Port Credit, Mississauga: a village on the lake inside a big city

Port Credit is the part of Mississauga that does not feel like a suburb. The Port Credit Business Improvement Area describes it as a lakeside urban village on the edge of Mississauga's waterfront, with restaurants, cafés, shops and views of Lake Ontario. The Credit River meets the lake here, a harbour and several marinas sit at the river mouth, and a small red-and-white lighthouse marks the spot. The result is a place you can walk end to end in an hour, with a main street on one side and open water on the other.

Visitors from downtown Toronto come for a restaurant evening, a waterfront walk, the Saturday market or a photograph of the lighthouse. Locals come for the same things, which is why parking and drop-offs matter more than they appear to on a map. This guide is written from the curb: the distance from downtown and from Pearson, which streets the lots and meters are on, what runs in October, and when the GO train is simply the better choice.

If you want a chauffeur for a Port Credit evening, book a Mississauga limo service here and the booker shows the exact fare for your address before you pay. If you never book, the details below should still help you plan.

Is Port Credit worth a visit if you are staying downtown?

Lakeshore in Mississauga, Ontario with rocky beach and trees at sunset
Lakeshore in Mississauga, Ontario with rocky beach and trees at sunset

Yes, for a calm waterfront evening or a Saturday morning at the market. It is about 24 km and 25 to 45 minutes from Union Station, so it works as a half-day trip. The lighthouse, the park and the main street are all within a short walk of each other.

Port Credit does not have a headline attraction in the way the CN Tower does. Its appeal is the combination: the lighthouse, the harbour, a long run of waterfront parkland, and a main street with places to eat. If you are in Toronto for a few days and have already seen the main sights, a trip west along the lake gives you a different view of the region for an afternoon. For a city waterfront closer to the core, the Toronto Islands ferry day is the downtown alternative.

How far is Port Credit and how long does the drive take?

From Union Station to the lighthouse is about 24 km. In light traffic that is roughly a 23-minute drive. Normal weekday traffic on the Gardiner Expressway and the QEW makes it 25 to 45 minutes, and a Friday evening or an event at Exhibition Place can push that higher. The QEW westbound is the artery that decides how smooth it is.

From Pearson Airport the distance is also about 24 km, typically 25 to 40 minutes, and the route usually follows the Highway 427 and QEW corridor or local roads depending on the day. If you are arriving on a flight and want to go straight to a dinner reservation in Port Credit, see our Pearson airport limo service for the pickup procedure. We track your flight and give 60 minutes of free waiting after international arrivals and 30 after domestic ones, so a delayed plane does not lose you the booking.

From Mississauga City Centre, the Square One area, the drive to Port Credit is only about 8 km, usually 15 to 20 minutes. For wider service around the city see our Mississauga limo service page.

The Port Credit Lighthouse

The lighthouse is at 105 Lakeshore Road West. It is a working light, visible about 15 miles out on Lake Ontario, and a small red-and-white structure that Historic Places Days calls the most photographed building in Mississauga. The current building dates from 1991. The same source says it is not a historic structure itself but a reminder of the town's marine heritage, and that the building also houses a Peel Region pumping station and the offices of the Port Credit BIA.

The history is layered. A first lighthouse was built in 1863 by Frederick Chase Capreol, a 1908 flood separated the old lighthouse from the mainland, it closed in 1918, and it burned in 1936. The listing is not consistent on the date of the wooden lighthouse, so we will not give you a single year for it.

For visitors the useful part is this: Historic Places Days says you can climb the stairs to the deck at no cost for a view of the Credit River, the harbour and the village. We could not find published opening hours for the deck, so contact the Port Credit BIA through its website before you plan around it. See the lighthouse listing for the description.

Marinas, the Credit River and J.C. Saddington Park

The BIA's map and parking page lists three marinas in the village: Credit Village, Port Credit Harbour and Port Street. Walking along the river on the harbour side is the most direct way to see the boats, and it is free. The same page mentions the Waterfront Trail for cyclists and walkers.

J.C. Saddington Park is at 53 Lake Street. The City of Mississauga lists it as open daily from dawn until 11 pm, with a looped path system, picnic areas, a playground, heritage buildings and an informal amphitheatre. It is a large green space built on a former landfill, which explains its rolling shape. The city's listing does not describe washrooms or parking, so if you need either, ask before you go. Details are on the City of Mississauga park page.

A short loop for a first visit takes about 90 minutes: lighthouse, river walk, a lap of the park, then back along Lakeshore Road to a café. Port Credit also pairs well with a longer waterfront day, for example the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington at the other end of the western GTA.

When to go: the Saturday market and October events

The Port Credit Farmers Market runs on Saturdays from 6 June to 10 October 2026, from 8 am to 2 pm, in the Port Credit library parking lot on Lakeshore Road East, along the Credit River. At the time of writing that means this Saturday, 10 October, is the last market of the 2026 season. The BIA's own pages list produce, baked goods, prepared food, artisan goods and live music; see the farmers market page for details.

The BIA also lists autumn events for October 2026:

  • Saturday 24 October, 12 to 4 pm: Fall #INThePort and the Great Scarecrow Hunt on Brant Avenue, with family activities, entertainment, crafts and a scarecrow trail through shop windows.
  • Friday 30 October, 5:30 to 8:30 pm: the Big Monster Mash Dance Party at Brightwater Pop-Up Park.
  • Saturday 31 October: the Spooky Paws dog costume show in the morning at the pop-up park at Lakeshore Road and Brightwater Boulevard, trick-or-treating with local businesses from noon to 3 pm, and a pumpkin patch from 2:30 to 5:30 pm.

Dates and details are the BIA's to set and to change. The fall events page has the current listing. Events are the days when the village is busiest, and the days when a pre-arranged drop-off on a side street makes most sense.

Where a car can stop: Lakeshore Road, lots and drop-offs

Lakeshore Road is the main street, and parts of it are narrow, with cars turning into lots and cyclists using the lane. A car cannot wait at the curb for long. That is why we plan drop-offs for Port Credit around the side streets and public lots rather than the road itself.

The BIA's maps and parking page lists municipal lots, with 3-hour and 15-hour limits depending on the lot. Among them are the library lot on Lakeshore Road East (the largest, with 158 spaces), a lot on Stavebank Road South (109 spaces), a lot on Elmwood Avenue North (62 spaces), and an underground garage on Port Street (43 spaces, 3-hour maximum). The page is undated, and its footer shows 2020, so confirm limits and rates at the meter or on the City of Mississauga's parking map. Street parking is paid within posted hours and limited to three hours.

For a chauffeured trip the process is simple. Tell the booker the restaurant or the lighthouse as the destination, and the chauffeur agrees the exact setdown with you. After dinner, a pickup from the restaurant's side street avoids the lane on Lakeshore Road. If your group is large, one person stays at the pick-up point while the others gather.

GO train, MiWay and when transit is the better choice

The BIA says Port Credit GO Station is on the Lakeshore West line, about three blocks from the waterfront, and that MiWay buses serve the village. For a solo visitor travelling on a weekday, the train from Union Station is a strong option and the lowest in cost. The GO Transit site has the current timetable and station information, which we do not quote here because it changes.

If you are going for the market on a Saturday morning, the train can beat the car, because the village is easy to reach on foot from the station. If you are going for a late dinner, the last return train is the limit, and that is when a car with a waiting driver is worth it. A taxi or rideshare is workable for the outbound trip but harder to secure late on a busy evening.

A Port Credit evening: dinner, a walk and a calm ride home

Here is an evening plan for a couple or a small group:

  1. 5:00 pm Depart downtown or the airport hotel. Expect 25 to 45 minutes.
  2. 5:45 pm Arrive, walk the river and the lighthouse before the light fades.
  3. 6:30 pm Dinner on Lakeshore Road or one of the side streets.
  4. 8:30 pm Optional stroll at J.C. Saddington Park if it is a mild night (the city lists it open until 11 pm).
  5. 9:30 pm Car collects from an agreed side street and returns you to your hotel.

Alcohol rules follow Ontario law and are confirmed at booking; we do not promise drinks on board. The point of a pre-booked return is that nobody has to drive after dinner, and nobody has to hunt for a car at the end of a long evening. If you are planning a birthday or anniversary dinner, our night out limo service covers this kind of trip, and a stretch limousine can be arranged with availability and the exact vehicle confirmed at booking.

Groups, families and accessibility

An Executive Sedan takes up to three passengers, a Luxury SUV up to six, and an Executive Sprinter 12 to 14. For a family day at the market or a group dinner, the SUV or Sprinter is the practical choice. Child, toddler and booster seats can be requested at booking.

On accessibility, one listing of the lighthouse describes it as family-friendly, pet-friendly and with parking, and says nothing about wheelchair access, so we cannot confirm it. If someone in your party uses a wheelchair or walker, ask the chauffeur to set down as close as the street allows, and check the specific venue. The park and the riverside path are the more reliable options for a smooth surface, but ask the City of Mississauga for specifics.

Weather on the waterfront

A waterfront walk is an outdoor plan, so dress for the lake: a layer more than you would wear downtown, and sturdy shoes for the river path. In winter, ice on side streets near the river makes the walk from the car to the restaurant slower, which is when a drop-off at the door matters. The lighthouse stairs are outdoors, so skip them in a storm.

Booking a car to Port Credit

Choose the vehicle by passengers and luggage, enter your pickup address and Port Credit as the destination, and set the time. For a return, add the second leg or waiting time. The booker shows the exact all-in fare before you confirm. Cancellation is free with more than 72 hours' notice; 72 hours or less 10%; 48 hours or less 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show 100%, measured from the scheduled pickup time.
