Canada Day is the day when road closures decide everything about a car. In Ottawa the downtown core closes to traffic before breakfast and a large crowd moves on foot to the LeBreton Flats area; in Toronto the fireworks are spread across the city, and the crowd is spread with them. A car can work in both cities, but only with a plan that respects the closures. This guide is written from the curb, using what the City of Ottawa, the Government of Canada, the City of Toronto, the TTC and Harbourfront Centre have published.

Where are the Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa and Toronto?

In Ottawa the official plan centres on LeBreton Flats, with downtown streets closed from 6 a.m. on July 1 to 2 a.m. on July 2. In Toronto the City's main fireworks are at Ashbridges Bay Park at 10 p.m., with a separate harbour show at Harbourfront at 10:45 p.m. in 2026.

That is the pattern in recent years, and exact plans change annually. Canada Day is July 1, which fell on a Wednesday in 2026. It is one of Ontario's nine public holidays under the Employment Standards Act, so many people have the day off and most workplaces are closed. The Ontario government lists the full set on its public holidays page. We describe the most recent published plans below; confirm the current year closer to July 1.

Canada Day in Ottawa: what the official plan covers

The City of Ottawa's Canada Day page is a topic overview that names LeBreton Flats and Parliament Hill as the main celebration sites and covers fireworks, road closures, OC Transpo service and parking. See the City's Canada Day page for the current year. The Government of Canada's Canada Day page for 2026 describes the national noon ceremony and the performances, and links a broadcast replay.

The most detailed official planning document we could open was Canadian Heritage's 2024 media advisory, which describes a crowd management plan developed with the City of Ottawa, police services and OC Transpo, aimed at keeping people safe and moving around LeBreton Flats. It carries the caveat that all details may change, and the particular streets and times vary by year. We therefore describe it as a pattern, not a promise, and we link the sources so you can check the current notice.

Ottawa is 450 km from Toronto, about 4.5 to 5 hours by road, and the capital is the better place to be if you want a national ceremony and a large crowd. Toronto is the better place if you want a lake, several smaller fireworks and a calmer evening.

Ottawa road closures: Wellington, Sparks and the bridges

In the 2024 advisory, many downtown Ottawa streets closed from 6 a.m. on July 1 to 2 a.m. on July 2, including parts of Wellington, Sparks, Queen, Bank and Albert Streets. Some additional closures began at 7 p.m. on July 1, and others could be added for OC Transpo light rail queues. Several multi-use pathways closed from 4:30 p.m. on June 30 to 2 a.m. on July 2.

On the Gatineau side, some sections of Laval Street closed from 10 a.m. on June 30 to 10 p.m. on July 1. The Portage and Alexandra Bridges were closed to vehicles but open to pedestrians from 6 a.m. on July 1 to 2 a.m. on July 2, and Chaudière Crossing was closed to all traffic during that period. If your day involves moving between Ottawa and Gatineau, plan the vehicle portion before 6 a.m. or after 2 a.m., or cross by bridges that stay open and check the city notices on the morning.

The practical effect for a car: the downtown core is effectively closed for the entire day. A chauffeur cannot pick you up on Wellington Street at 3 p.m. on July 1. The pickup has to be outside the closure box, and you walk or take the free transit to the site.

Getting to LeBreton Flats: Lyon, Pimisi and free OC Transpo

The 2024 advisory said OC Transpo and the STO were free on July 1, and asked visitors to use Lyon Station for LeBreton Flats access, with Pimisi Station staying open for local access. The main LeBreton Flats entrance was at Wellington and Booth Streets. An extra para-shuttle ran to and from Tom Brown Arena, and a free supervised bike station was set up at the park. The City's transit page for Canada Day covers service hours, the Pimisi arrangements, shuttles from Park and Ride lots and plans for after the fireworks, but the details are year-specific, so read the current OC Transpo notice.

Our honest view: the O-Train is the best way to reach LeBreton Flats if you live near a Line 1 station. It is fast, it avoids the closed streets and the cost has been zero on the day. The queue after the fireworks is the price. The car is the better choice for people who cannot stand in a long line, who are travelling with a stroller or a grandparent, or who are coming from outside the O-Train network.

Ottawa limo service on July 1: pickup plans

For Canada Day we recommend you book the car weeks ahead and choose a meeting point outside the closed streets. Good candidates are a hotel or home address in a neighbourhood on the edge of the downtown closure box, or a spot near an O-Train station farther along the line, from which you take the free train in and meet the car afterwards. We confirm the exact curb with you after booking, based on that year's published closures.

The vehicle classes are the same as in the rest of our network. An Executive Sedan carries up to three passengers, a Luxury SUV up to six, and an Executive Sprinter twelve to fourteen with luggage space for chairs and coolers. Stretch limousines and mini-coaches are booked by the hour, and availability and the exact vehicle are confirmed at booking. Our vehicles and chauffeurs are licensed and commercially insured, and dispatch is 24/7. The booker shows the exact all-in fare for your address and vehicle before you pay.

Cancellation is measured from the scheduled pickup time: more than 72 hours' notice carries no charge; 72 hours or less is 10 percent; 48 hours or less is 50 percent; 24 hours or less or a no-show is 100 percent. See our Ottawa limo page for year-round service, the YOW airport guide for arrivals and the Ottawa station page for VIA Rail pickups.

Crossing from Gatineau on Canada Day

Gatineau has its own July 1 celebrations, and the Canadian Museum of History and Gatineau Park are close. The difficulty is the bridges. With the Portage and Alexandra Bridges closed to vehicles and Chaudière Crossing closed to all traffic in the 2024 plan, a car cannot cross between the cities in the middle of the day on its usual route. Plan the crossing early or late, or accept a pedestrian crossing and a second car on the far side. Our Gatineau limo page covers year-round service on the Quebec side.

Canada Day in Toronto: Ashbridges Bay, Harbourfront and Mel Lastman Square

Toronto's official fireworks are spread across several parks. The City of Toronto's release dated June 26, 2026 listed the flagship display at Ashbridges Bay Park, at 1561 Lake Shore Boulevard East, starting at 10 p.m. Other 10 p.m. displays were at Milliken Park, Amesbury Park, Stan Wadlow Park and Mel Lastman Square. Nathan Phillips Square had no fireworks. Several city museums offered free admission from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Riverdale Farm offered free admission. See the City's Canada Day announcement for the full list.

On the central waterfront, Harbourfront Centre held a fireworks show over the inner harbour at 10:45 p.m. in 2026, free and without tickets, visible from the waterfront including HTO Park to the west and Harbour Square Park to the east. Harbourfront noted that parking is limited and traffic delays are expected, and encouraged transit, walking or cycling.

Our guide to the CN Tower and Harbourfront afternoon covers the daytime on the waterfront, and the Toronto Islands ferry day is a good daytime alternative before an evening show.

Toronto fireworks night by car: where to be collected

With several fireworks sites, the question is not where the crowd is but where your car can reach. Our advice for Toronto on July 1:

Black stretch limousine parked on a sunny street
Black stretch limousine parked on a sunny street
  • Ashbridges Bay Park: the east-end crowd leaves all at once, and Lake Shore Boulevard East slows. A pickup on a residential street a few blocks inland avoids the worst of it.
  • Harbourfront: a waterfront show means the nearest streets are busy. Meet the car north of Queens Quay, for example near the Entertainment District or King Street, and walk to the water.
  • Mel Lastman Square: the TTC diverted the 97A/B buses onto Beecroft Road for the event in 2026, a sign of local street restrictions, so meet the chauffeur on a side street rather than Yonge Street.
  • Home or hotel pickups: the simplest answer. See our Toronto limo service page.

For groups and celebrations that stretch across the afternoon, an hourly chauffeur booking holds the car with you and lets you adjust timings.

The TTC on Canada Day

The TTC's July 1 notice for 2026 said all routes operated a Sunday service schedule starting around 6 a.m., and routes that do not normally run on Sundays did not run. For the Ashbridges Bay fireworks, subway service on Lines 1 and 2 increased and extra buses ran on the 22 Coxwell and 92 Woodbine South routes, with the 22 Coxwell extended to Woodbine Beach. The 509 Harbourfront streetcar had extra service for the Harbourfront show. Some bus routes were diverted for local celebrations, including the 13 Avenue Road, which ran only as far south as St. George Station during the Queen's Park celebrations. See the TTC's Canada Day notice for the full list.

If you live near the subway, the TTC is the sensible way to get to Ashbridges Bay and back. A car is the better choice when you want a door-to-door return after 10:30 p.m.

Toronto to Ottawa for the long weekend

Some families do both cities in one weekend. Ottawa is about 450 km from Toronto, roughly 4.5 to 5 hours by road, and the return on the evening of July 1 will coincide with the heaviest traffic of the long weekend. If you are travelling for the capital's celebrations, arriving on June 30 and staying the night is far calmer than driving up on the morning of July 1 into the closures. Our Toronto to Ottawa car service page covers the route, and the Ottawa to Montréal page covers the 200 km continuation, about 2 to 2.5 hours.

Flights and trains are alternatives: see our Pearson airport limo page for airport procedures. Pearson to Union Station is about 27 km, usually 30 to 50 minutes.

Families, heat and accessibility

Canada Day crowds stand in the sun for long periods, and early July heat is real. Bring water, shade and a plan for toilets. Child, toddler and booster seats are available on request at booking. For people with limited mobility, large events often have accessible arrangements, so check the City of Ottawa, the TTC and Harbourfront Centre pages for current provisions. The Canadian Heritage advisory noted an extra para-shuttle to Tom Brown Arena for LeBreton Flats in 2024. A chauffeur can position the car at the nearest practical point; tell us at booking what you need.

Alcohol rules in our vehicles follow Ontario or Québec law and are confirmed at booking; we never promise drinks on board.
