Why the Royal Botanical Gardens are not one garden

Most visitors imagine the Royal Botanical Gardens as a single place with a single gate. It is not. RBG is a group of sites on the shared edge of Burlington and Hamilton, each with its own address, hours and parking. The part that people usually mean is Hendrie Park and the RBG Centre, at 680 Plains Rd W in Burlington. The Rock Garden is a separate site at 1185 York Boulevard, and it is in Hamilton, not Burlington. RBG says the two are about 2 km apart and recommends driving, biking or taking transit between them.

That matters for a car plan. A visitor who tells a driver "the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington" and then expects to see the Rock Garden on foot has misread the map. A visitor who wants to see both gardens and have lunch in between needs a short sequence, not a single stop.

This guide is written from the curb. It covers the drive from downtown Toronto and Pearson, the parking and entrances at RBG Centre, the hours RBG lists for the current season, how to organise a garden day with a lunch stop, accessibility and autumn events. If you want a chauffeur for the day, see our Burlington limo service and Hamilton limo service pages, which cover both sides of the border between the two cities.

What is the best way to visit the Royal Botanical Gardens by car?

Drive to the RBG Centre and Hendrie Park at 680 Plains Rd W in Burlington, roughly 60 km from downtown Toronto and about an hour in normal conditions. Use the large lot outside the RBG Centre, walk through to Hendrie Park by the tunnel, then drive about 2 km to the Rock Garden in Hamilton.

The reason to drive the short hop between sites is simple: it saves a walk along a busy road and keeps your day bag, coats and any purchases in one place. A chauffeur can drop the group at the RBG Centre, wait nearby or return at an agreed time, and then move the group to the Rock Garden in a few minutes. The Rock Garden has its own large lot across the street, with accessible spaces directly outside the building.

The sites at a glance: Hendrie Park, RBG Centre, Rock Garden and the trails

RBG's own website lists the main places a visitor goes. The table below follows RBG's Visit page for the 2026 season. Hours and closures change, so confirm them on rbg.ca before you travel.

RBG lists final entry at 4 p.m. and notes several closures, including December 25 and January 1. It also lists Hendrie Park as closed on October 2 and from November 16 to 25 in the current season, and the Arboretum closed on September 22. Treat the dates as a reminder to check the live page, not as a substitute for it.

The drive from Toronto and Pearson

From downtown Toronto the Royal Botanical Gardens are roughly 60 to 65 km away by the QEW and local roads, and around an hour in normal conditions. Burlington's tourism office describes the Toronto to Burlington run as about 45 minutes, and the Gardens sit on the Hamilton side of Burlington, so allow a little more. A weekday midday trip is usually straightforward, while a Friday afternoon on the QEW is not.

From Pearson, expect roughly 45 to 55 km and 40 to 50 minutes, depending on the hour and the route. If you are arriving by air and heading straight to the gardens, tell the dispatcher when you book. Flights are tracked on every airport pickup, with 60 minutes of free waiting after landing on international arrivals and 30 on domestic, and a name-board meet-and-greet inside arrivals is available as an add-on.

The booker shows the exact distance, drive time and fixed fare for your own pickup address and vehicle before you confirm.

Parking and the drop-off at RBG Centre

RBG lists a large parking lot outside the RBG Centre, which serves Hendrie Park, the Garden Shop, the Greenhouse Café and the Teahouse. To reach Hendrie Park from the lot you go through the RBG Centre and use the tunnel in the lower level of the Atrium, which RBG says passes under Plains Road, with elevators. At the Rock Garden, the large lot is across the street from the building, and accessible spaces sit directly outside it.

Two details matter to drivers. First, RBG warns that parking can be limited during large events and recommends carpooling or rideshare. Second, parking at the Arboretum and trailheads is not included with garden tickets. If you plan to walk the Arboretum or the Hendrie Valley trails, check the parking arrangement for that trailhead first.

The RBG pages we checked do not describe a dedicated chauffeur drop-off zone, so the chauffeur confirms the exact spot on the day. The usual pattern is a drop close to the RBG Centre entrance, with the vehicle waiting nearby or returning at an agreed time. On busy event days, a drop and a later pickup beats a vehicle waiting in a crowded lot.

A gardens day: Hendrie Park, lunch and the Rock Garden

Here is a plan that works in a car, with sensible timing. It assumes a mid-morning arrival.

Toronto skyline and the CN Tower across the harbour
Toronto skyline and the CN Tower across the harbour
  1. Arrive at the RBG Centre at 10 a.m. and enter Hendrie Park. The gardens open at 10, and the early hours are the quietest. Walk the rose garden and the other displays before the crowds.
  2. Take a break at the Greenhouse Café or the Teahouse. The Teahouse needs a reservation, so book ahead.
  3. Walk or ride between areas. Hendrie Park is large, and it is worth deciding in advance which areas you want to see.
  4. Drive about 2 km to the Rock Garden in Hamilton. Allow time at the Rock Garden's lower bowl and the visitor centre.
  5. Finish with a short drive into downtown Burlington or back to Toronto. The car collects you at the Rock Garden's lot, and the booker shows the exact fare for the return.

Allow four to five hours for both gardens at an easy pace. If you only have two or three hours, choose one: Hendrie Park for variety, or the Rock Garden for a shorter, more compact visit.

For another garden-and-waterfall day on the same side of the lake, see Hamilton's waterfalls tour, or for a golf day in the next town east, Oakville and Glen Abbey.

Lunch: the Teahouse, the Café and the Bistro

RBG's own food options make a lunch stop easy. Its Visit page lists the Turner Pavilion Teahouse in Hendrie Park, open Wednesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with reservations and admission required. The Greenhouse Café at the RBG Centre is fast-casual and open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and admission applies. The Rock Garden Bistro is listed for Wednesday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with reservations recommended, during the season it operates.

These hours are the 2026 listing and change by season, so check before you plan a lunch reservation around them. If your group wants a sit-down lunch away from the gardens, Burlington has a downtown and a lakefront on Lake Ontario, and the drive from the RBG Centre is short. Your chauffeur can drop you at a restaurant of your choice and return at an agreed time.

Alcohol rules in a chauffeured vehicle follow Ontario law and are confirmed at booking, so we never promise drinks on board.

Accessibility and mobility

RBG's accessibility page is the best source for planning. It says a limited number of wheelchairs are available to borrow at the RBG Centre and Rock Garden Visitor Centre kiosks, first come and first served and not reservable, so it recommends bringing your own. Personal assistive devices are welcome, and accessible parking is available at all garden area parking lots; at the RBG Centre it is just past the main entrance on the left.

On the ground, the lower bowl of the Rock Garden and the rose garden in Hendrie Park have wide, paved paths. Other garden areas use fine gravel or grass. The trails are about one metre wide with natural surfaces, and the Arboretum and Hendrie Valley trails reach grades of 25%. Service animals are permitted in all RBG facilities, one attendant or caregiver receives complimentary admission, and RBG accepts the Access 2 Entertainment card.

For the journey, tell us at booking if a guest uses a wheelchair or walker, so the right vehicle is confirmed. A Luxury SUV (up to six passengers, 5 to 6 large bags) takes a folded wheelchair, and an Executive Sprinter (12 to 14 passengers) suits a larger group with mobility aids. Child, toddler and booster seats are available when requested at booking; see our page on car service with child seats.

Autumn events and weather

Gardens change with the seasons, and autumn brings events as well as colour. Tourism Burlington's October 2026 listings mention the Great Pumpkin Trail at RBG on several dates in mid and late October and an adults-only RBG After Dark event on October 22, and RBG's Visit page lists The Great Pumpkin Trail, RBG After Dark (19+) and Fall Displays in Hendrie Park as featured experiences. RBG notes that events usually need separate tickets, so check its events calendar before you book a car for an evening.

Evening events shift the plan. A pumpkin trail at dusk is a different trip from a morning in the gardens, and the vehicle pickup should allow for the crowd leaving at the same time. Check the closing time on the day, and agree the pickup spot in advance.

Weather matters in a garden. A sunny autumn weekday is the easy case. Rain turns the gravel paths slippery, and RBG's covered spaces, such as the RBG Centre, are the places to wait out a shower. In winter, the Rock Garden moves to a Thursday-to-Sunday schedule, so confirm days before you set out.

Groups, mixed ages and the day beyond the gardens

A garden day suits mixed-age groups because the pace is slow and there are places to sit. A grandparent, a toddler and a teenager can all enjoy Hendrie Park, though they may not all want the same trail. A chauffeur who drops the group close to the entrance, and collects them in the same place, saves a long walk at either end.

If you want to link the gardens with something else, the Hamilton and Burlington waterfronts are close, and the Toronto Zoo family day and Canada's Wonderland family day are other family trips from the GTA. For a longer day, the hourly chauffeur service lets you add stops without rebooking.

Honest alternatives: transit and driving yourself

RBG says both the RBG Centre and Hendrie Park and the Rock Garden are accessible by public transit, and it does not name specific routes on the pages we checked. If you are travelling without a car, plan the connection with a local trip planner and check Burlington Transit's current service, since routes and frequencies change.

OptionWhat it involvesBest for
Chauffeured carDoor to door from Toronto, Pearson or Hamilton, with a short hop between sitesGroups, mixed mobility, a lunch stop, a day with both gardens
Your own carFree choice of timing; parking at each siteCouples and small families
GO and local busTrain to Burlington or Aldershot, then a local busSolo visitors, lowest cost, no luggage

Transit is the lowest-cost option and works well for a solo visitor. A car wins when there is a group, a mobility need, a lunch plan or both gardens on the same day.

Our cancellation terms are simple: more than 72 hours' notice, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10%; 48 hours or less, 50%; 24 hours or less or no-show, 100%, measured from the scheduled pickup time.
