What is TIFF week, and why does a car plan matter?

TIFF is the Toronto International Film Festival, held each September around King Street West and John Street. Streets in the Entertainment District close for days, streetcars are diverted, and gala evenings bunch many arrivals into the same two blocks. A car plan means knowing which corner is open before you leave the hotel.

The festival lasts about ten days, but the transport problem is concentrated. Most of the disruption sits on King Street West between Spadina Avenue and University Avenue, with the heaviest pressure on opening weekend and gala evenings. The rest of Toronto runs normally.

This guide is written from the curb: where a chauffeured car can and cannot stop, how long the drive is from the airports, what the 2026 festival did to the streets, and when the subway or your own feet are the better choice. The 2026 festival has finished, so the closures described are what happened this year; next year's notices will differ in detail.

When does TIFF run, and why do the dates move?

The 2026 festival ran from 10 to 20 September. The 2025 edition ran earlier, 4 to 14 September, so the dates do not follow a rule you can count on. TIFF announces each year's schedule on its own site, tiff.net, and dates for the next edition were not published when this guide was written, so we give none.

What stays roughly constant is the shape: an opening weekend with the heaviest street activity, weekday screenings and industry meetings, gala premieres on several evenings, and a quieter final weekend. In 2026 the industry market, TIFF: The Market, ran 10 to 16 September, which brought business travellers into the same hotels and streets as the film audience. Book a car against the published TIFF calendar, not against the month alone.

Where are the TIFF venues, and which ones affect a car?

TIFF Lightbox at 350 King Street West, at John Street, is the festival's year-round home. It was the Bell Lightbox until Bell's sponsorship ended after 2023; give your driver the name TIFF Lightbox.

Royal Alexandra Theatre (260 King Street West) and Princess of Wales Theatre (300 King Street West) are about a block apart on King. Both are used for festival screenings and events.

Roy Thomson Hall is about a block east of the Royal Alexandra. Our guide to Roy Thomson Hall and the theatre district covers its ordinary show nights.

Scotiabank Theatre is the multiplex on Richmond Street West.

The practical point is that the main sites sit on or beside the same two blocks of King. A chauffeur needs one drop point that works for the cluster and is still open when you arrive.

How far is TIFF from Pearson, Billy Bishop and Union Station?

Distances are what dispatchers actually quote, so here they are. Times are typical off-peak ranges and stretch badly during a festival evening.

Toronto Pearson (YYZ)TIFF Lightbox areaabout 26 km30 to 50 minutes, longer in the evening peak
Billy Bishop (YTZ)TIFF Lightbox areaabout 4 km10 to 20 minutes
Union StationKing and Johnabout 1.5 km5 to 15 minutes by car, about 10 minutes on foot

For a Pearson arrival, our Pearson airport limo service tracks the flight, and the chauffeur is waiting in arrivals whether you land early or late. The trip downtown is the same route the Gardiner Expressway carries on any evening, with one difference: the last kilometre depends on which King Street blocks are open when you reach them.

What closes on King Street West during TIFF?

Opening weekend is the one to plan around. In 2026, the closures ran from early Thursday morning, 10 September, until early Monday morning, 14 September, across many downtown Entertainment District streets. Festival Street, the free open-air programme of screenings, food and music, took over King Street West for the opening weekend. Reports differed slightly on the exact blocks and hours, which is common for a closure that is adjusted as the festival begins, so treat any single published number with some caution.

The TTC reported its own changes for 2026. On the 504 King and 508 Lake Shore streetcar routes, the TTC warned of slower service in the King Street West theatre district on the red carpet evenings. The delay windows it published for 2026 were:

  • Wednesday 16 September: 5:30 to 6 pm, 7:30 to 9:30 pm and 11 to 11:59 pm.
  • Thursday 17 September: 7:30 to 8:30 pm and 11 to 11:59 pm.
  • Friday 18 and Saturday 19 September: 11 to 11:59 pm.

The pattern is useful beyond the specific dates. Late afternoon, mid-evening and the half hour after the screening ends are when King Street is busiest. The TTC publishes these on its TIFF service page, and the City of Toronto lists roadway restrictions on its road restrictions and closures page. Both are worth reading the week before you travel.

One more 2026 detail from the same TTC page: Line 1 had scheduled track work between St Clair and College on the final days, with service ending at 11:59 pm nightly from 14 to 18 September and shuttle buses replacing the subway over the last weekend. If your plan depends on the subway, check that page the day before.

Where can a car stop for a TIFF drop-off or pickup?

The honest answer is that it depends on the hour and on what is closed, and the festival changes it daily. What can be said is what Mirvish, the operator of the Royal Alexandra and the Princess of Wales, publishes: drop-off and pick-up signage on King Street West between Simcoe Street and John Street, both east and west of the Royal Alexandra's main entrance. That is the official place to look first.

For a festival evening, the chauffeur's job is to turn that into a plan:

  1. Choose the meeting point before you leave the hotel. For pickups, a side street one block off King is usually calmer than the theatre curb. Your chauffeur confirms the exact corner at booking and again by message when they are in position.
  2. Arrive from the east or west, not through the closed section. A driver coming from the Gardiner on the Spadina or York side can often reach a drop point north or south of the closure and let you walk the last stretch.
  3. Let the car leave. Dwell time on King is the problem, not the arrival. A quick, clean drop-off keeps the line moving and avoids a ticket.

If your party can walk two or three blocks to a pickup, the exit after a screening is much easier.

Can you park a vehicle near the TIFF theatres?

Parking is available but tight, and a chauffeur normally does not need it. The Princess of Wales Theatre has a parking garage beneath it, with four levels and an entrance ramp off John Street. The height limit is 6 feet 5¾ inches, about 1.97 metres, so a Sprinter van or a mini-coach will not fit. Hours are published by Mirvish and change, and the operator warns that demand can exceed capacity. The Royal Alexandra has no lot of its own; Mirvish points visitors to the City of Toronto's Green P search for municipal lots. Mirvish's getting here page lists all of this, and it is the right source for the current hours.

The simplest plan is to be dropped at the corner while the car waits nearby or returns at a set time, with no garage queue on the one evening you cannot be late.

How does a gala evening run, hour by hour?

A realistic evening for a guest with a premiere ticket. These are planning times, not published TIFF times, which change by film.

Chauffeur in a dark suit waiting at a doorway
Chauffeur in a dark suit waiting at a doorway
  1. Late afternoon: hotel pickup or airport arrival, with time to change.
  2. 90 minutes before the screening: depart. A festival evening can turn a 15-minute drive into a 35-minute one, and the last block is the slow part.
  3. 60 minutes before: reach the drop-off corner. Red carpet arrivals queue, so early beats exact.
  4. During the screening: the chauffeur waits at a nearby standing point or for the booked block; our hourly chauffeur service covers this pattern.
  5. After the film: message your driver when the credits roll, not when you reach the street. The pickup is usually one block from the venue.
  6. Late dinner or party: many are in the Entertainment District, Yorkville or the Distillery District.

For sponsor events, our event transportation service handles several vehicles with one dispatcher, and our corporate car service handles delegations with invoicing.

What about daytime screenings, press and business meetings?

Daytime TIFF is easier. The King Street West closures soften after opening weekend, and weekday screenings spread across the Lightbox, the theatres and the Scotiabank Theatre. A chauffeur booked by the hour suits back-to-back industry meetings, because the car stays within a few blocks. For the wider city, see limo service Toronto.

Which vehicle suits a TIFF party?

  • Executive Sedan (up to 3 passengers, 2 large and 2 carry-on bags): a solo guest or a couple.
  • Luxury SUV (up to 6 passengers, 5 to 6 large bags): a small delegation, or anyone with garment bags and gala wear.
  • Executive Sprinter (12 to 14 passengers, 12 or more bags): a production team or sponsor group.
  • Stretch limousine (8 to 10 passengers, hourly): a celebration around a premiere. Availability and the exact vehicle are confirmed at booking.

Large vehicles are harder to place on festival evenings because the drop-off zone is short, so a group may do better in two vehicles with one meeting point. See the fleet page. Alcohol rules follow Ontario law and are confirmed at booking; we do not promise drinks on board.

Can children, older guests and wheelchair users attend, and what about the weather?

Yes, with planning. The most useful thing for anyone who needs a short walk is a pickup that is as close to the venue as the street allows. The Royal Alexandra's main level is step-free with automated front doors, but it has no elevator, and reaching the Dress Circle or Balcony requires stairs, according to Mirvish. If you need step-free seating, confirm with the box office first. That is information the theatre publishes, and it applies during the festival as it does at any other time.

Child, toddler and booster seats are available when requested at booking. If you are travelling with a child to a family screening, mention the seat when you reserve so the car arrives set up. Our car seat service page explains how than the car.

What are the honest alternatives to a private car during TIFF?

For a single traveller going from a downtown hotel to a single screening, a car is often not the best choice. The table lists the real options.

OptionTimeCost noteBest for
Walk10 to 15 minutes from Union Station or most downtown hotelsFreeShort hops inside the Entertainment District
Subway to St AndrewOne stop from Union Station, then 5 to 10 minutes on footLowestSolo travellers and anyone comfortable with a short walk
504 King streetcarSlow, often diverted or delayed on red carpet eveningsLowestNot recommended for tight timing
Taxi or rideshareVariable, slower at premiere arrival timesMeter plus surgeSpontaneous short rides when you have time to wait
Airport transfer by private carPearson to King and John in about 30 to 50 minutesFixed fare quoted before you bookArrivals with luggage, groups and gala dress
Hourly chauffeurBooked blockFixed fare quoted before you bookBack-to-back meetings, multi-stop evenings

The straightforward verdict: if you are travelling light and your hotel is within a 15-minute walk, walk. If you are carrying formalwear, arriving from the airport, going to several venues in one night or travelling with a group, a pre-booked car removes the most uncertainty.

How do you book a TIFF car with TorontoBlackLimousine.net?

Booking is direct through our online booker. You enter the pickup address, the venue and the date, choose a vehicle class, and the booker shows the exact fare for your address before you confirm. There is no phone queue and no aggregator in the middle. For an airport pickup, your flight is tracked, so your driver adjusts to the real landing time. International arrivals include 60 minutes of free waiting after landing; domestic arrivals include 30.

Our Toronto dispatch runs 24 hours, which suits festival schedules that run late. The vehicles and chauffeurs are licensed and commercially insured. Cancellation is simple: more than 72 hours' notice carries no charge; 72 hours or less is 10%; 48 hours or less is 50%; and 24 hours or less, or a no-show, is 100%, measured from the scheduled pickup time.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Toronto International Film Festival?

TIFF is held in September. The 2026 festival ran from 10 to 20 September, and the 2025 festival ran from 4 to 14 September. Dates for the next edition are announced on tiff.net, and we do not state a date until the festival does.

How far is TIFF from Pearson Airport by car?

The TIFF Lightbox area at King and John is about 26 km from Pearson. The drive normally takes 30 to 50 minutes, and longer in the evening peak or when King Street is closed. The booker shows the exact fare for your address and vehicle before you confirm.

Is King Street West closed during TIFF?

Part of it is, mainly around opening weekend. In 2026 many Entertainment District streets closed from early Thursday 10 September until early Monday 14 September, and Festival Street took over King Street West. Streetcars were diverted. Exact blocks and hours change from year to year, so check the TTC and City of Toronto notices a few days before you travel.

Where does a car drop off at the Princess of Wales Theatre?

Mirvish publishes drop-off and pick-up signage on King Street West between Simcoe Street and John Street. During the festival your chauffeur confirms the exact corner with you, because closures and police direction can shift it. A side street one block off King is often the easiest pickup point after a screening.

Is there parking at the TIFF theatres?

The Princess of Wales Theatre has a garage under the theatre with a ramp off John Street. Its height limit is 6 feet 5¾ inches, so vans and mini-coaches cannot enter. The Royal Alexandra has no lot of its own. Check Mirvish for current garage hours.

Is the subway a good option during TIFF?

Often, yes. St Andrew station is one stop north of Union Station on Line 1, a short walk from the theatres. In 2026 the TTC also scheduled Line 1 track work late in the festival, so confirm service the day before. A car is better with luggage, formal wear or a group.

Can I book a car for a TIFF premiere with a child seat?

Yes. Child, toddler and booster seats are available when requested at booking, so mention the age and weight of the child when you reserve. The Royal Alexandra's upper seating levels are reached by stairs only, so confirm accessible seating with the box office as well.

What is the cancellation policy for a festival booking?

More than 72 hours' notice carries no charge. Counted from the booked pickup, the fee is 10% from 72 hours out, 50% from 48 hours out, and the full fare from 24 hours out or for a no-show.
