Distillery District Wedding Photos: Where the Car Waits and When to Arrive

The Distillery District is a 13-acre walking district about 2 km from Union Station. Here is how a wedding party arrives, where the car stages between photo stops, and how to build a timeline that survives cobblestones.

Why couples choose the Distillery District for wedding photos

Brick façades and narrow lanes make the Distillery District one of the few places in Toronto where a photographer can shoot six different looks inside ten minutes of walking. The address is 55 Mill Street, east of the downtown core and a short distance from the Don River. Every bride and groom who has scrolled through a Toronto photographer's portfolio has seen those lanes.

What the photos never show is the logistics: where the car stopped, how far the wedding party walked in dress shoes, and who held the door while a train of fabric was fed through it. This guide is written from the curb. It covers how the district handles vehicles as it publishes them, the real distances from Union Station, Pearson and the Don Valley, and a timeline that keeps the couple on schedule.

If you only need the car, jump to the booking button below or open the wedding limo page for vehicle classes and how multi-car weddings are handled by our Toronto dispatch.

How do you get a wedding party to the Distillery District?

Most wedding parties are driven to the edge of the district by a chauffeur, step out near the lane the photographer chooses, then walk the cobblestones while the car waits at a parking lot entrance. The district is run as a walking area, so the chauffeur confirms the exact staging spot on the day.

That short answer hides three decisions. First, the couple travels in one vehicle and the rest of the party in another, or everyone travels together in one larger vehicle. Second, the car either waits for the whole shoot or drops the party and returns on a call. Third, the group moves to the reception or to a second photo location straight after, which sets the pickup point.

Our wedding limo service, part of our wider limo service Toronto offer, books all of this as a single timed itinerary. Tell the booker the number of passengers, the Distillery District as the stop, and the next address; it shows the all-in fare for that exact itinerary before you pay.

The Distillery District is a walking district: what that means for the car

The official site describes the Distillery as a "13-acre walking district". It publishes parking lots and their entrances, but it does not publish a vehicle drop-off zone or a rideshare pickup point. We therefore do not promise one. What a good wedding driver does is work from what is published and from experience of the day.

The published picture is simple. Paid public parking is spread across the site. There is an above-ground lot along Distillery Lane that is entered from Parliament Street, and an underground level at 70 Distillery Lane that is entered from Cherry Street. Three more lots sit just off site, at Cooperage Street, Rolling Mills Road and Tannery Road. Those entrances are the places a car can legitimately be.

In practice that means the car's day looks like this: arrive from Parliament or Cherry, set the wedding party down as close to the first photo location as the site and the day's activity allow, then reposition to a lot entrance and wait on a text. Visitor crowds, deliveries and whatever else is on that day change what is possible. The chauffeur reads the lane on arrival; your photographer should know the planned first stop and tell the chauffeur by message the day before.

Read the district's own parking and accessibility page before the wedding. It lists the lot names and the accessibility provisions, and it is the best reference for a guest who needs a close stall.

Distances and drive times from downtown, Pearson and the GTA

The Distillery District is closer to downtown than most visitors expect. From Union Station it is about 2 km, four to eight minutes in light traffic and longer when the Gardiner ramps or Parliament Street back up. From Evergreen Brick Works, a popular alternative photo stop (see our Brick Works guide), it is about 5 km and roughly ten minutes with ordinary traffic.

From Pearson Airport Terminal 1 the drive is about 33 km, and the free-flow time on mapping data is around 35 minutes. At a 4 pm Friday the same trip regularly takes twice that. For a wedding with out-of-town guests arriving by air, our Pearson airport limo service tracks the flight and waits, and the same driver or dispatch can then move guests to the hotel and later to the photo location.

FromDistance to 55 Mill StreetTypical drive time
Union Stationabout 2 km5-15 minutes
Evergreen Brick Worksabout 5 km10-25 minutes
Pearson Terminal 1about 33 km35-70 minutes
Mississauga or Brampton hallroughly 35-50 km40-80 minutes
Markham or Vaughan hallroughly 35-45 km40-75 minutes

Distances come from open mapping data; the ranges widen on Fridays and Saturdays because the Don Valley Parkway, the Gardiner and Lake Shore Boulevard East share the load. Build in a buffer you can afford to lose rather than the fastest time you can hope to get.

Building the photo timeline around the car

Wedding photography at the Distillery runs on two clocks: the light and the district's opening hours. The site lists shops and restaurants open daily, with weekday hours that run until 8 pm Monday to Wednesday and 9 pm Thursday to Saturday, and Sunday 11 am to 8 pm. The lanes are least crowded early in the day and busiest in the afternoon on weekends, which is when many couples would prefer to shoot.

Work backwards from the ceremony. A common structure for a late-afternoon ceremony elsewhere in the city runs like this: hair and makeup finishing at the hotel or home, first look at the Distillery in the morning or early afternoon, family and bridal-party portraits, then a car back to the ceremony venue with at least 30 minutes spare. Build that spare time in. Saturday traffic on the way out of the district can erase a half hour without warning.

If the Distillery is the post-ceremony shoot instead, the car moves the couple straight from the ceremony to the lanes, the bridal party follows in a second vehicle, and the wedding reception starts 60 to 90 minutes later. The chauffeur holds the car at the lot entrance during portraits and is called to the pickup spot on a message from the photographer or best man.

Parking entrances and where a chauffeur actually stages

A chauffeur staging for a wedding shoot wants a position that satisfies four tests: legal, close enough to reach in two minutes, out of the photographer's frame, and not blocking someone else's delivery. At the Distillery the lot entrances on Parliament Street and Cherry Street meet the first three tests. The fourth depends on the day.

Be flexible about the first stop. A couple who planned the first look at one favourite lane may find a crowd already there at 11 am. Share one primary and one backup location with your driver so the car can pivot to the nearest entrance without a long phone call. If the photographer prefers a specific lane, ask them whether they have shot there recently and whether the lane was open to vehicles on that day.

Cobblestones, shoes and accessibility

The district itself warns visitors that its historic streets are cobblestone and uneven in places. That is a real consideration for heels, wheelchairs, walkers, strollers and grandparents. The same page lists mobility-accessible parking, ramp access to buildings, shops and restaurants, and accessible washrooms.

Practical advice from the curb:

  • Pack flat shoes or block heels for the walking portion and keep the dress shoes for the photo moment.
  • Ask the chauffeur to set down the elderly guests as close to the photo location as the day permits, then have a family member walk them in.
  • Give your driver the name of any guest who needs step-free access so that the staging plan accounts for it.
  • Keep a bag with water, flats, safety pins and a small steamer in the car. The car is a dressing room between stops.

If a family member has serious mobility needs, tell the booker at the time of booking. The dispatch team can suggest a vehicle with easier entry and a staging point with the shortest walk.

Photo permits and booking the district for a celebration

The district's home page has separate sections for weddings and celebrations and for photo and film permits. We do not state their rules or fees because the pages that explain them did not load for us at the time of writing, and details may change. The practical point is that professional photographers and film crews are normally expected to arrange this with the district before they arrive, so ask your photographer whether permission is already in place and who is named on it.

The district office handles inquiries Monday to Friday during business hours. Couples who plan a ceremony or reception in the district, as opposed to portraits only, should start with the venue booking contacts on the official site rather than with their transport company.

Where we can help is the timing. Once your photographer has an entry time and your venue has a doors time, send both to us and the dispatch will build the car schedule around them.

Choosing vehicles for the wedding party

Planning the grand arrival at a hilltop venue instead? Our Casa Loma wedding guide covers that sequence, and the events hub lists more seasonal guides. Match the vehicle to the party and to the photo plan, not to the picture you saw online.

VehicleCapacityBest for at the Distillery
Executive Sedanup to 3 passengers, 2 large and 2 carry-on bagsThe couple only, with one parent or a photographer assistant
Luxury SUVup to 6 passengers, 5-6 large bagsThe couple plus parents; easier step-in for formal wear
Executive Sprinter12-14 passengersThe full bridal party, one vehicle, one driver, one stop
Stretch Limousine8-10 passengers, hourlyTraditional arrival and a car that stays on hourly hire
Mini-coach / party bus20-30 passengers, hourlyLarger families moving between venues

Stretch limousines and party buses are booked hourly, and the exact vehicle is confirmed at booking. On alcohol, the rule on board follows Ontario law and is confirmed at booking; we do not promise drinks in the car.

Browse the fleet page for what each class looks like, and use the hourly chauffeur option if you want a driver at your disposal across the whole day rather than a single transfer.

Winter, rain and golden hour

Toronto weddings happen in every season, and the Distillery is popular in each of them. Summer brings the longest light and the biggest crowds. Autumn gives the best colour on the façades. Winter lights up the lanes at dusk, and the district's seasonal events can make the area busy; our guide to the Distillery Winter Village covers what changes on those weekends.

For rain, the car's job is to cut the walk. A chauffeur with an umbrella and a short exposed stretch from car to doorway is worth more than any extra photo hour. In winter the cobblestones can be slick, so a shorter staging distance becomes a safety issue as much as a comfort one.

Honest alternatives: TTC, walking, rideshare and parking yourself

A chauffeur is not the only way to get a wedding party to the Distillery, and it is not always the best.

Frequently asked questions

Can a limo drive into the Distillery District?

The district describes itself as a walking district and publishes parking lots and entrances, not a vehicle drop-off zone. Our chauffeurs stage at the lot entrances on Parliament Street or Cherry Street and set the party down as close as the day allows. The exact spot is confirmed with the chauffeur on the day.

Where is the closest parking to the Distillery District wedding photo spots?

The official site lists an above-ground lot along Distillery Lane entered from Parliament Street and an underground lot at 70 Distillery Lane entered from Cherry Street. Three additional lots sit just off the site at Cooperage Street, Rolling Mills Road and Tannery Road. Paid public parking is spread across the site.

How far is the Distillery District from Union Station and Pearson?

It is about 2 km from Union Station, usually 5 to 15 minutes by car, and about 33 km from Pearson Terminal 1, usually 35 to 70 minutes. The booker shows the exact fare for your address and vehicle before you confirm.

Do we need a permit for wedding photos at the Distillery District?

The district's website has a section for photo and film permits and another for weddings and celebrations. Rules and fees can change, so ask your photographer whether permission is arranged and confirm directly with the district office. We do not quote their terms.

Are the cobblestones a problem for the wedding party?

Yes, in places. The district warns that its historic streets are cobblestone and uneven. Wear flat or block-heeled shoes for the walk, have the chauffeur set elderly guests down close to the photo spot, and tell the booker if anyone needs step-free access.

What vehicle should we book for a bridal party of ten?

An Executive Sprinter carries 12 to 14 passengers and keeps the party together with one driver. A stretch limousine carries 8 to 10 and is booked hourly. Availability and the exact vehicle are confirmed at booking.

How much is a limo for Distillery District wedding photos?

The site does not list fares. Enter the pickup, the Distillery District stop, the next address and the passenger count in the booker and it shows the exact all-in fare, quoted before you pay.

Can the car wait for the whole photo session?

Yes, on an hourly booking. The chauffeur holds at a lot entrance during portraits and comes to the pickup spot on a message from the photographer or the best man. Hourly bookings are described on the hourly chauffeur page.

Can you carry champagne for the photos?

Alcohol rules follow Ontario law and are confirmed at booking. We do not promise drinks on board. Many couples bring a non-alcoholic toast for the lanes instead.
