Comedy festivals run on a different clock from concerts. A rock show has one start and one exit. A comedy night can mean a seven o'clock gala, a ten o'clock club set and a midnight show in a basement room three blocks away, and the whole point of the evening is the shuffle between them.

That shuffle is where a car helps and where it does not. This guide is written from the curb: how the rooms are spread across Montréal, which ones sit inside the Quartier des spectacles, how a chauffeur handles a late finish, and the cases where the right answer is to walk. If you are coming from Toronto, we also cover the 541 km run. For a car for the whole trip, start at our Montréal limo page.

When is Just for Laughs in Montréal?

The Montréal edition runs in July. The 2026 festival ran July 15 to 26. Dates for 2027 had not been confirmed consistently at the time of writing, so check the festival's own site before you book travel, hotels or a car.

The festival's official site is hahaha.com, with a Montréal page at montreal.hahaha.com. Tourisme Montréal's page confirms the 2026 dates of July 15 to 26. For 2027, different sources suggest slightly different weeks in mid-to-late July, and we are not willing to print a date we cannot verify. Treat anything you read on a third-party listing as provisional until the festival confirms it.

For transport planning, the useful point is the season. The weather is warm, the Quartier des spectacles hosts dozens of festivals across the year, and downtown streets are busier than usual. A pickup that works on a quiet Tuesday in March will not work the same way on a festival Friday.

The rooms: where Just for Laughs actually happens

According to Tourisme Montréal, the festival uses a long list of venues across central Montréal. The galas are taped at Théâtre Maisonneuve in Place des Arts, and free outdoor shows are held at Place des Festivals in the Quartier des spectacles. Other rooms named on that page include Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, the Olympia, Club Soda, Le National, the Gesù, Studio TD, MTelus, The Rialto, Comedy Nest, the Cinémathèque Québécoise, Espace St-Denis, Salle Claude-Léveillée, Café Cléopâtre and Théâtre Sainte-Catherine.

Two things follow from that list:

  • The festival is not one place. There is no single "festival grounds" with a ring road and a taxi stand. Rooms are in different parts of the core, and some of them are small rooms on ordinary streets.
  • A room's size sets its pickup problem. A 200-seat club empties in a trickle. A hall at Place des Arts empties in a surge. The plan for each is different.

We do not publish a street-by-street guide to each room here, because venue access, entrances and nearby closures change, and we will not print something we have not verified. The rule we follow everywhere is simple: where a venue or the city publishes nothing, the chauffeur confirms the exact spot and suggests a side-street corner.

The Quartier des spectacles on a festival night

The Quartier is the part of the festival where the choreography is hardest. Tourisme Montréal says it houses 80-plus performance spaces and hosts more than 40 festivals a year, and the transit agency STM says the Berri-UQAM, Saint-Laurent and Place-des-Arts métro stations serve it. The Bleury exit of Place-des-Arts station is two steps from the Promenade des artistes, according to STM.

For a car, the Quartier has three features that matter:

  1. Foot traffic dominates. On a festival night the streets in front of a gala fill with people, and a car that tries to enter the crowd moves slower than the crowd.
  2. Closures vary. Streets may be closed or restricted around the outdoor site and the larger halls. The festival and the city publish notices, and they are the source to check on the day.
  3. The metro is right there. Three stations within a few blocks of each other means you often have a faster option for a short hop.

All three point to the same practice: use the car for the first and last leg of the night, and let the neighbourhood do the middle.

Getting to Montréal from Toronto

Toronto to Montréal is about 541 km by Highway 401 and Highway 20, usually 5.5 to 6.5 hours. A July Friday is a heavy travel day on that corridor, so we suggest one of three plans:

Passenger on a station platform beside a train
Passenger on a station platform beside a train
  • A Thursday arrival. Leave Toronto in the afternoon, check in for the evening and be fresh for a Friday show night.
  • A midday Friday arrival. Leave early, stop once, and arrive before the afternoon peak.
  • A train. VIA Rail serves Montréal Central Station, and a car can meet you there; our Central Station car service page explains the pickup.

If you want to stop in the middle, our Toronto to Montréal route page lists the usual halves of the drive. Service in Québec is available in English and French, so your driver and your dispatcher can work in whichever you prefer.

A comedy crawl: moving between two or three shows

Festival-goers who book two or three shows in one night tend to find the trick is not the car but the margin. A workable pattern:

  • Leave at least 45 minutes between a show's end and the next one's start. Comedy rooms are not like theatres; the finish time is soft, and encores and last jokes add time.
  • Pick shows that are close to each other. Two rooms a few blocks apart can be walked. Two rooms across the core call for a car.
  • Tell dispatch your whole plan at booking. A chauffeur who knows you will need to leave a gala at 9:40 for a 10:15 set at a different room can plan the route and the corner.
  • Do not squeeze a hotel stop in the middle. If you need to change or drop bags, do it before the first show or after the last.

An hourly booking is the way to hold a car across a night like this, and our hourly chauffeur page explains how that works. You see the exact fare in the booker before you confirm.

Free outdoor shows and the Place des Festivals crowd

Tourisme Montréal notes free outdoor shows at Place des Festivals. Free means a different kind of crowd from a ticketed hall: it arrives and leaves on no schedule, it spills across the surrounding streets, and it includes people who decided an hour earlier to come. If your evening includes the outdoor stage, plan around it in three ways.

Downtown Montréal skyline seen from Mount Royal

  • Stay out of the middle. Dinner and the car should both sit on the edge of the crowd, not inside it.
  • Choose your hall for the late show. Ticketed rooms empty on a predictable clock. The outdoor site does not.
  • Walk a few blocks before the pickup. Moving away from the outdoor site, in any direction, shortens the wait for a car and cuts the chance of a closed street between you and it.

None of this needs a special vehicle. It needs a corner agreed in advance and a chauffeur who knows the plan.

The late pickup

The late pickup is where most comedy nights come apart. The last show finishes close to midnight, thirty people are standing on the kerb, and a car that was ordered for 11:50 is somewhere behind a delivery truck.

A good late pickup has four parts:

  • A specific corner, agreed in advance. Not "outside the venue" but "the northeast corner of the next block."
  • A buffer. A pickup window of twenty minutes is realistic for a venue with a surge exit.
  • Live location, shared. It lets the chauffeur see the street you are on.
  • A walk toward the car. Meeting the car at the corner is almost always faster than waiting for it to reach you.

Many comedy rooms serve drinks, which is the practical argument for a chauffeur: nobody in your group needs to think about the drive. What may be consumed in a vehicle follows Québec law and is confirmed at booking, and we never promise drinks on board.

From Trudeau airport to a festival hotel

Arriving by air, the run from Trudeau to the downtown hotels is about 20 km and takes anywhere from 25 to 45 minutes, depending on the hour. Every airport pickup includes flight tracking, with 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing and 30 after a domestic one. Our Montréal-Trudeau airport page explains the terminals.

The public option is the 747 bus. Per STM's 747 page, the downtown route has ended at René-Lévesque and Berri since January 26, 2026, and buses generally leave every 10 to 20 minutes. The listed fare in 2026 is $11.25 and doubles as a 24-hour pass across bus, metro, exo and REM in Zone A. For one traveller with one bag, that is sensible. For a group, a late flight or a client, a car is simpler.

Groups, couples and corporate guests

  • A couple. An Executive Sedan (up to 3 passengers) or a Luxury SUV for the airport legs. The metro for short hops.
  • A friends' group. A Luxury SUV (up to 6) or an Executive Sprinter (12 to 14) for a night of several rooms.
  • A bachelor or bachelorette night. A stretch limousine (8 to 10) or a mini-coach / party bus (20 to 30), both hourly. Availability and the exact vehicle are confirmed at booking. See night-out limo for how those evenings run.
  • Corporate entertaining. Many companies take clients to a gala. Our corporate car service page covers accounts.
  • Families. Child, toddler and booster seats can be requested at booking.

Accessibility and comfort

Venues in the Quartier vary in their step-free access, and the festival publishes its own accessibility information. If someone in your group uses a mobility aid, tell dispatch at booking so the pickup can be planned at a corner with a level kerb. Check STM for station accessibility on any metro leg you plan to use.

Weather and the July reality

July in Montréal is warm and sometimes humid, with the occasional thunderstorm. When a storm hits, outdoor audiences scatter and everyone looks for a ride in the same five minutes. If rain is forecast, time your exit just ahead of or behind the rush, and carry a small umbrella.
