirm.
Is the Rideau Canal Skateway open for all of Winterlude?
Not necessarily. The Skateway is weather dependent, and the NCC opens sections in stages as the ice allows. Check the NCC's interactive map for current conditions before you go.
Where do I enter the Skateway?
The NCC recommends entrances near transit and parking, including Rideau, Mackenzie King West, Somerset East, Pretoria, Lansdowne, Bronson, Dow's and Carleton University. Rideau, Mackenzie King West, Holmwood, Bronson and Dow's are universally accessible.
Is Winterlude free?
Most of the festival is free, per the festival's published information, but some rides and attractions charge admission. Check the festival's own pages for the current list.
Do I need winter tires for Gatineau?
Québec requires winter tires from 1 December to 15 March on vehicles registered in Québec, but not on vehicles registered elsewhere. They are still a good idea for a February trip.
Can the car carry skates and gear?
Yes. A Luxury SUV carries up to 6 passengers and 5 to 6 large bags. Tell us at booking if you need to move skates or strollers from one end of the canal to the other.
Is the train better than a car from Toronto?
For one or two people, VIA Rail is often the better choice. For families, groups and anyone carrying gear, or planning the Gatineau side, a private car is simpler.
Do you serve Gatineau as well as Ottawa?
Yes. We serve Ottawa and Gatineau, and service in Quebec is available in English and French.
