What is the CNE in its final weeks, and how do families get in and out?
The Canadian National Exhibition, or CNE, fills Exhibition Place each late summer and finishes on Labour Day. The grounds sit north of Lake Shore Boulevard West between Strachan and Dufferin, with gates at the west and east ends. Families reach it by GO to Exhibition Station, by the 509 or 511 streetcar, or by a car dropped off at a gate.
The last two weeks are the busy ones. Schools are close to starting, the weather has usually settled into summer heat, and families who have been putting the trip off finally go. Weekends and the last days before Labour Day are the heaviest, and the evenings stretch long because the Midway runs well after the buildings close.
This guide is written from the curb. It sets out where a chauffeured car can sensibly stop, how long the drive is from downtown and the airports, what the CNE itself publishes about getting in and out, and the cases where GO or the streetcar is simply the better choice. It is useful to a family that never books a car.
The CNE posts its facts year by year. The 2026 CNE has closed, and the details below are the ones published for 2026, labelled as such. 2027 specifics were not yet posted when this guide was written.
When is the CNE, and what changes in the final weeks?
The 2026 CNE is over. The CNE's own site lists the next exhibition for 20 August to 6 September 2027, which means it again ends on Labour Day. Those are the organiser's listed dates, and any change will appear on theex.com.

The shape of the final weeks is predictable even when the details are not:
- Weekends are the busiest. Families arrive in the morning and leave in the early evening.
- The last weekend and Labour Day have a clear end. In 2026, the buildings were open from 10 am to 10 pm, but on Labour Day they closed at 7 pm, and the Midway ran from 10 am to 9 pm instead of until midnight. Re-entry was not allowed after 3 pm on Labour Day.
- Weekdays are quieter, though summer-camp outings fill some days.
Opening hours for 2026, as the CNE published them: buildings 10 am to 10 pm; the Midway 11 am to midnight on weekdays and 10 am to midnight on weekends. If you plan a car around the end of the day, plan around the later of those times, because that is when the leaving crowd arrives at the gates and the loops together.
How far is the CNE from Union Station, Billy Bishop and Pearson?
These are typical off-peak road distances and times. Add time on a busy weekend, when the Gardiner Expressway slows toward the exits.
| From | To Exhibition Place | Distance | Typical drive time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Union Station | CNE gates | about 5 km | 10 to 25 minutes |
| Billy Bishop (YTZ) | CNE gates | about 5 km | 10 to 20 minutes |
| Toronto Pearson (YYZ) | CNE gates | about 25 km | 25 to 45 minutes |
Relatives arriving by air are a common CNE case. Our Pearson airport limo service tracks the flight, and international arrivals include 60 minutes of free waiting after landing; domestic arrivals include 30. The Billy Bishop option is on our airport page.
The booker shows the exact fare for your address and vehicle before you confirm.
Which gate should you use, and where can a car drop off?
The CNE grounds have two main gates, and they are at opposite ends:

- Dufferin Gate is at the west end of the grounds, at Dufferin Street. It is where TTC buses and streetcars arrive, and it has bike parking.
- Princes' Gates are the historic gates at the east end, at Strachan Avenue, with bike parking and a wagon-rental booth.
There is also a GO and TTC gate, because Exhibition GO Station is on the grounds. The CNE publishes no rideshare or taxi drop-off zone on its getting-here page, and we do not invent one. Your chauffeur confirms the exact curb with you at booking and by message on the day.
In practice, a car plan has three rules:
- Pick the gate for your day, not for the car. If you plan to start at Kids' World or the Princess Margaret Fountain, say so; the chauffeur picks the nearest practical approach. The east end is nearer the Princes' Gates, the lockers and the wagon booth.
- Approach from the Gardiner. The CNE says the grounds are reached directly from the Gardiner Expressway, and a car coming from downtown or the airport usually arrives that way.
- Choose a different pickup corner. Everyone leaves at the same gate at the same time. A corner one or two blocks away, agreed in advance, removes most of the waiting.
Lake Shore Boulevard West runs along the south edge of the grounds, and the approaches can be slow at the start and end of the day. For the very different closure pattern at the August parade, see our Toronto Caribbean Carnival Grand Parade guide.
What does a good family day at the CNE look like, hour by hour?
A plan that works for most families with children. The timings are suggestions, not CNE schedules.
- 9:30 to 10 am: arrive before the gates are crowded. Buildings open at 10 am.
- 10 am to 1 pm: indoor exhibits and food halls while the grounds are cooler and the queues are shorter.
- 1 to 3 pm: a longer break. Heat peaks in the afternoon, and many families leave or rest then.
- 3 to 7 pm: the Midway and outdoor entertainment, when the lines build.
- From 7 pm: a decision point. Families with small children usually leave; older children and teenagers stay until closing.
- Pickup: message the driver 20 minutes before you reach the gate, not when you arrive. The corner you agreed at booking is where the car waits.
If your day changes, a chauffeur booked by the hour can wait or return. See our hourly chauffeur service for how that works.
Strollers, wagons, lockers and child seats: what should you know?
According to the CNE's 2026 FAQ:
- Strollers are not available for rent. Bring your own.
- Wagons can be rented at information booths at Princes' Gate, the GO and TTC Gate, and the Princess Margaret Fountain, from 10 am to 10 pm.
- Lockers were available for a toonie at Princes' Gates, Kids' World and the south end of the Adult Midway.
- Pets are not allowed. One service animal per guest is permitted.
- Re-entry is allowed on the same day if you ask for a hand stamp before leaving.
That last point matters for planning. A family that steps out at lunch can come back through the gate with a stamp, so you do not have to carry everything all day. Do not leave valuables in an unattended vehicle.
For the car ride itself, child, toddler and booster seats are available when requested at booking. Tell us the age and weight when you reserve, and the car arrives with the right seat in place. Our car seat page explains how requests work.
How do wheelchairs, scooters and older relatives manage the grounds?
The CNE rents wheelchairs and electric scooters in partnership with Scouts Canada, and reservations are recommended. In 2026, the CNE took reservations by phone during the exhibition dates; check the CNE accessibility page for the 2027 arrangements. The page links an accessibility guide, which is worth reading before you go. It does not describe a dedicated accessible drop-off point, so we do not describe one either.
What a car can do is shorten the hardest part of the trip: the walk from the kerb to the gate. Tell us at booking if anyone in the party has limited mobility, and the chauffeur plans the closest practical stop and a time that avoids the peak departures. A Luxury SUV carries up to 6 passengers and 5 to 6 large bags; mention any folded wheelchair or scooter at booking so the right vehicle is confirmed.
Can a group, camp or birthday party use a Sprinter or party bus?
Yes. A summer camp, a birthday group or a large extended family travels more easily in one vehicle than in five cars. An Executive Sprinter carries 12 to 14 passengers with 12 or more bags; a mini-coach or party bus carries 20 to 30 and is booked by the hour. Availability and the exact vehicle are confirmed at booking. For a party that wants a celebration around the visit, see party bus Toronto.

Alcohol rules follow Ontario law and are confirmed at booking; we do not promise drinks on board. Compare vehicles on the fleet page.
Exhibition Place also hosts the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair and the trade shows later in the year, with different crowds; see our guides to the Enercare Centre shows and the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.
What about heat, rain and the evening pickup?
Late August in Toronto is warm, and the grounds have a lot of asphalt. Pack water and sun protection, and plan a break in the afternoon. A cool car at a pre-agreed corner at the end of the day is a legitimate reason to book. If it rains, indoor buildings fill and the departures bunch, because everyone leaves at once.
The evening is the hard part. The buildings close at 10 pm in 2026, the Midway runs until midnight on weekends, and families, teenagers and visitors all leave through the same gates. If you want an easy exit, either leave before the closing peak or wait inside for it to pass. Agree a pickup window with the chauffeur at booking, and the car messages you when it is in position.
Is a car the best way to reach the CNE? The honest alternatives
For many visitors it is not. The CNE publishes a thorough set of transit options.

| Option | Time | Cost note | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| GO to Exhibition Station (Lakeshore West) | Short ride from Union Station, on the grounds | Lowest; the CNE listed weekend passes and free fares for children 12 and under in 2026 | Most solo visitors and families with school-age children |
| TTC 509 or 511 streetcar | 15 to 30 minutes from Union or Bathurst | Lowest | Visitors near Union Station |
| 504B King streetcar or 29 Dufferin bus | Varies | Lowest | West-end and Dufferin corridor riders |
| Bike | Varies | Free | Confident cyclists; bike parking at Dufferin, Saskatchewan and Princes' Gates |
| Drive and park | 10 to 25 minutes from downtown | Parking $40 to $50 across the grounds in 2026, as listed on theex.com | Families with a lot of gear who want their own car |
| Private car with chauffeur | 10 to 25 minutes from Union Station | Fixed fare quoted before you book | Grandparents, large families, airport arrivals, a timed return |
The verdict: GO is the better answer for many families, because the station is on the grounds and children 12 and under ride free, according to the CNE's 2026 page. Drive-and-park is a good choice if you want your own vehicle. A chauffeur is the right answer when you are carrying a lot, when someone cannot walk far, when you arrive from the airport, or when you want no parking decisions at the end of a long day. For GO and TTC details, see GO Transit and the TTC.
