A February weekend in Québec City asks two things of your transport: that it copes with winter, and that it understands a very old town. The first is about tires, forecasts and patience on Highway 40. The second is about walls, hills and narrow streets that were laid out long before cars.

This guide is written from the curb. It covers how the Carnaval is organized, what the organizers publish about access, how far it is from Montréal and Toronto, where a chauffeur can stop, and the cases where the shuttle or the train is the better choice. For a car and driver in the city itself, see our Québec City limo page; the booker shows the exact all-in fare for your address before you pay.

When is the Carnaval de Québec in 2027?

The official site lists the next Carnaval de Québec from February 5 to 14, 2027. That is ten days over two weekends. Dates, programme and site maps are published by the organizers each year, so confirm everything on carnaval.qc.ca before you book hotels or a car.

The date comes from the festival's own site, carnaval.qc.ca. The same page describes the Ice Palace of Bonhomme, two night parades, snow and ice sculptures, musical evenings and activity sites for kids and adults. It does not publish a ticket price or a full site map for the 2027 edition at the time of writing, and neither do we.

One caution about reading details online. Many of the access pages on the Carnaval's website were written for the 2026 edition, with 2026 dates on them. We quote them below as "the 2026 edition" so that you can see how the organizers have handled access, but you should treat the 2027 version as the authority.

How far is Québec City, and from where?

From Montréal, Québec City is about 255 km. The drive takes 2.75 to 3 hours in normal conditions, by Highway 40 on the north shore or Highway 20 on the south shore, with Trois-Rivières as the natural midpoint. In winter, add time and keep a margin for snow. Our Montréal to Québec City route page covers both highways.

From Toronto, the distance is about 800 km, which is a long day or an overnight trip. The practical way is to split it at Montréal: Toronto to Montréal is 541 km via Highway 401 and Highway 20, usually 5.5 to 6.5 hours, then Montréal to Québec City the next morning. Our Toronto to Québec City page explains the one-day and two-day options, and the desk can advise on a longer single run.

A February Friday departure from Toronto is a heavy drive. A Thursday evening to Montréal and a Friday-morning run to Québec City is far more civilized.

Winter driving and the Québec tire rule

Québec's winter tire law is worth knowing even if it does not apply to you. According to Québec.ca, winter tires are required from December 1 to March 15 on motor vehicles registered in Québec, including rental vehicles registered there. The requirement does not apply to vehicles registered outside Québec. That means a car from Ontario is exempt, but exempt is not the same as ready: winter tires are still the sensible choice for a February trip.

Our own approach is practical rather than legal. Whatever the rule says, a chauffeur on a winter run watches the forecast and the road reports, slows for the weather, and tells you if a delay is coming. For the drive itself:

  • Leave earlier than the clock suggests. A snowfall adds time, and a Friday afternoon adds more.
  • Fuel and rest stops are part of the plan. Trois-Rivières is the natural break between Montréal and Québec City.
  • A heavy bag stays in the boot. In an Executive Sedan, two large bags and two carry-ons fit; a Luxury SUV (up to 6 passengers, 5 to 6 large bags) is the better choice if the group is bringing winter coats and boots.

The Carnaval's own access advice

The Carnaval's getting-to-the-carnival page describes the 2026 edition's access options. It calls Réseau de transport de la Capitale (RTC) bus service the best way to get there worry-free, offers advance parking reservations through a partner service, recommends the ferry across the St. Lawrence for visitors from outside the Québec City area, and described free shuttles running between Upper Town and Lower Town by way of Espace Quatre Cents on the dates of that edition.

Those are the official recommendations, and they show how the organizers want the Carnaval to work: transit and shuttles first, cars used sparingly. A chauffeur fits this model well because the best use of a private car in a pedestrian-heavy event is at the edges, for arrival and departure, rather than in the middle.

Where a car can drop you: the 2026 drop-off zones

The Carnaval's accessibility page lists named drop-off zones for the 2026 edition. These are useful as a model of how the festival thinks about kerbs:

  • Zone Loto-Québec, at the corner of D'Auteuil Street and Grande Allée, reached via D'Auteuil from Saint-Jean Street. On weekdays when the pedestrian zone is not in effect, you may be able to get closer, depending on signage.
  • Place Érable du Québec and the Scotiabank Sculpture Garden, at the corner of Wilfrid-Laurier Avenue and Place George-V East.
  • Gougoune et doudoune, in front of Espace Quatre Cents at 100 Quai Saint-André.
  • Night parades. In 2026 the Limoilou parade used a drop-off near 320 Chemin de la Canardière, and the Grande Allée parade used the two corners above.

The zones are intended for people with reduced mobility, and the page is explicit about that purpose. We mention them to show where the organizers expect vehicles to stop, not to suggest every guest should use them. For 2027, check the organizers' pages for the current list. Where nothing is published for a site, your chauffeur confirms a meeting corner and, if needed, a side street.

Old Québec: what a car can and cannot do

Old Québec is a walled city on a hill, with a Lower Town and an Upper Town. Québec City's tourism site notes road works in the city centre and links to access guidance, and also says motorcycles are not allowed inside the Old City walls without a reservation at a hotel inside. Plan on the old streets being narrow, steep and busy in February.

The practical rules are the same as for any historic centre:

  1. Stay near the edge of the busiest blocks. A hotel in Upper Town and an evening in Lower Town can be separated by a steep stair or a long loop by road. The Carnaval's free Upper-Lower Town shuttle in 2026 existed for that reason.
  2. Ask your hotel where cars may stop. Many old buildings have only a short loading zone and no space to wait, so agree the meeting spot before you go out.
  3. Allow for the walls. The Plains of Abraham sit just outside the walled city, and the official 2026 access page lists two reduced-mobility parking spaces nearby, so expect the busiest pedestrian flows around that edge.

Arrival by train, plane or road

By train. VIA Rail's Gare du Palais is at 450 rue de la Gare du Palais in Lower Town, and its station page lists the station hours (Monday to Friday 04:00 to 00:01; Saturday and Sunday 06:00 to 00:01), RTC bus connections, taxi and ride-hail access, and accessibility services. Our Gare du Palais car service page explains how a car meets the train.

By air. Jean-Lesage airport is about 15 km from downtown, according to Québec City's tourism site, and it lists RTC routes 76 and 80 as the bus options. Our Québec City airport page covers pickups, and flight tracking is included on every airport pickup.

By road. If you are driving from Montréal, the Carnaval's own advice favours leaving the car at the hotel and using the shuttle and buses.

A Friday-to-Sunday outline

A weekend that keeps the car at the edges:

Car headlights on a snowy forest road
Car headlights on a snowy forest road
  1. Friday. Arrive from Montréal by early afternoon. Check in, walk Old Québec, and see Bonhomme's palace by day. Dinner in the Old City.
  2. Saturday. Daytime sites on foot or by shuttle. A night parade if it is on, using the organizers' published access. A car back to the hotel when the crowd begins to move.
  3. Sunday. An unhurried morning and a mid-day departure. Winter roads are better in daylight, and a late Sunday departure is the one most likely to hit weather.

For corporate groups, families and couples, the same shape works. The city tours page explains how to hold a car by the hour for sightseeing.

Groups, families and accessibility

  • Families can request child, toddler and booster seats at booking. Winter coats take space, so choose the next vehicle class up if you are in doubt.
  • Groups of 12 to 14 fit an Executive Sprinter, which also carries 12 or more bags.
  • Larger parties can use a mini-coach or party bus (20 to 30) or a stretch limousine (8 to 10) on an hourly basis; availability and the exact vehicle are confirmed at booking.
  • Accessibility. The Carnaval's accessibility page says outdoor sites are only partly accessible and recommends being accompanied; reserved areas at musical evenings and night parades include ramps, platforms and nearby accessible washrooms. Tell dispatch at booking so the pickup can be planned near a level kerb.

Service in Québec is available in English and French.

Clothing, weather and the February reality

February in Québec City is cold. Expect temperatures well below freezing, wind off the river and icy pavements. A car is a warm room between outdoor events, and that matters more here than in almost any other city on our network. Dress in layers, bring insulated boots, and keep a hat and gloves within reach of the pickup point; a chauffeur can keep the car warm but cannot warm the walk.

Alcohol is a feature of some Carnaval evenings. What is allowed in a vehicle follows Québec law and is confirmed at booking, and we never promise drinks on board. The simple advantage of a chauffeur is that no one in your group has to drive home.

If you are a pair with light bags and a hotel inside the walls, the train and the shuttle are often the better answer. A car wins when you are arriving from Toronto, travelling as a group, carrying gear, or leaving after dark on a winter road.

Pair it with the summer festival

Québec City's other major event is the summer festival; our post on the Festival d'été de Québec covers that side of the city. For a winter comparison elsewhere, see the Winterlude weekend in Ottawa. The events hub lists the rest, and our Montréal limo page is the starting point if your journey begins there.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Carnaval de Québec in 2027?

The official site lists February 5 to 14, 2027. Programme, sites and access details are published by the organizers each year, so check carnaval.qc.ca before you book.

How far is Québec City from Montréal and Toronto?

About 255 km from Montréal, usually 2.75 to 3 hours by Highway 40 or 20. From Toronto it is about 800 km, which is a long day or an overnight trip; many travellers split it at Montréal (541 km, 5.5 to 6.5 hours).

Do I need winter tires to drive to the Carnaval?

Québec's rule applies to vehicles registered in Québec, from December 1 to March 15, and does not apply to vehicles registered outside Québec. Winter tires are still advisable for a February drive. Check Québec.ca for the current rule.

Where can a car drop me at the Carnaval?

The organizers publish drop-off zones, mainly for visitors with reduced mobility, and they change by edition. In 2026 they included corners on Grande Allée, Wilfrid-Laurier Avenue and in front of Espace Quatre Cents. Your chauffeur confirms the meeting point on the day.

Is the train better than driving to Québec City in winter?

Often yes for a couple travelling light. VIA Rail arrives at Gare du Palais in Lower Town. A car is better when you have luggage, a group or a late departure.

Can you pick me up from Jean-Lesage airport?

Yes. The airport is about 15 km from downtown, and flight tracking is included on every airport pickup. International arrivals include 60 minutes of free waiting after landing, and domestic arrivals 30.

What does a Carnaval transfer cost?

We do not publish prices on this page. The online booker shows the exact all-in fare for your pickup address and vehicle before payment.

What is your cancellation policy?

More than 72 hours' notice: no charge. 72 hours or less: 10%. 48 hours or less: 50%. 24 hours or less, or a no-show: 100%, measured from the scheduled pickup time.
