Is the August long weekend a statutory holiday in Ontario?

No. The Civic Holiday, observed on the first Monday in August, is not one of Ontario's nine public holidays. Some employers give the day off, but the Employment Standards Act does not require it. Québec's statutory list omits it too. In 2027 the weekend runs from Saturday 31 July to Monday 2 August.

That gap between "everyone seems to have the day off" and "the law does not say so" explains much of the traffic. Because the Civic Holiday is observed by many employers and municipalities but is not universal, the weekend has a particular shape. Some people leave on Thursday night, some on Friday afternoon, and some stay at work until the weekend and travel on Saturday morning, all heading to the same few places at once.

This post is the August companion to our spring guide to the Victoria Day cottage run. It compares three destinations that dominate the weekend, covers how the roads behave, and says plainly when you are better off driving yourself or taking a train. When you know the plan, you can get an instant fare from the booker for your exact pickup and drop-off addresses. The fare shows before you confirm, and it is fixed.

Which Monday is it, and what runs on it?

The Civic Holiday is the first Monday in August. The Government of Ontario's public holidays guide lists the nine statutory holidays and notes that some employers give a holiday on that Monday but are not required to. The Québec workplace agency's list of statutory holidays does not mention it.

For planning:

  • 2026: Monday 3 August, with the weekend from Saturday 1 August.
  • 2027: Monday 2 August, with the weekend from Saturday 31 July.

Public transit treats the day as a holiday even though the law does not. In 2026 the TTC ran holiday service on 3 August, which meant bus and streetcar routes followed Sunday schedules but started earlier, at about 6 a.m., per its holiday service page. GO Transit ran a Saturday schedule that day, according to its holiday schedules. Routes that skip weekends may not run, so check the line you need.

How do Muskoka, Blue Mountain and Niagara compare?

Each of the three destinations has a different road, a different crowd and a different kind of day. This is the short comparison, drawn from the distances and times the destinations publish themselves.

DestinationDistance and time from TorontoThe roadThe weekend character
Gravenhurst, MuskokaAbout 160 km; about an hour and a half per Parks CanadaHighway 400 to Barrie, then Highway 11 northCottages, lakes, small-town main streets
Blue Mountain, CollingwoodThe resort lists about 90 minutesHighway 400 north, then west toward Georgian BayVillage, trails, beach, patios
Niagara Falls125 km from Pearson, about 1.5 hours; downtown Toronto is a similar driveThe QEWFalls, boat rides, Clifton Hill, wine country

The distance to Gravenhurst is the sum of roughly 80 km to Barrie and another 80 km north, as set out on the Parks Canada directions page. The Blue Mountain figure is the resort's own estimate on its getting here page. The Niagara figures come from Niagara Falls Tourism, which also warns that travel time can double during peak periods such as rush hour or weekends. The August long weekend is exactly that.

What is the Muskoka run like on the long weekend?

For cottagers, the August weekend is the high point of the season. The route is the same as in May: Highway 400 north to Barrie, then Highway 11 north toward Orillia. After the Duckworth exit, Discover Muskoka says to keep left for Highway 11, then leave at the road for your town: Highway 169 west for Gravenhurst, Highway 118 west for Bracebridge, Highway 60 east for Huntsville and Algonquin Park, or Highway 117 east for Baysville and Dorset.

The difference in August is the number of people on the road, not the road itself. Visitors are heading to rentals, to resorts, to family cottages and to day trips on the lakes. The region's own site lists boat cruises, hiking, cycling, golf and waterfalls among its summer activities, so many travellers are not going to a cottage at all.

Before you go, check Ontario's 511 traveller information page for cameras, road conditions and construction. Ours is a Toronto dispatch, and the same live view informs when we suggest a pickup time. If your trip is to a lakeshore property, give us the full address, any lane name and any gate instructions. The details are on our Toronto to Muskoka route page.

What about Blue Mountain and Collingwood in summer?

Blue Mountain is known for skiing, but in August it becomes a village destination with patios, trails and visitors by the thousand. It is also a case study in why a weekend car plan helps. The resort's getting-here page lists Toronto at about 90 minutes and, as of 2026, notes that resort shuttles were not operating. It lists a FlixBus service from Toronto Pearson or the Union Station Bus Terminal as an alternative.

Parking is the other point. As of 2026 the resort lists day-guest lots P1 to P6, subject to availability, and describes one of them as paid. You are better off knowing that before you arrive on a long weekend. Your chauffeur confirms the exact drop-off spot with you, so nobody has to circle a lot looking for a space.

If the plan is a ski-season weekend rather than a summer one, our Blue Mountain ski season guide covers the winter version, and the Toronto to Blue Mountain route page covers the road in general.

What should you expect at Niagara Falls on a holiday Monday?

Niagara is a day-trip destination, and for most people the problem is parking and crowds, not driving. The Niagara Parks getting-around page describes Falls Parking (Lot A) at 6635 Niagara Parkway as the main lot, across from the Canadian Horseshoe Falls and Table Rock Centre. It also describes a seasonal park-and-ride lot, Rapidsview (Lot C), about a 7 to 8 minute ride on the WEGO Green Line to Table Rock Centre. Daily passes are sold online. No Niagara Parks lot allows overnight parking.

Dome-car windows on a train through a forest

That is useful detail for the long weekend. With a booked car, you do not need to find a space yourself. Your chauffeur confirms the drop-off and pickup spot with you. The WEGO hop-on, hop-off bus is the park's own shuttle, and it connects the Falls with the wider city.

For attraction order and the boat season, see our guide to Niagara Falls attractions in order. The Niagara Falls limo page covers the city, and the Toronto to Niagara Falls route covers the QEW.

Is the Niagara Parkway worth adding?

For many visitors the Falls are the headline, and the drive along the Niagara Parkway is the best second half of the day. Niagara Parks describes the Niagara Parkway as a 56-kilometre route from Fort Erie through Niagara Falls to Niagara-on-the-Lake, with parkland along the way. Major lots along the parkway are gated or metered, and a few small ones are free.

A relaxed day might run: the Falls in the morning, the parkway at midday, and Niagara-on-the-Lake in the afternoon. Our guide to the Niagara Parkway scenic drive walks through the stops. The Niagara-on-the-Lake limo page covers the town itself.

If wineries are on the list, remember the law. Alcohol rules follow Ontario law and are confirmed at booking, and we never promise drinks on board. A driver means nobody in your group needs to decide who takes the wheel after a tasting. For planning wine days, see our wine tour limo service page.

When should you leave, and when should you come back?

The weekend has three pinch points, and they are the same each year.

Toronto skyline and the CN Tower across the harbour
Toronto skyline and the CN Tower across the harbour
  1. Friday afternoon and early evening. Anyone with Monday off leaves after lunch. Highway 400 north of Barrie and the QEW toward Niagara both fill.
  2. Saturday late morning. Day-trippers and people who worked on Friday leave together, which makes a second wave.
  3. Monday afternoon and evening. Everyone returns. Highway 400 southbound and the QEW toward Toronto are the slowest of the weekend.

Our advice, in order of preference:

  • Leave Thursday evening or early on Friday if you can.
  • If you are leaving on Saturday, go at dawn, not at ten.
  • Come home on Sunday evening, or on Monday after the evening peak, not at three in the afternoon.

A chauffeured trip does not avoid the traffic, but it changes your experience of it. You can work, nap, read or talk instead of watching the brake lights. For a family, that is a large difference.

Which vehicle fits the group?

The right class depends on the headcount and the bags. A cottage weekend includes coolers, bedding and food. A day at the Falls includes a stroller, a bag and a rain jacket.

VehiclePassengersLuggageSuits
Executive SedanUp to 32 large and 2 carry-on bagsA couple heading to a Niagara day or a short stay
Luxury SUVUp to 65 to 6 large bagsA family going to Muskoka or Blue Mountain with gear
Executive Sprinter12 to 1412 or more bagsTwo or three families together, or a group sharing a rental
Stretch Limousine8 to 10, booked hourlyConfirmed at bookingA celebration day around Niagara, not a long cottage run

Stretch limousines, party buses and coaches are booked by the hour, and availability and the exact vehicle are confirmed at booking. For a group of friends renting a house, a Sprinter van with a chauffeur is usually the best match. Our fleet page shows every class.

What about heat, children and long days?

August days are long, and the trips are too. A few practical notes apply regardless of the destination.

  • Water and shade. Pack more water than you think you need, and keep a hat in the car. The Falls, the village at Blue Mountain and a cottage dock are all exposed in the afternoon.
  • Child seats. Child, toddler and booster seats are available when requested at booking. Tell us the age of each child.
  • Breaks. For a family with young children, the trip to Niagara or Blue Mountain is long enough for at least one break. Say so when you book, and the chauffeur will plan it.
  • Cancellation. More than 72 hours' notice: no charge. 72 hours or less: 10%. 48 hours or less: 50%. 24 hours or less, or a no-show: 100%, measured from the scheduled pickup time. Holiday plans change with weather and illness, so it is worth knowing.

If you are staying in Toronto instead, the Toronto-based events that tend to fall in the same season are covered in our Toronto Caribbean Carnival grand parade guide and the CNE family trip guide. Exact dates for both change each year, so check the official sites.

When is transit or driving yourself the better choice?

A chauffeured car is not always the right answer on a long weekend.

OptionTimeCost noteWho it suits
GO Train to Niagara FallsYear-round service per GO, with weekend trips; check the holiday timetableLowest, with combination tickets for WEGODay-trippers who do not need luggage space
Drive yourselfSame road as a car service; expect longer than the published times on the Friday and MondayFuel, parking and your own carPeople who want flexibility at the destination
Chauffeured SUV or SprinterSame road; you are a passengerFixed fare via bookerFamilies, groups, anyone who wants to arrive rested
Coach or FlixBusLonger, with transfersLowest for one travellerSolo visitors without luggage
RideshareSame road, but a long one-way trip is hard to arrangeMeter plus surgeShort local hops once you arrive

GO Transit's Niagara page states that it has service to Niagara Falls all year, and it offers a combination ticket with the WEGO bus. If you are two people travelling light to the Falls, that may well be the better value. If you are six with a cooler, it is not.

Frequently asked questions

What date is the Civic Holiday in 2027?

Monday 2 August 2027. It is always the first Monday in August, so the long weekend begins on Saturday 31 July.

Is the Civic Holiday a statutory holiday in Ontario?

No. The Government of Ontario's public holidays guide lists nine public holidays and notes that some employers give the first Monday in August, but are not required to. The Québec statutory holiday list does not include it either.

How long does it take to drive from Toronto to Muskoka on the August long weekend?

Gravenhurst is about 160 km from Toronto, around an hour and a half on a clear road according to Parks Canada. On the Friday and the Monday you should expect longer, and the booker shows the distance for your exact address.

How far is Niagara Falls from Pearson airport?

Niagara Falls Tourism says Pearson is 125 km from Niagara Falls, about a 1.5-hour drive. It also notes travel time can double during peak periods like rush hour or weekends. A holiday Monday qualifies.

Is there a shuttle to Blue Mountain?

As of 2026 the resort's page says there were no resort shuttles operating, and it lists a FlixBus service from Pearson and Union Station Bus Terminal. Check the resort's page before you travel, because services change.

How much is a limo from Toronto to Niagara Falls or Muskoka?

We do not publish fares on the site. The online booker shows the exact fixed fare for your pickup and drop-off address and your vehicle class before you confirm.

Can a chauffeur wait while we spend the day at the Falls?

Hourly and multi-stop bookings are available, and the chauffeur confirms the plan with you. Because Niagara Parks lots get busy on holidays, many groups prefer to be dropped off and collected.

Do you serve Québec on the same weekend?

We serve Toronto, the rest of Ontario and Québec. The Civic Holiday is not on Québec's statutory holiday list, so the Monday is an ordinary working day there.
