Montmorency Falls drop 83 metres at the eastern edge of Québec City, which is about 30 metres more than Niagara, and they sit close enough to Old Québec that most visitors do the trip in half a day. The question is rarely whether to go. It is which entrance to use, whether to ride the cable car or climb the 487 steps, and how to get back to a hotel in the Old City without waiting on a roadside. This guide is written from the curb, for readers planning a Québec City limo and for readers who will take the bus.

How far are Montmorency Falls from Old Québec by car?

About 15 km, usually 15–20 minutes by road from the Château Frontenac area. Québec City Tourism lists the park about 15 minutes from Old Québec. From Jean-Lesage airport it is about 26 km and 25–35 minutes. The park is at 5300 boulevard Sainte-Anne.

Those figures are off-peak. On a summer afternoon boulevard Sainte-Anne can slow, so for a timed departure, such as a train or a flight, build in a margin of about fifteen minutes. Distances here are road distances rounded to the nearest kilometre; the booker shows the exact fare for your pickup address and vehicle before you confirm.

What the park offers, and why people go

The falls are the headline, but the park around them gives you several ways to see them. According to Québec City Tourism's park listing and Bonjour Québec, which are the sources for this section:

View of Montmorency Falls with lush greenery and a suspension bridge in Québec City
View of Montmorency Falls with lush greenery and a suspension bridge in Québec City
  • A glassed-in cable car climbs the cliff to the Manoir, where the panoramic walking tour begins. The Manoir has an interpretation centre, a gift shop and a restaurant.
  • A suspension bridge crosses the top of the falls with a view toward the St. Lawrence and Île d'Orléans.
  • A panoramic staircase of 487 steps leads down the cliff to the foot of the falls. In summer the same staircase is a workout in the other direction.
  • A footbridge near the base lets you stand close to the spray.
  • The La Baronne lookout, reached from the Manoir terrace, is the place to watch the zipline riders cross the cove. The zipline itself is a 300-metre line across the falls.
  • Via ferrata routes (three, according to Québec City Tourism) cover the cliff for climbers.

The park is open year-round and is closed on December 25. Opening hours vary by season and can change without notice, so check the official site on the day. Access for people with limited mobility is listed as partial, which means some viewpoints suit a wheelchair or a stroller and others do not.

When to go

The falls are spectacular in all seasons, but they are different experiences.

  • Spring: snowmelt feeds the falls. Expect wet paths and check which attractions are operating.
  • Summer: longest days, all attractions operating, and the biggest crowds from late morning. Go early, or late.
  • Autumn: Bonjour Québec recommends fall for the colour along the cliffs. Weekends in good weather are busy.
  • Winter: Québec City Tourism notes that the falls are impressive in winter too. The paths can be icy, and the cable car and some attractions have winter hours.

If your trip is limited to a few hours, pick the morning, when parking is easier and the return drive to the Old City is quicker.

Choosing your entrance: the top, the base, or both

The park has more than one way in, and the one you choose determines your day.

Château Frontenac above Old Québec

The upper entrance at the Manoir end gives you the cable car, the suspension bridge and the walking tour along the clifftop. Bonjour Québec says the upper park entrance is about a five-minute walk from the Chute-Montmorency terminal where the RTC 800 bus stops.

The base is where the staircase ends and the footbridge sits close to the water. Most people reach it by riding the cable car down, or by walking the staircase down and riding up. If you plan to climb the 487 steps, decide whether you want to climb up or come down. Coming down is easy; climbing back up is a real effort for most visitors, and the cable car is the usual way back.

Park at the entrance you plan to use and plan to leave from the same place. With a chauffeur, the pickup point is the one you agree beforehand; with your own car, you need to walk back. Free outdoor parking and paid parking are both listed on Québec City Tourism's page, without a fee schedule, so the current price is something to check at the gate.

The curb reality: where a car stops

Neither Québec City Tourism nor the park pages we reviewed describe a drop-off zone for private cars, so we keep this general. Your chauffeur confirms the exact stopping point at pickup, based on the day and the crowds, and the park's address for the car is 5300 boulevard Sainte-Anne.

If you are going to the base and the staircase, a good habit is to agree on a landmark for the return, such as the front of the Manoir or the cable-car station. On a busy summer day, texting the chauffeur when you start walking back gives a ten-minute head start on the pickup.

For groups, the vehicle size matters at the entrance. A Luxury SUV (up to 6 passengers) and an Executive Sedan (up to 3) are easy to place. An Executive Sprinter for 12–14 passengers needs a bit more room, so we suggest telling the dispatcher the group size at booking. A mini-coach or party bus (20–30 passengers) is an hourly booking with the exact vehicle confirmed at booking.

A half-day plan from Old Québec

This plan assumes a hotel in the Old City and a car on an hourly booking. It moves the longest walk to the cooler part of the day.

  1. Hotel pickup in Old Québec (8:30–9:30 a.m.). The drive to the park is 15–20 minutes.
  2. Cable car up, walking tour along the top (60–90 minutes). Suspension bridge, the Manoir terrace and La Baronne lookout.
  3. Staircase down, footbridge at the base (30–45 minutes). The 487 steps are easier descending. If you prefer, ride the cable car down.
  4. Coffee or a meal at the Manoir terrace or the LE 1759 food truck, as Québec City Tourism lists. Check seasonal availability.
  5. Optional: a loop over to Île d'Orléans (see the next section).
  6. Return to the Old City or on to the airport, the train or the Port.

For a longer day, our city-tour service can combine the falls, the island and the Old City in one booking. If you are connecting to a flight, Jean-Lesage airport transfers are timed to your departure.

Pairing the falls with Île d'Orléans

Île d'Orléans, whose six villages are introduced on the island's official tourism site, starts only a few kilometres east of the park. By road the park's entrance to the island's bridge landing is about 4 km, usually under ten minutes, so the two make a natural pair for a full day. Our guide to the Île d'Orléans food and wine loop explains how to do the island without a rush.

A common pairing is the falls in the morning and the island in the afternoon, with a late lunch on the island. The reverse also works, especially in autumn when you want the light on the cliffs at the end of the day. If you want to add a producer visit, book the car by the hour and share the stops in advance, so the chauffeur can sequence them.

Families, groups and accessibility

Families should know that the staircase is a major effort: 487 steps is not a stroller route, and small children can ride the cable car instead. Child, toddler and booster seats are provided when requested at booking, which matters because the road to the park is a short but busy drive.

Groups visiting for photographs should know that the pathways are shared with the public, so arrive early and allow time for the cable car queue. Alcohol rules follow Québec law and are confirmed at booking, and we never promise drinks on board; a daytime photo stop at a public park is best treated as a dry outing.

For visitors with reduced mobility, the park lists access as partial. Tell us at booking so the stopping point and the plan reflect it, and ask the park about the specific viewpoints you want to reach.

Weather and what to wear

Spray from the base can wet a jacket near the falls, and in the cold months paths can be icy. Plan for sturdy shoes, a waterproof layer and gloves. A wet staircase is a slow staircase, so allow extra time.

In rain, the cable car and the viewpoints at the top still work, and the clifftop views are often better than expected. A morning of poor weather does not need to cancel the day, because the island loop or the Old City can fill the afternoon.

Arriving from Montréal, Toronto or by train

The falls are a short trip for visitors who have already arrived in Québec City, but many people include them on a longer journey. From Montréal it is about 255 km to Québec City, typically 2.75–3 hours, and the falls are an easy first stop on the northeastern edge of the city. Our Montréal to Québec City car service is built for that run. From Toronto the trip is a long day, about 800 km, so most travellers split it with an overnight; see the Toronto to Québec City route.

By train, Gare du Palais is the Old City lower-town station; the road distance from there to the park is similar to the Château Frontenac figure. Our Gare du Palais car service meets arriving passengers for exactly this kind of short onward trip. Service is available in English and French across Québec.

Honest alternatives: bus, tour or your own car

A chauffeur is not the lowest-cost way to see the falls, and it is not always the best way either.

OptionTime and effortCost noteBest for
RTC bus 800 to Chute-Montmorency terminalyear-round service; the upper entrance is about a five-minute walklowestsolo visitors, flexible schedules, no luggage

If you are alone, flexible and travelling light, the 800 bus is a real answer and Québec City Tourism lists it as one. The car wins when you are tied to a train or a flight, when you are carrying bags, or when you want to link the falls with the island in a single plan.
