How do you get from Toronto to a Muskoka cottage on the Victoria Day weekend?

Take Highway 401 and Highway 400 north to Barrie, then Highway 11 north to your Muskoka exit. Gravenhurst is about 160 km from Toronto, roughly 1.5 hours on a quiet road and noticeably longer on the Friday of the holiday weekend. A booked chauffeur drives, so the traffic is not your problem.

Every spring the same thing happens. Winter ends, the water systems get turned on, the dock goes back in, and half of the city decides to be at the lake by Friday evening. The result is a northbound line of cars that has little to do with distance and everything to do with timing.

This guide is written from the curb outward: where the pickup happens in Toronto, how the road behaves, what the last twenty minutes of a cottage lane look like, and when it makes more sense to drive yourself. If you want a driver for the weekend, you can get an instant fare for your exact address, and the booker shows the all-in fixed fare before you confirm. Our Muskoka limo service page covers the region in general; this post is about one weekend.

Which weekend is Victoria Day, and who gets the Monday off?

Victoria Day is the Monday before 25 May. In 2026 it fell on Monday 18 May, and in 2027 it falls on Monday 24 May, which makes the long weekend Friday 21 to Monday 24 May. Because the rule is tied to 25 May, the date moves between 18 and 24 May from year to year.

In Ontario, Victoria Day is one of the nine public holidays listed in the Employment Standards Act guide on ontario.ca. In Québec the same Monday is National Patriots' Day, listed by the province's workplace agency as a statutory holiday on the Monday that precedes 25 May; see the CNESST list of statutory holidays. So a Toronto family with relatives in Gatineau or Montréal is dealing with the same long weekend, just under a different name.

For Toronto travellers, the practical point is simple: offices, banks and government counters are closed on the Monday, and a very large number of people leave on the same Friday afternoon and come back on the same Monday evening. That is the pattern to plan around.

What does the route look like, exit by exit?

The route north does not change from year to year, and it is worth knowing before you hand over the details.

  1. Leave Toronto by Highway 401 and join Highway 400 northbound.
  2. Follow Highway 400 to Barrie. Parks Canada puts this first leg at approximately 80 km from Toronto.
  3. Past Barrie, keep left after the Duckworth exit to take Highway 11 north toward Orillia. Stay on Highway 11 rather than following Highway 400 toward Parry Sound.
  4. Leave at the exit for your town.

The official Muskoka tourism site, Discover Muskoka, lists the turn-offs: Highway 169 west for Gravenhurst and Muskoka Lakes, Highway 118 west for Bracebridge and the Muskoka Lakes, Highway 60 east for Huntsville and Algonquin Park, and Highway 117 east for Baysville and Dorset in Lake of Bays. The same region also includes Georgian Bay Township, which uses Highway 400 rather than Highway 11.

Gravenhurst is the first town off Highway 11. Parks Canada describes it as about an hour and a half north of Toronto, with roughly another 80 km from Barrie. Bracebridge and Huntsville lie farther up the same corridor, so the clock keeps running. Our Toronto to Muskoka route page lists the same turn-offs, and the ski and cottage transfer service page covers seasonal trips more broadly.

Why does the Friday matter more than the distance?

On an ordinary weekday, the run to Gravenhurst is a straightforward drive of about 160 km. On the Friday of the May long weekend, the northbound traffic from late morning through the evening is the story. The stretch around Barrie and the Highway 400 to Highway 11 transition is where the line forms, and a single stalled vehicle can make it worse.

There are three honest ways to deal with it:

  • Leave very early. A pickup in the early morning gets you past Barrie before the surge, and you arrive with the whole day at the cottage.
  • Leave late. A departure after the evening peak makes the road much easier, though you arrive in the dark on lanes that you may not know well.
  • Leave on the Thursday. If the employer allows it, Thursday evening is the quietest option of all.

Whichever you pick, check the road first. Ontario's 511 traveller information service shows more than 900 cameras, road conditions, construction, incidents and closures. Your chauffeur will already be watching it.

We do not quote a single "typical" holiday drive time, because the figure changes with the hour you leave. Give the booker your preferred pickup time and the chauffeur plans around the live conditions on the day.

How does a chauffeured cottage run actually work?

The sequence is deliberately plain.

  1. You book on the site and choose the vehicle class. The booker shows the fixed fare, quoted before you pay, for the Toronto address and the cottage address.
  2. Your chauffeur arrives at the Toronto address at the booked time. We dispatch from Toronto, 24 hours a day, so a 5 a.m. pickup is an ordinary request.
  3. Luggage, coolers and bedding go in at the curb. The chauffeur loads, so you can settle the children first.
  4. The drive north follows the route above, with a brief stop if you ask for one.
  5. The car goes as far up the cottage road as it safely can, and the chauffeur confirms the last approach with you.

Tell us anything unusual when you book. A locked gate, a steep lane, a road that the township does not grade in spring, or a property reached only by water all change the plan.

Which vehicle suits a cottage-opening weekend?

Cottage trips are heavy. The load on a first-of-the-season run is different from a city airport transfer: bags of groceries, a cooler, bedding, tool bags, a bicycle or a paddle. Pick the class by the luggage as well as the headcount.

Executive SedanUp to 32 large and 2 carry-on bagsA couple or a small family travelling light
Luxury SUVUp to 65 to 6 large bagsA family with a full weekend of gear
Executive Sprinter12 to 1412 or more bagsTwo families sharing, or a larger group opening a lodge

The full list, including the stretch limousine and party bus options, is on our fleet page. Stretch limousines and party buses are booked hourly, and availability and the exact vehicle are confirmed at booking. For a Muskoka run with luggage, the SUV and the Sprinter are the natural choices.

If you are travelling with children, ask for the child, toddler or booster seat when you book. Seats are provided when requested at booking, and the chauffeur fits them before you load the rest.

What about the last twenty minutes on cottage roads?

Muskoka's lakeshores are reached by narrow municipal and private roads, and spring conditions vary. The main highway is the easy part. The last stretch may be a township road with soft shoulders, a private lane with a gate, or a gravel approach that nobody has driven since the autumn.

Three practical points follow from that:

  • Give the full address and any lane name. A GPS does not always know private roads, and cell coverage may be patchy near the water.
  • Name a fallback meeting point. A marina, a general store or a crossroads works if the lane turns out to be impassable.
  • Boat-access cottages start at the dock. If your property can only be reached by water, the car goes to the marina or the public launch, and the boat takes over. We can meet you at the water's edge on the return, but the boat transfer itself is yours to arrange.

Which stops are worth making on the way?

Most people do not stop between Toronto and the lake, and most should not. If the children need a break, the Barrie area is the natural place to take it, because it is the last large town before the road narrows.

Once you are in Muskoka, a couple of stops work well for a long weekend:

  • The Bethune Historic Site in Gravenhurst. Parks Canada's directions place the Bethune Visitor Centre at 297 John Street North, with free street parking. It is a calm place to stretch your legs.
  • Town-centre groceries and supplies. Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and Huntsville all have main streets with supermarkets, so a first shop is easy on arrival.

For events, the region's Discover Muskoka site keeps an events guide by month. We do not list dates here, because holiday weekend programming changes each year.

What does the Monday return look like?

The Monday is the harder half. Everyone who went up on Friday is driving south on Monday afternoon and evening, and Highway 400 southbound is the mirror image of the Friday problem.

A few ways to make the return more comfortable:

  • Go early on Monday. A late-morning departure still reaches Toronto before the afternoon line forms.
  • Go on Sunday evening. If you have work on Tuesday, leaving on Sunday gives you an unhurried night at home.
  • Go late on Monday. A pickup in the evening, after the peak, is possible, but it makes for a long day.

When you book the return, enter the lake address as the pickup and your Toronto home as the drop-off.

Who is the Muskoka run good for?

Families. A parent who drives for 1.5 hours or more on a holiday Friday, then unloads, then lights the stove, is tired before the weekend starts. Letting someone else drive is the simplest gain.

Guests who are not driving. Friends invited to the cottage often do not have a car in the city. A single pickup in Toronto is easier than three people finding their own way north.

Older relatives. A seated, door-to-door trip is kinder than a transit connection plus a drive. If a passenger needs a hand with steps or luggage, mention it at booking.

People who will not be driving home. Alcohol rules follow Ontario law and are confirmed at booking; we never promise drinks on board. If your weekend involves a celebration at the cottage, a chauffeur removes the question of who is driving back.

What is the weather like, and does it change the plan?

May in Muskoka can be pleasant or raw, and a cold wet weekend feels very different from a warm one. We do not publish weather statistics here, because the best data is the forecast for the day.

What matters for the drive is the road surface and visibility. Before you leave, check the forecast for Toronto, Barrie and your destination, and look at the 511 cameras and road-condition reports. Heavy rain slows Highway 400 more than most people expect, and fog near the lakes can slow the final approach.

If conditions are poor, the chauffeur may suggest a different departure time or a slower route. That is routine, and it is part of the reason to book a licensed, commercially insured driver for a trip that is mostly highway.

When is driving yourself, or taking the transit option, the better choice?

Honest answer: a private car is the right tool for a family with luggage, but it is not the right tool for everyone.

If you will need a car all weekend at the cottage, drive yourself. If you want to arrive without having driven, or you are a group travelling together, a chauffeured vehicle makes sense. On a holiday weekend a transit connection may use a holiday timetable. For example, in 2026 the TTC ran its Sunday schedules on Victoria Day, as set out on its holiday service page, and GO Transit ran a Saturday schedule according to its holiday schedules. That affects how you reach a coach terminal, not the cottage road itself.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to drive from Toronto to Muskoka on the Victoria Day weekend?

Gravenhurst is about 160 km from Toronto, which Parks Canada describes as an hour and a half by car. On the Friday of the long weekend you should expect the trip to take longer than that, and the booker shows the distance for your exact address.

Is Victoria Day a holiday in Ontario and Québec?

Yes in both. Victoria Day is one of the nine public holidays listed on ontario.ca for Ontario. In Québec the same Monday is National Patriots' Day, listed by the CNESST as a statutory holiday on the Monday that precedes 25 May.

What date is Victoria Day in 2027?

Monday 24 May 2027, so the long weekend runs Friday 21 to Monday 24 May. The holiday is always the Monday before 25 May.

Can the chauffeur drive all the way to my cottage?

The chauffeur takes the car as far as it can safely go. Highways and township roads are straightforward. A private lane, a gate or a boat-access property changes the plan, so tell us when you book and the chauffeur will confirm a meeting point.

How much is a limo or SUV from Toronto to Muskoka?

We do not publish fares on the site. The online booker shows the exact all-in fixed fare for your pickup and drop-off address and your vehicle before you confirm, so there is nothing to estimate in advance.

Which vehicle should I choose for a family cottage weekend?

A Luxury SUV carries up to 6 passengers with 5 to 6 large bags. An executive Sprinter handles 12 to 14 travellers and at least a dozen cases. An Executive Sedan carries up to 3 passengers with 2 large and 2 carry-on bags, which suits a light couple's trip.

Can I bring child seats?

Yes. We fit child, toddler and booster seats on request, so mention it when you book and state each child's age.

What is your cancellation policy?

More than 72 hours' notice: no charge. 72 hours or less: 10%. 48 hours or less: 50%. 24 hours or less, or a no-show: 100%. All are measured from the scheduled pickup time.

Will the chauffeur provide drinks for the trip?

We never promise drinks on board. Alcohol rules follow Ontario law and are confirmed at booking.
